Abstract

Background. The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a new issue, known as the infodemic about COVID-19. Individual behaviors in preventing the transmission of COVID-19 are influenced by their level of health literacy. While students are expected to have good health literacy, data shows that a high proportion of students have a lower level of health literacy. Aim. The research aims to assess the effectiveness of participatory learning methods based on a website in improving health literacy among students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method. The research design is an experimental design, specifically a pretest-posttest control group with randomization design. The research sample was randomly selected from 6 universities in Solo Raya that had completed the eHEALS health literacy screening questionnaire. Each intervention and control group had 41 respondents, and data analysis was performed using T-Test Result. The intervention of participatory learning methods based on a website significantly improved students' health literacy during the COVID-19 pandemic (p=0.031). Similar educational efforts targeting a broader audience are needed to enhance health literacy and promote the implementation of health protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: Scoliosis is defined as the lateral curvature of the spine reaching an angle of 10 degrees or more on coronal radiographs when an individual is standing. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), around 3% of the global population is at risk of experiencing scoliosis, while in Indonesia, the prevalence of scoliosis ranges between 3% and 5%. Leg length discrepancy is a situation where the length of both lower extremities is unbalanced. Leg length discrepancy can lead to various issues in body posture, such as scoliosis. This study aims to investigate the relationship between scoliosis and leg length discrepancy in children aged 4-6 years. The degree of scoliosis was measured using a scoliometer, and leg length examination was conducted using a measuring tape. Methods: This study is a quantitative research with a cross-sectional research design. The sample size was 567, selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion, exclusion, and dropout criteria. Results: The results, obtained using the Nonparametric Correlation Test with the Spearman Rank Test, indicate the absence of a relationship between leg length discrepancy and scoliosis, with a p-value of 0.189 (p>0.05) and a correlation strength level of 0.055, meaning the correlation is very weak, and the direction of the relationship is positive or in the same direction. Conclusion: There is no relationship between leg length discrepancy and scoliosis in children aged 4-6 years.

Abstract

Background: Adolescent males generally demonstrate a lesser understanding of reproductive health compared to their female peers. Paternal involvement is crucial in addressing this disparity, as fathers are perceived as facilitators of more comfortable same-gender interactions. This research employed the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Health Belief Model to analyse fathers' roles in disseminating reproductive health information to male adolescents.Method: A qualitative study was conducted in Surakarta between January and April 2025. Seventeen fathers of male adolescents, aged 10–19 years, served as the primary informants. They were selected via purposive sampling based on specific inclusion criteria: being married and having prior exposure to reproductive health materials. The exclusion criterion was non-local employment without a daily commute. Source triangulation involved an additional 17 wives and 19 adolescents. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analysed using Colaizzi's method.Result : The majority of fathers educated their children on reproductive health, indicating positive attitudes and an understanding of its significance for adolescents. Wives significantly influenced fathers' perceptions and communication regarding this topic. Time constraints emerged as a key issue, with fathers expressing willingness to participate when their teenagers were available. It was found that the simultaneous availability of fathers and teenagers was necessary to foster closeness and effective communication.

Abstract

Adolescent-friendly Health Services (PKPR’s Nutrition service) are intended to eliminate adolescent malnutrition, including anemia. However, the effect of health program utilization on adolescent anemia has rarely been studied. This study intends to examine the prevalence of anemia, the relation of social and behavioral factors, and the use of PKPR’s nutrition service with the anemia status of adolescent girls in Surakarta. A school-based cross-sectional design was conducted at a senior high school in Surakarta. Samples were 275 female students in grades 10 and 11 who had experienced menstruation. Multiple regression analysis is deployed to model the factors associated with anemia. The prevalence of anemia in female students was 37.82%. The employment status of the father and mother is associated with the anemia status of adolescents. Other factors, such as parent education, family affluence scale, behavior factors, parent support, knowledge, attitude, perception, and self-efficacy, were not associated with anemia status. PKPR’s nutrition service utilization did not correlate with adolescents' anemia status. PKPR’s nutrition service has not yet had an impactful outcome in reducing the frequency of anemia. Further research is needed to evaluate its implementation and impact on adolescent health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Utilization of reproductive health service may improve adolescent health and prevent reproductive health problems in adulthood. However, the proportion of adolescents who uses the available services remains low. Many factors influenced the services use among adolescents. The relation of adolescents’ health literacy and reproductive health service use was not fully understood. This study intended to examine the relationship between health literacy and use of reproductive health counseling service among high school students in one school in Banyumas Regency, controlling other variables (knowledge, acceptability, age, and sex). Method:  A cross-sectional study was conducted in March-April 2021 in one high school (SMA Negeri 4 Purwokerto), Banyumas regency, Central Java Province. Samples were 170 students purposively chosen from the first and second grade who were willing to fill the self-administered online questionnaire. Data of health literacy were collected using eHEALS questionnaire. Other data were obtained using valid and reliable self-design questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression was deployed to analyze the relationship between variables. Results: Health literacy had a significant relationship with the use of reproductive health services among adolescents. The probability of the reproductive health counseling service was doubled if they had a good health literacy level among students who had high acceptability toward the service and were female with an OR value of 2.1 (95% CI 1.01-4.49). In conclusion, adolescent’s health literacy level is associated with the utilization of reproductive health services. Further research is needed to confirm the association between the variables in more extensive settings.

Abstract

Parents are the primary source of information for adolescents, but many parents lack an understanding of health materials. For knowledge to be increased, health media, one of which is audiovisual media, are desirable. This study aimed to develop audiovisual media on adolescents’ reproductive health. Media development utilized the analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) model. The respondents in this study were parents of adolescents aged 10–14 years, comprising 10 parents in the small group evaluation, 20 in the field evaluation, and 10 in the implementation stage. The effectiveness of the media was tested through pretests and posttests. Using a questionnaire tested for validity and reliability, the data were collected. The effectiveness of the media was analyzed using N-gain. The results revealed that the seven audiovisual media were suitable for use. At the implementation stage, the N-gain value was 0.55, indicating that the video effectively increased parents’ knowledge of reproductive health. Developing audiovisual media on reproductive health is effective for parents. To ensure parents truly grasp reproductive health information, health institutions should consider creating interactive audiovisual resources. This format would make the material more accessible and comprehensible.
