Abstract

Individual presentation is one of common presentations used by students to present certain topic given by the lecturers in the class. This kind of presentation may take place in a range of setting such as in the classroom by providing question-and-answer session. Individual presentation might also invite classroom interaction among the students. One specific aspect of individual presentation which may contribute to the effective classroom interaction is the use of discourse markers by the students. This paper focuses to investigate the functions of discourse markers used by the students in the individual presentation as well as the students’ interaction during the presentation. Using data from an English class, this study describes the occurrences of discourse markers (DMs) used by the students in their individual presentations. To collect data, the researchers recorded individual presentations of the students in the class. Two long recording and transcription of the individual presentations was sampled and analyzed using discourse analysis approach. The discourse markers used by the students were analyzed using Schiffrin’s perspective of discourse markers (1987). Findings show that the students’ most common use of discourse markers function as pause filler, delaying tactic, hesitation device, to order the sequence of what the speaker says. Findings of this study are relevant to improve students’ English language proficiency and serves as a beneficial input for teachers and students to create effective classroom interaction. Keywords: Individual Presentation, Discourse Markers, Discourse Analysis, Scriffin’s discourse makers (DMs) perspective

Abstract

The design of research used is qualitative research. According to Bogdan and Taylor (2022), qualitative research is a research procedure that is capable of producing descriptive data in the form of speech, writing and behavior of people being observed. This qualitative research aims to understand the status of the context to guide the interpretation of detailed and in-depth descriptions of natural conditions, based on existing reality. According to Strauss and Corbin (in Faridah Nugrahani 2014) qualitative research is a type of research whose findings are not obtained through statistical procedures or other forms of computing. Qualitative research produces descriptive data that describes the subject's situation in words and pictures, not numbers. The 2020 film challenges societal stereotypes that portray women as weak, unreliable, or incapable of learning self-defense. Instead, it presents women as strong, intelligent, and determined, demonstrating courage and resilience. The research also indicates that the film maintains a balance between showcasing feminist themes and preserving traditional feminine qualities. This is evident in Mulan's style, clothing, and her emotional response when she is expelled from the regiment. Keywords— Representation, and Feminism from the Main Character in Mulan Movie.

Abstract

Metaphors are related to the relationship between one word and another informing a meaning. A metaphor is a word or expression than meaning is figurative rather than literal because it serves to explain a concept. The metaphor in Ed Sheeran’s song analysed by using Lakoff and Johnson (2003: 10-32), metaphor is something that has another meaning and its main function is to understand. In other words, it can be interpreted that metaphor is part of figurative language which contains comparisons of one thing with another. Qualitative method is used in this research with descriptive analysis method, which answers the research question with analyzing description. In this paper, the researcher has found that it can be showed that the dominant metaphors in Ed Sheeran's song lyrics are ontological metaphors which are more dominant than structural and orientational metaphors. The significance of the metaphors in the lyrics are generally about feelings, self, or something by replacing the word concept from the known structural metaphors with another concept. The implications of this paper are the existence of an awareness and appreciation of the metaphorical moments in daily language and also in the aspect of education. Keywords : metaphors, figurative, songs, structrual metaphor, orientational metaphor

Abstract

In this study, the researcher analyzed the emotional expressions in three selected songs from Frank Ocean’s Blonde album, namely Ivy, Self-Control, and Godspeed. The research applies Parrott’s (2001) theory of emotions, which categorizes emotions into three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. A descriptive qualitative method was used to identify the emotions conveyed in the song lyrics. The findings show that the lyrics depict various emotions. Primary emotions, such as surprise and sadness, arise from spontaneous reactions. Secondary emotions, like hope and longing, are revealed through deeper reflections. Tertiary emotions, which are more complex, reflect emotional maturity and acceptance, as seen in the lyric "I let go of my claim on you, it is a free world." This study concludes that the Blonde album not only presents simple emotional reactions but also portrays a deep and complex emotional journey. These findings provide insights into how emotions are expressed through song lyrics and can serve as a reference for further studies in music and linguistics. Keywords: Emotions, Parrott’s theory, Frank Ocean, Blonde.
