Abstract

Body odor is a problem caused by the activity of microorganisms, one of which is the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria by metabolizing sweat released by the body. The use of antiperspirant products is thought to reduce sweat production and bacterial decay . However, antiperspirants available in the market contain active chemicals that can cause irritation so it is necessary to use plant extracts as an alternative preparation of natural antiperspirant products. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of natural antiperspirant extracts of red shoot leaves (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.) in inhibiting the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria that cause body odor. The method used is descriptive quantitative with parameters of simplicia and extract yield tests, extract characteristics, phytochemical screening, antibacterial effectiveness of extracts, physical quality tests of antiperspirants, antiperspirant effectiveness and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results of the study showed that the red shoot leaf extract meets the general standards of medicinal plant extracts and contains secondary metabolite compounds that are able to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria with the formulated product producing suitable characteristics as an antiperspirant that is able to inhibit sweat production and the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria which is supported visually by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Based on the results obtained, it is known that the natural antiperspirant red shoot leaf extract (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.) has antibacterial effectiveness against Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Thus, the use of natural ingredients can be a solution to overcome the causes of body odor and reduce the use of conventional antiperspirant products that contain chemicals that are harmful to health.

Abstract

Preservation using glycerol as cryoprotectant agents is expected to be an alternative in maintaining bacterial viability, so that when they are to be used again, the bacteria can grow. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of glycerol concentrations of 10%, 30%, and 50% in the preservation medium and preservation time on the viability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa FNCC 0063 during storage, as well as to determine the effective glycerol concentration and time. Preservation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa FNCC 0063 in the form of bacterial suspensions and pellets was conducted for 30–150 days at a freezer temperature of –40°C. Viability tests were performed from day 30 to 150 using the Plate Count method with Nutrient Agar medium. Two-way ANOVA test of pellet preservation from cell viability data,  significant value 0.000 < 0.05, meaning that viability or the number of living cells is influenced by time and glycerol concentration. Preservation time and glycerol concentration based on the Tukey test results showed the highest average value on day 60 and a concentration of 50%, which was 9.4 x 10⁵ CFU/ml. Suspension preservation: the two-way ANOVA test results showed that preservation time had an effect, but glycerol concentration did not significantly affect cell viability. Tukey test showed that the preservation results on day 120 were significantly different from those at 30–90 days. As for concentration treatment, there were no significant differences between 10%, 30%, and 50%, but the 50% concentration had relatively stable and high viability compared to 10% and 30%, at 6.7 × 10⁵ CFU/ml.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Striae gravidarum is the stretching of the skin beyond its elastic limit that causes blue or reddish lines to appear on the abdomen, thighs, and breasts of pregnant women. Striae gravidarum can cause itching, burning, and dryness, as well as emotional disturbances that cause discomfort in most pregnant women. The prevalence of Striae gravidarum in pregnant women worldwide ranges from 50% to 90% but specific data on Striae gravidarum is not recorded because Striae gravidarum is a complaint or discomfort during pregnancy that is sometimes ignored by pregnant women themselves. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is coconut oil that contains ingredients that effectively maintain skin elasticity. This study is a development of research that has been conducted previously by researchers related to Striae gravidarum and Virgin Coconut Oil. Aims: The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative study regarding the more significant effectiveness of using Virgin Coconut Oil and Olive Oil on the degree of Striae gravidarum. Methods: This research uses quasi experiment. with Pretest Posttest Control Group Design. The population of this study were all pregnant women in Errabu Village, Bluto District, Sumenep Regency. The sample is Trimester II pregnant women in Errabu Village using purposive sampling method. Data analysis will use a significance level of <0.5 then compare whether VCO or Olive Oil has the most significant effect in reducing the degree of Striae Gravidarum. Results: The results of the analysis show that the p-value of 0.04 < α (0.05) so that H1 is accepted, H0 is rejected, which means there is a difference in the effectiveness of using Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) and Olive Oil on reducing the degree of Striae Gravidarum in pregnant women, although both oils are equally effective in reducing the degree of striae gravidarum. Conclusion: VCO is more effective than olive oil in reducing the degree of striae gravidarum in second trimester pregnant women in Errabu Village, Sumenep District. Abstract
