Abstract

In Kendal Regency, the prevalence of Diabetes mellitus reached 2.8% in 2021, higher than the average for Central Java province. An unhealthy lifestyle in coastal areas, including lack of physical activity and consumption of foods high in sugar, as well as exposure to air pollution, has the potential to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Previous studies have shown a relationship between environmental factors and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, but the results have varied. This study aims to explore the effect of residence in coastal areas and industrial areas on the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Kendal Regency. With a deeper understanding of these factors, it is hoped that methods can be obtained to prevent and overcome type 2 diabetes mellitus in the area. This study was to analyze the effect of proximity to the beach and industrial areas on the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Kendal Regency. This study used observational analytics with a cross-sectional research design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Univariate and bivariate analysis used the Chi-Square test. Significant results were obtained based on the Chi-Square test on the effect of residence in coastal areas and industrial areas on the occurrence of type 2 diabetes mellitus with a p-value of 0.000 ( p-value <0.05). This study shows the effect of proximity to the beach and industrial areas on the incidence of diabetes mellitus in Kendal Regency.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are diseases that are not transmitted from one individual to another, but these diseases develop slowly and have long episodes. One of the most common non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is hypertension. The number of adults aged 30-79 years experiencing hypertension is around 1.28 billion worldwide. The prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia is estimated at 34.1%, showing an increase from 2013 of 25.85%. The prevalence of hypertension in Central Java is the largest case of all non-communicable diseases, which is 76.5%. The prevalence of hypertension in Kendal Regency always increases every year. In 2019 it was around 9.74%, in 2020 it was around 18.21%, and in 2021 it was around 32.32. Objective: This study aims to analyze the effect of residential altitude characteristics and body mass index (BMI) on the incidence of hypertension. This study uses observational analytics with a cross-sectional research design. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling technique. Statistical analysis with univariate analysis using Chi-square and multivariate analysis using logistic regression. Based on the results of the regression model equation show that the probability value ( predicted ) is 0.408. This shows that the sample in this study who have a residence with a residential altitude of 650 meters above sea level ++ and have a BMI with the Overweight/obese category will be predicted to experience hypertension with a predicted value of 0.408. It was found that the characteristics of being left behind are more significant in influencing the incidence of hypertension compared to body mass index, although both are considered risk factors.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the demographic determinants and parental health behaviors associated with the completeness of immunization in children under five. Methodology: This study used a cross-sectional design, where data were collected at one point in time to analyze the relationship between independent variables and the completeness of booster immunization in children aged 24-60 months. Results: This study found that child gender had a significant effect on immunization completeness, with girls being more likely to receive complete booster immunization than boys. Meanwhile, birth order, maternal age at delivery, and delivery method did not show a significant association with immunization completeness, in contrast to the results of previous studies which mentioned that children with higher birth order tend to have lower immunization coverage. Applications/Originality/Value: This study has practical applications as input for policy makers and immunization program implementers to design more evidence-based and contextualized strategies, taking into account parental health behaviors as well as family demographic characteristics. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on the completeness of booster immunization in children aged 24-60 months, a group that has rarely been studied in Indonesia, as most previous studies have focused on basic immunization and children under 24 months. The importance of this study is also reflected in its emphasis on parental behavioral variables, such as exclusive breastfeeding and paternal smoking habits, which are less explored but have great potential to influence child immunization coverage.

Abstract

Purpose: Obesity is a growing public health problem in Indonesia, with prevalence influenced by several factors such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and sociodemographic factors such as urbanization and socioeconomic status. It is associated with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes and asthma, and is more common in urban and affluent areas compared to rural areas. Although traditional markets may increase access to healthier food options, their direct impact on reducing obesity remains unclear. This study aims to conduct a multifactorial and bivariate analysis of obesity risk factors by involving analysis of the influence of gender, age, and traditional markets. Methodology: This cross-sectional study analyzed data on Gatak Sub-district Health Center visits (May-July 2024) and the presence of traditional markets from Statistics Indonesia reports, using Pearson Chi-Square and logistic regression to test the impact of age, gender, and market availability on BMI. Results: This study analyzed 9,639 patients, with fewer than half under 50 years old, two-thirds female, and nearly 80% living in areas without traditional markets. Multivariate and bivariate analyses revealed a higher proportion of obesity among patients aged 50 and older and females (p = 0.000). However, the presence of traditional markets showed no significant impact on obesity rates. The presence of traditional markets does not have a significant influence in causing obesity. Age 50 years and above and female gender have a higher risk of obesity. Applications/Originality/Value: This research contributes to understanding the factors that influence BMI in rural areas in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the relationships between age, salt consumption, coastal proximity, and hypertension risk in populations along the northern coast of Central Java, Indonesia, addressing a significant gap in understanding environmental determinants of hypertension in coastal communities. Methodology: A cross-sectional study analyzed 4,699 patient records from the Integrated Health Post information system in Cepiring Subdistrict, Kendal Regency, Central Java during May-July 2024. Variables examined included age, blood pressure readings, self-reported salt consumption, and coastal proximity (measured as distance from village boundary to coastline). Bivariate analysis using Chi-Square tests and multivariate analysis using binary logistic regression were performed to identify associations and independent risk factors. Results: The study revealed significant associations between all examined factors and hypertension. Advanced age (≥50 years) increased hypertension risk (aOR 1.463; p<0.001). Living within 147 meters of the coastline unexpectedly demonstrated a protective effect (aOR 0.773; p=0.009). Excessive salt consumption showed the strongest association with hypertension (aOR 4.365; p<0.001), presenting a four-fold increased risk compared to moderate or low consumption. Applications/Originality/Value: This study provides novel insights into the paradoxical protective effect of coastal proximity on hypertension risk while confirming the significant impact of age and salt consumption. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions addressing dietary management and hypertension prevention, particularly among older populations. The unexpected protective role of coastal proximity warrants further investigation into potential environmental or lifestyle factors unique to coastal communities that might mitigate hypertension risk.
