Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the expression of the a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 17 (ADAM17) gene as a marker of Alzheimer's disease in long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). This study used six brain samples (hippocampus and cortex regions) of long-tailed macaques which was divided into two groups consisting of aged long-tailed macaques and adult long-tailed macaques. The expression of ADAM17 gene was determined by comparing the relative quantification values between the two age groups, and brain regions consisting of the hippocampus and cortex regions. The results of data analysis showed no significant difference in the expression of ADAM17 gene between brain regions and between age groups of long-tailed macaques. However, numerically the results showed a lower expression of ADAM17 gene in the hippocampus region of aged macaques. Lower expression of ADAM17 gene could be a marker of old animals indicating the stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of coccidiosis. Samples were obtained from 400 dairy cattle (196 calves aged 6 months, 37 calves aged 6-12 months, and 167 calves aged 12 months). Feces samples were collected, examined and counted for prevalence and number of oocyst per gram faeces (OPG) by McMaster technique. A questionnaire was design to record information about animal health and husbandry, individually. Risk factors associated with the prevalence of Eimeria in cattle were analyzed by logistic regression model. The overall prevalence and the average of OPG of Eimeria in cattle was 179 (44.75%) and 286.75, while highest prevalence of Eimeria was observed in calves aged less than 6 months. Cattle aged more than 12 months showed significantly different relationship (P0.05) to the prevalence of Eimeria infection compare to calves aged less than 6 months and aged 6-12 months. The presence of an immature immune system in younger calves resulting in their higher susceptibility to coccidiosis. Among management and animal health practices, floor type and treatment of cattle influence the prevalence of Eimeria in cattle.

Abstract

Coccidiosis is one of the most widespread parasitic diseases affecting cattle worldwide, caused by Eimeria spp. This study aimed to determine the composition of Eimeria species and the factors influencing Eimeria oocyst shedding in dairy farms. A cross-sectional study was conducted in dairy farms in South Bandung District from July 2014 to January 2015. Fecal samples were collected from 400 dairy cattle, consisting of 196 calves aged < 6 months, 37 cattle aged 6–12 months, and 167 cattle aged > 12 months. Samples were examined and quantified for Eimeria species composition and oocyst per gram (OPG) counts using the McMaster technique. A questionnaire was administered to dairy farmers to gather information on cattle health status and husbandry practices. The effects of sex, age, and pen flooring type on OPG values were analyzed using Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests, followed by Dunn’s multiple comparison test. Ten Eimeria species were identified in the infected cattle. Among them, Eimeria bovis showed the highest prevalence (42.5%), followed by Eimeria wyomingensis (39.1%), Eimeria bukidnonensis (32.4%), Eimeria pellita (26.3%), Eimeria auburnensis (19.6%), Eimeria zuernii (17.3%), Eimeria cylindrica (3.9%), Eimeria canadensis (3.9%), Eimeria brasiliensis (3.4%), and Eimeria alabamensis (1.1%). Oocyst shedding was significantly correlated (p < 0.05) with cattle sex, age, and pen flooring type, all of which influenced infection pressure. Younger calves aged < 6 months shed the highest numbers of Eimeria oocysts compared to older cattle. Several factors may contribute to the increased OPG in fecal samples; therefore, maintaining proper sanitation and implementing effective Eimeria control measures are essential for dairy cattle management in KPBS Pangalengan.

Abstract

Colistin is the last drug of choice for dealing with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae bacteria; hence, this drug is very crucial to human health. The discovery of a plasmid-mediated colistin-resistant gene, the mobilized colistin resistance-1 (mcr-1), signals a significant global health threat. Colistin sulfate is an antimicrobial agent which has been approved for use in broilers in Indonesia. Thus, this study aimed to measure the prevalence of colistin-resistant Escherichia coli and to detect the mcr-1 colistin-resistant gene in E. coli and E. coli O157:H7 in the entire supply chain of broilers in Bogor Regency, West Java Province, Indonesia. Samples were taken from 47 flocks that used colistin sulfate (47 pools of cloacal swabs, 47 pools of drinking water, and 47 pools of litter), seventy fresh meat samples and seven plucker swab samples from seven small-scale poultry slaughterhouses, seventy fresh meat samples from seven traditional markets, and seventy cooked meat samples from seven small restaurants. The isolation of E. coli was done on each of the 358 samples, and 493 isolates were obtained. All the E. coli isolates were then tested for their susceptibility to colistin sulfate by using the agar dilution method. The detection of the mcr-1 gene from the colistin-resistant isolates (minimum inhibitory concentration > 2 µg/mL) was conducted using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The prevalence value of colistin-resistant E. coli in all the isolates was 11.76% (CI 95%; CL 9.21–14.91), and the prevalence of the mcr-1 gene was 10.55% (CI 95%; CL 8.13–13.57%). A very good agreement correlation existed between the colistin-resistant phenotype and the mcr-1 gene (κ = 0.939). The mcr-1 gene was found in 89.66% of colistin-resistant E. coli isolates. Two colistin-resistant and mcr-1 carrying isolates were identified as E. coli O157:H7 serotype. This research was the first study attempt on the mcr-1 gene in Indonesia, covering the entire supply chain of broiler meat from farms to consumers. The results indicated the necessity to reduce the use of colistin sulfate in broiler management and to improve biosecurity measures, not only in farms but also in the entire supply chain of broiler meat production.

Abstract

Background: Live bird markets (LBMs) are critical nodes in the poultry supply chain but also high-risk environments for avian influenza (AI) transmission. Objectives: This study assessed biosecurity, sanitation, and environmental practices in LBMs in Bogor, Indonesia, and evaluated evidence of AI exposure in poultry through serological testing. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in nine LBMs using structured questionnaires and observations, alongside serological testing with the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay to detect antibodies against H5N1 clades 2.1.3 and 2.3.2.Results: Significant biosecurity gaps were identified, including reliance on motorcycles for poultry transport, mixing of birds from multiple sources and species, absence of wastewater treatment facilities, and frequent presence of stray animals. Serological testing detected antibodies in layer chickens (55.6% for both clades) and broilers (11.2% for clade 2.3.2), suggesting ongoing viral exposure potentially linked to vaccination and/or field circulation. Conclusions: The findings highlight LBMs as amplification points for AI, with implications for poultry health, human exposure, and environmental contamination. Strengthening biosecurity and market infrastructure, enforcing animal health certification, and implementing safe disposal of sick or dead birds are critical. Integrating these measures within a One Health framework is essential to reduce AI risks and enhance zoonotic disease preparedness in Indonesia.
