Abstract

This study aims to identify specific problems and provide insight into learners' difficulties in the inflectional markings learning and academic writing. The method of this research is Dulay’s Linguistics Category Taxonomy. The result of classification was calculated by the frequency of each error category: plural marks 13, present verb for third person singular 11, past verb 3, possessive noun 2, and past participle 1. Plural marks dominate the error of using the inflectional markings. The comparison and progressive marks are not found errors in EFL Students’ Academic Writing.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceptions of students at SMAN 5 Palu regarding the impact of using song lyrics to improve English reading comprehension. This study focuses on the role of song lyrics in increasing reading motivation and the challenges faced by students in their use. Although reading comprehension is an essential skill, international assessment results such as PISA show that Indonesian students' reading literacy is still below the global average, causing students to often feel bored and have difficulty understanding conventional texts. This study used a descriptive qualitative design with 25 students from class X Merdeka 1 of SMAN 5 Palu selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through open questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results showed that students had positive perceptions of the use of song lyrics. Song lyrics increase learning motivation through a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and help improve vocabulary, contextual meaning comprehension, and grasping main ideas. Challenges found include the use of slang, figurative meanings, fast pronunciation, and distractions for some students. This study concludes that song lyrics are effective authentic material in EFL reading learning.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of folktales in enhancing English language skills among junior high school students within an EFL context. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through interviews with one English teacher and five ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 12 Palu, as well as document analysis of an English textbook. The findings reveal that folktales contribute to the development of language skills by increasing student motivation, reducing anxiety, and providing meaningful language input. Folktales were also found to be strategically integrated into textbook activities aligned with curriculum objectives. It is concluded that folktales represent an effective, culturally responsive medium for fostering English language learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) in improving descriptive writing skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Palu. A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 52 students selected through purposive sampling and divided into an experimental group and a control group. Both groups were given pre-tests and post-tests to measure their writing performance. The results show that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 60.54 to 75.88, while the control group also improved from 62.12 to 72.04. The independent-samples t-test showed no significant difference in pre-test scores between the two groups, indicating that both groups had similar initial writing ability. Although both groups showed improvement after the learning process, the experimental group showed a greater increase in mean score than the control group. The findings suggest that Inquiry-Based Learning contributed positively to students’ development of descriptive writing.

Abstract

The primary objectives of this study were (1) to identify the types of errors made by third-semester students in the use of noun phrases and (2) to determine the most frequently occurring error type. To achieve these objectives, a descriptive qualitative research design was employed. Data were collected using two types of assessments: multiple-choice questions and essay writing tasks. These instruments were designed to elicit various forms of noun phrase usage to allow for a comprehensive analysis of student performance. Based on the data analysis, four main types of grammatical errors were identified (1) omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Among these, misformation errors were found to be the most prevalent. This suggests that while students may understand the general structure of noun phrases, they struggle with selecting the correct grammatical forms, such as appropriate determiners, pluralization, or adjective-noun order. The high frequency of misformation errors may stem from several interrelated factors, including interference from the students' first language, insufficient grammatical instruction, and limited exposure to authentic English usage

Abstract

Grammar mastery, particularly in the use of past forms, is essential for developing students’ writing skills. However, many students still experience difficulties in applying regular and irregular verbs correctly. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of group work in improving students’ mastery of past forms. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving an experimental class and a control class, each consisting of 23 tenth-grade students of SMAN 5 Palu. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests consisting of multiple-choice and essay questions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Levene’s Test of Homogeneity, and the Mann–Whitney U Test with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics version 29. The pre-test results showed that both groups had relatively similar initial abilities, with mean scores of 78.91 for the experimental class and 80.21 for the control class. After six meetings of treatment using group work activities, the experimental class achieved a higher post-test mean score (87.39) than the control class (81.19). The Mann–Whitney U Test showed a significance value of 0.000 (Asymp. Sig. 2-tailed 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These findings reveal that students taught through group work performed better in understanding and using regular and irregular verbs. Therefore, group work is effective in improving tenth-grade students’ mastery of past forms in writing at SMAN 5 Palu

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the use of visual comic strips is effective to improve the descriptive text writing skills of seventh grade students at SMPN Model Terpadu Madani Palu. The researcher used quasi-experimental research design. The sample consisted of two classes: the experimental group (n = 22), which was taught using Comic Strips, and the control group (n = 22), which received conventional writing instructions methods. An analytical scoring rubric was used to evaluate students' writing abilities. It focused on three areas: mechanics (5 points), organization (35 points), and content (20 points), for a total of 60 points that were converted to a 100-point scale. According to the descriptive statistics, the experimental group improved significantly, with the mean score rising from 41.82 in the pre-test to 85.00 in the post-test, whereas the control group changed very little, from 32.27 to 73.41. A significant difference between the groups was established by the Independent Sample t-test, with an Asymp. Sig. value of 0.001 < 0.05. These results show that comic strips facilitate collaborative work revision and better concept organization for students. Therefore, Comic Strips is effective to improve descriptive writing skills of seventh grade students at SMPN Model Terpadu Madani Palu.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the students' limited vocabulary mastery in learning English. Therefore, the researcher applied interactive games as an instructional tool to support students in expanding their vocabulary. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of interactive games in improving the vocabulary achievement of eighth-grade learners at MTs Alkhairaat Alindau. The study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The participants consisted of 24 students from Class VIII A. The data, collected through pre-tests and post-tests, were examined using a normality test and a paired sample t-test in SPSS software. Findings show that the students' mean score increased significantly from 45.67 in the pre-test to 66.58 in the post-test. The statistical analysis yielded a t-value of -15.668 (with a very large effect size, Cohen's d = 1.48) and a significance value (two-tailed) of 0.000. Since this value is less than 0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Therefore, the use of interactive games such as word matching and crossword puzzles proved effective in significantly improving students' vocabulary mastery at MTs Alkhairaat Alindau. This finding suggests that interactive games can serve as effective alternative strategies in EFL vocabulary teaching, particularly in similar junior high school settings.
