Abstract

Agric finance is one of the important components in the development of coffee plant which is one of the main export commodities of Indonesia. This research aims to 1) identify the factors affecting credit access to formal sources of finance by the farmers, and 2) analyze the effects of credit on the farmer income. The study was conducted in the Arabica coffee production center at Aceh Tengah district. Data were collected from 73 farmers by the stratified random sampling. The data analysis was conducted using the probit model, and the results showed that the factors affecting farmers’ access to credit include age, dummy of creditor‘s visit and farmers' knowledge. Using simultaneous equation model (2SLS), the estimation results showed that credit has positively increased production and food consumption of organic Arabica coffee of the farmers. Correspondingly, the simulation results showed that the increase in production and  consumption of food will increase the productivity of the labor in the family, and this is the dominant input in organic Arabica coffee farming  that will increase the farmers' income. Keywords: organic Arabica coffee, credit, simultaneous (2SLS), farmers’ income, probit

Abstract

Agricultural cooperatives play an important role in supporting small agricultural farmers. The key roles of cooperatives are to improve access to markets, increase in bargaining position of farmers, and adopt improved technologies. The problem faced by the coffee farmers is their weakness position in the price determination. Based on this problem, this study aimed to analyze the cooperative’s business behavior. The study was conducted in Aceh Tengah and Bener Meriah districts. Data were collected from 15 cooperatives purposively selected. The mode of cooperative economic behavior was constructed as a simultaneous equation system consisting of purchase price, purchase amounts, sales prices and number of cooperative members. The model was estimated by 2SLS method. The results show that most of the variables in the model indicate that cooperatives have run their business in compliance with the cooperative principles.   Keywords: agricultural cooperative, coffee, farmers, simultaneous modelAbstrakKoperasi pertanian memiliki peran penting dalam mendukung petani kecil. Abstract

Global market provides opportunities for business owners to grow their business. However, to what extent farmers – as one of business owners – take benefits from the global markers remains unclear. This paper aims to investigate the impact of entrepreneurial orientation on farmers’ involvement in global supply chain, in turn on farm performance. The data were gathered from a survey of 320 samples of vegetable farmers in three regions in West Java, Indonesia. Using PLS analysis, our findings demonstrate that farmers with higher entrepreneurial orientation (reflected by dimensions of innovativeness, proactiveness, risk taking, competitive aggressiveness, and autonomy), involve more in global supply chain, and gain higher farm performance. Ultimately, the more farmers involve in global supply chain, the higher their farm performance. Our findings provide an empirical support for the impact of entrepreneurial orientation on enabling farmers’ ability to involve in broader supply chains beyond the domestic ones. As a consequence, farmers enjoy better farm performance.

Abstract

Rice marketing in Indonesia has undergone significant changes, especially at the retailer level. Rice provided by retailers is increasingly diverse, both in terms of variation and quality. This study is aimed at analyzing the implicit value of various characteristics that are generally used as a reference when consumers buy rice at retailers. The study employed a hedonic price model, which was originally introduced by Lancaster. The data used are primary data from the survey of various types of rice sold by retailers in various locations in urban area of Bogor. The survey was conducted in March 2018. The results showed that the content of rice fragments or minute kernels and off-color rice can discount the price of rice. The estimation results of the model also showed that the length characteristic had a negative influence on the price of rice. Rice producers and traders have the opportunity to increase the price of rice they sold by reducing contents of the minute kernel and off-color rice that can be visually observed by consumers when making the choice of rice to buy. Keywords: consumer preference, implicit price, quality attributes, retail market

Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the performance production and technical efficiency of oil palm production in Indonesia based on the management pattern (independent farmers and supported farmers). The secondary data were used from the Estate Cultivation Household Survey (ST2013 SKB) conducted by BPS-Statistics Indonesia. The empirical analysis involved using a meta-frontier approach, allowing one to decompose efficiency into group-level technical efficiency and technology gaps. The results indicate that the output of each management pattern behind their potential with the mean technical efficiency of 0,6789 and 0,7127 for independent farmers and supported farmers, respectively. The technology gap ratio statistics showed that the farmers had adopted the best available smallholder production technology in their farming. However, independent farmers were slightly more optimal than supported farmers. The efficiency measure generated from the meta-frontier revealed that supported farmers were more efficient, where the primary source of inefficiency came from managerial inefficiency. Thus, the policies to increase the production of oil palm smallholders must focus on the improvement of technical skills and managerial capabilities of farmers on the efficient use of resources and advanced technology by considering each characteristic of each management pattern. Abstract

Over the past 10 years, cassava imports in the form of semi-finished products have tended to increase. This study aims to analyze the comparative advantages and competitive advantages of fresh cassava at the farming and processed cassava level in the processing industry. The research used secondary data covering 2.595 cassava farmers in all provinces in Indonesia obtained from Agricultural Census 2013 - Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), while data on the cassava processing industry was obtained from the publication of Bank Indonesia. The Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) method was used to measure cassava's comparative and competitive advantages and further analyzed based on the technical efficiency score of the farm allegedly by the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. Results from PAM Analysis showed that Indonesian cassava products both in the farming and processing industry levels were not competitive. The technical efficiency of cassava production becomes the determinant of competitiveness the more efficient the production at the farm level, the competitiveness of cassava the higher. The competitiveness of the cassava processing industry is determined by the government's intervention in the price of cassava. The cassava processing industry pays for raw materials higher than it should. The implications of this study are to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian cassava products need to increase the efficiency of cassava farming production and government policies related to the selling price of fresh cassava to protect farmers and the cassava processing industry.
