Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types, speech functions, and reasons for code-switching found in the YouTube video of Jakarta Uncensored entitled “Kuliah Diluar Lulusnya Gampang?”. The data was collected through the library research method. The data of this study was obtained by accessing the YouTube channel of Jakarta Uncensored. There are several theories applied in this study. The first theory is the types of code-switching proposed by Poplack (1995), the second theory is the speech functions of code-switching proposed by Appel and Musyken (1987), and the last theory is the reasons for code-switching proposed by Hoffman (1991). Based on the result of the analysis, there are three types of code-switching found in the video, namely tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. Out of six different speech functions, there were five speech functions of code-switching found in the video, they are referential, directive, expressive, phatic, and metalinguistic. The reasons behind the occurrence of code-switching in the video are mostly because the speakers feel more comfortable using one language rather than another. There is also an occasion when the speaker wants to be emphatic about something. Aside from those two reasons, there are also several interjections and the intention of clarifying something found in the video.

Abstract

This article is intended to analyze the controversy over sampradaya and the dynamics of Hindu institutions in general and ‘The Indonesia Administrative Council of Hindu Dharma’ Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI) in particular in Palangka Raya City. The existence of sampradaya, as a transnational organization, has triggered an internal contestation among the Hindu elites. Being a qualitative study, this current study applies the approach of cultural studies, and emphasizes the different ways of interpreting one phenomenon. The data were obtained from the informants purposively chosen; therefore, they are categorized as the primary data source. The secondary data were obtained from the online and offline books available in the library, documents, articles and research results. The data were analyzed interactively in which Milles and Huberman were referred to. The data analysis includes the data reduction, the data presentation, the conclusion withdrawal or the data verification and interpretation. The results and discussion show that the controversy and contestation more dominantly result from the impact of globalization indicated by the dialectic process of affecting each other between the particularity referring to the symbols of the Bali Hindu identity, as one of the Hindu identities in Indonesia which is obliged to be maintained, and the universality, as the Hindu identity referring to the Indian culture, whose followers have spread all over the world. Keywords: sampradaya, PHDI, elite, Bali Hindu

Abstract

Swearing is the primary notion in this study. There are two objectives of this study, which are to classify the types of swearing in the series and categorize their motive. Swearing, in all its forms, has historically been both revered and reviled. It can serve as a cathartic release of emotion, a vehicle for rebellion against societal norms, or a sharp tool for emphasis. The analysis was conducted based on the theories proposed by Pinker (2007) and Stapleton (2003). Battistela (2005) differentiated swearing into 5 categories; Dysphemistic, Abusive, Idiomatic, Emphatic, Cathartic. Stapleton (2003) formulated the motives of swearing into nine types: story-telling, emphasis, anger/tension release, habit, normality, intimacy, vulnerability, part of personality, a way to shock. The analyzed data taken from a TV series Peaky Blinders. The collected data is analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative method since it did not involve any numerical data. Through the analysis, the use of swearing in a speech is revealed that the background of the character contributes to the family characteristics, in which it can affect their verbal aptitude and attitude, whether they will be good or bad. The Shelby family mostly swear because of the need to release or express their anger caused by the problems that they are facing on a daily basis and it is almost impossible for them to not express their emotions and anger in a form of swearing.
