Abstract

Abstract Large amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids undergo transformation processes in the rumen through microbial biohydrogenation to form fatty acids with higher saturation degree. The respective process explains the high content of saturated fatty acids in products of ruminants and the potential risk of consumers’ health by consuming such products. Various nutritional approaches have been attempted to modulate biohydrogenation process in order to obtain healthier fatty acid profile from consumers’ perspective. The present paper is aimed to review the influence of dietary tannin, a naturally produced plant secondary compound, on the pattern of polyunsaturated fatty acids biohydrogenation occurring in the rumen. The effect of tannin on some key fatty acids involved in biohydrogenation process is presented together with the underlying mechanisms, particularly from up-to-date research results. Accordingly, different form of tannin as well as different level of the application are also discussed. Key words: Tannin, biohydrogenation, fatty acid, ruminant

Abstract

Biochar and liquid smoke may be utilized as feed additives that potentially used as substitutes for antibiotics. These products are derived from the pyrolysis process that utilizes agricultural, plantation and wood residues. This paper aims to review research results regarding the use of biochar and liquid smoke as feed additives in both non-ruminants and ruminants. Information on the use of of biochar and liquid smoke in livestock are available such as the use of 0.5-1 g bamboo charcoal/ kg goat feed increased growth; addition of 0.2-0.6% corn cobs char to chicken feed showed significant increase in body weight; the addition of 0.6% biochar/ kg feed to local cattle feed increased body weight; the use of activated charcoal containing wood vinegar liquid can reduce cryptosporidiosis in goats and cattle. The opportunity to use agricultural and plantation residues as raw materials for generating biochar and liquid smoke is one of the breakthroughs in realizing the concept of sustainable and environmentally friendly of bioindustrial agriculture. The use of biochar and liquid smoke from agricultural and plantation residues is expected to increase livestock productivity.

Abstract

Antibiotics have an important role in increasing livestock productivity. The ban on the use of these products encourages efforts to find substitute products. Butyric acid is one of the organic acids and considered to be potential to replace the role of antibiotics. In principle, both antibiotics and butyric acids can create livestock conditions physiologically and metabolically well to achieve good productivity. Several mechanisms of butyric acid in increasing livestock productivity can provide explanation for the positive effects of this material. Characteristics of butyric acids such as corrosive, volatile and have unpleasant odor encourage the need for an appropriate application technology. In ovo feeding technology can be the right solution to eliminate the constraints of using butyric acid. This technology has also been widely studied and proven to increase livestock productivity through improved hatching parameters, performance of livestock, improvement of organs/digestive tract (intestine), repair of bones, muscles and meat, and enhancement of immunity.
