Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the implementation of technologically based applications for teaching writing. We used Storyjumper, a digital writing tool, as a technological application to complete a writing assignment. We used a case study method to understand the students' involvement in utilizing digital tools for writing assignments within a project-based learning framework. This study also aimed to describe the students’ perceptions of using the digital writing tool Storyjumper in writing activities. We collected the data using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and an observation technique, adhering to Stoller's (2006) project-based learning steps. The findings revealed that we could categorize the project-based model for teaching writing using a technological application into three stages: the planning stage, the implementation stage, and the reporting stage. We then expanded these steps into more specific stages. Meanwhile, the results of the questionnaire data analysis showed that students had positive attitudes toward using Storyjumper in writing activities. Storyjumper proved to be an engaging tool for writing activities, effectively enhancing students' writing efficiency and performance while fostering flexibility in terms of time and place to write.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of Themed English Teaching Materials, specifically integrating Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) within a TAGANA (short for Taruna Siaga Bencana, or Disaster Preparedness and Response Volunteer Team) theme to bolster junior high school students motivation and proficiency in English. Addressing the need for innovative educational methods in English teaching, this research fills an existing gap by developing and assessing TAGANA-themed materials that incorporate a HOTS-PBL approach. The study carefully selected 24 English teachers from Bengkulu, Indonesia, using purposive sampling to ensure diverse representation in qualifications, experience, and teaching methods. This study evaluates the materials content validity and instructional efficacy using the five-stage ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. The results show that incorporating HOTS and PBL into thematic teaching materials greatly enhances students English proficiency and motivation, especially with themes like TAGANA. Expert validation affirmed the strong content validity of the materials, and data from both the experimental and control groups demonstrated significant improvements in learning outcomes. The integration of HOTS and PBL into thematic teaching materials provides valuable insights into global educational practises. By fostering students higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills and incorporating the theme of TAGANA, this approach offers a progressive methodology for English education. This model makes significant contributions to educational practises globally.

Abstract

This study aims to assess and enhance the speaking performance of students in the English Department at the State Islamic University of Datokarama Palu by using the question-word method. The study, a collaborative classroom action research project, involved two cycles, each involving 22 students. Data were collected through class observations, field notes, a questionnaire, and a speaking test. The study aimed to identify students' speaking abilities based on predetermined success criteria. The findings revealed that incorporating question words into the teaching process significantly increased students' motivation, responsiveness, enthusiasm, and confidence in speaking English. Additionally, this method helped students comprehend the content of questions before responding, allowing them to articulate their ideas more effectively. In the first cycle, only five students (23%) met the success criteria, indicating the need for further intervention. However, by the second cycle, 17 students (77%) achieved the success criteria, demonstrating that the question-word technique effectively enhanced their speaking performance. These results suggest that mastering question words is a valuable strategy for improving students' speaking abilities in English, particularly in an Islamic university context

Abstract

To limit the spread of the Covid-19 virus, rapid modifications in instructional delivery transitioned from in-person to online education. The Covid-19 outbreak sparked a historic global push to learn and teach remote languages via Internet venues. The rapid transition from face-to-face to remote learning is significantly distinct from planned online learning. Due to a shortage of resources and preparation chances, both language teachers and students have quickly shifted to depending on online learning in the overwhelming majority of cases. Their tales demonstrate endurance, resourcefulness, and bravery under extremely difficult circumstances. Understanding the nature of this transition can help to advance Online Teaching (hereinafter OT) and Emergency Remote Teaching (hereafter ERT). This qualitative and descriptive study looks into the unexpected and radical changes in English ERT, with a focus on the conceptual framework for developing relevant and engaging ERT and student engagement during ERT. Several studies have been conducted in various regions of the world to investigate the methods and procedures created by English Language Teaching (hereinafter ELT) to help students strengthen their English language and literacy skills. These conceptual advances are studied and shown, as are the various ways how ELT responded to the difficulties raised. Different conceptual shifts necessitate a variety of ELT approaches to the challenges identified, which are demonstrated and addressed. This report summarises the investigation's primary findings and offers recommendations for teaching English remotely.

The results of this study indicated that most of the students thought that self-assessment very helpful for them because it allowed them to know their functionality and develop it to achieve the course goal specifically the speaking course objective. However, some students though that self-assessment was considerably useful since the teacher not often use this assignment and the students not take pleasure in whereas attempting to assess themselves.
