Abstract

Introduction: Clean water accessibility remains a persistent challenge in rural Indonesia, especially in regions with naturally hard groundwater. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a novel dual-media biofiltration system that integrates activated carbon from Schleichera oleosa (Kesambi wood) and rice husk ash two locally abundant materials to address hard water contamination in Lanca Village, South Sulawesi. This synergistic combination represents an innovative, low-cost approach with both environmental and public health benefits in rural water treatment. Methods: Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, three water samples (n = 3) were tested for levels of CaCO?, Ca²?, Mg²?, and Fe before and after filtration. Results: The filtration system achieved substantial reductions: total hardness (CaCO?) decreased by 55.78%, calcium by 65.99%, magnesium by 40.40%, and iron by 100%. Although these changes did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05) due to the small sample size, the experimental filter outperformed a palm fiber-based control filter across all parameters. Conclusion: The study highlights the biofilter’s role not just as a technical solution, but as a promotive health technology leveraging local materials to meet national water standards while enhancing community resilience. The findings underscore its practical applicability in achieving SDG 6.1 and offer a scalable, sustainable solution for decentralized rural water treatment.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever is a major health problem in Indonesia. The existence of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is the main vector that causes Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (RI Ministry of Health, 2020). The physical environment of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito greatly influences the ecology and development of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which is the main factor causing Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (Listiono et al, 2020). The incidence of Dengue Fever in the people of Enrekang Regency is influenced by the physical environment of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Data on the physical environment of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito in the Enrekang Regency area is inadequate. In the Enrekang district area, there were 166 cases of dengue fever in 2019, in 2020 there was an increase of 209 cases and there was a decrease again in 2021 with 64 cases. Cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever sufferers in Enrekang district are among the 10 highest diseases. The aim of the research is to determine the relationship between the physical environment (temperature, pH, humidity and residential density) of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito and the incidence of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in Enrekang district. The method in this research is analytical observational using a Case Control study approach. Analytical observational research is research that tries to identify how health phenomena occur. Sampling was carried out using the total sampling method. Data was obtained directly from the Enrekang District health office. The research results showed that there was a significant relationship between room temperature, water pH and room humidity with the incidence of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in Enrekang district with respective p-values of (0.007, 0.001 and 0.000). The results of the research show that the physical environment of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is a risk factor for the occurrence of Dengue Fever in Enrekang district.

Abstract

Knowledge regarding ergonomic positions and chairs specifically designed to support comfort when working is very much needed by weavers when working. This will prevent the occurrence of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), explicitly conditions that can affect muscles, bones and joints. The method used in this activity is qualitative observational. This activity was carried out at the Niawarat and Raitawun Weaver Group on Leti Island, Southwest Maluku District. This community service activity began by providing education regarding MSDs and environmental sanitation related to trash and liquid waste from weaving, followed by education on using healthy, ergonomic chairs on non-machine looms. The results of the evaluation of weavers' knowledge were measured using process evaluation, specifically during the process of providing materials and output evaluation, explicitly by asking questions after the activity was completed, and skills in using an ergonomically healthy chair. It is hoped that this activity can be sustainable by the weaving group so that they remain healthy and productive.
