Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the implementation of technologically based applications for teaching writing. We used Storyjumper, a digital writing tool, as a technological application to complete a writing assignment. We used a case study method to understand the students' involvement in utilizing digital tools for writing assignments within a project-based learning framework. This study also aimed to describe the students’ perceptions of using the digital writing tool Storyjumper in writing activities. We collected the data using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and an observation technique, adhering to Stoller's (2006) project-based learning steps. The findings revealed that we could categorize the project-based model for teaching writing using a technological application into three stages: the planning stage, the implementation stage, and the reporting stage. We then expanded these steps into more specific stages. Meanwhile, the results of the questionnaire data analysis showed that students had positive attitudes toward using Storyjumper in writing activities. Storyjumper proved to be an engaging tool for writing activities, effectively enhancing students' writing efficiency and performance while fostering flexibility in terms of time and place to write.

The results of the study on second-semester students, experienced a good increase from the learning outcomes of the first cycle to the second cycle, with the standard value of student learning mastery of 85 classical standards. The average value in the first cycle is 48.00 with the level of completeness of learning outcomes in the first cycle of 10% and 90% incomplete. While the learning outcomes in the second cycle with an average value of 85.46 with the completeness level of learning outcomes in the second cycle of 96%, this figure indicates that the average value of the first cycle and the second cycle has increased so that the smartphone-based Pinterest application in improving speaking skills can improve student learning outcomes. Abstract

Scholars and practitioners should be aware that writing a good and eye-catching abstract is significant but tough work. Scholars and researchers are challenged to produce an informative and persuasive abstract to be accepted then published in either national or international publication and they should know the current characteristics of abstracts written by the students or apprentice writers. The study aims at examining the comparison of discourse structure and linguistic features between English abstracts of research articles by Indonesian researchers and English abstracts of the thesis by Indonesian scholars. The corpus data were taken from 10 research articles abstracts of Indonesian researchers concerning English education published in ERIC and 10 thesis abstracts of the graduate program of English Education in UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Thus, a genre-based analysis proposed by Bhatia’s move structure and Swales’ and Feak’s move structure will be used to investigate the discourse structure and Paltridge starfields will be used to investigate linguistic features. The results indicated that 60% of abstracts published in the international journal were organized well while 40% of thesis abstracts were not organized well. Furthermore, past tenses were frequently used in both article abstracts and thesis abstracts in terms of aim, method, and result move. While present tense was still used in aim and result move in article abstracts. In conclusion, most abstracts published in international publications used well organizational move. While most abstracts published in local ones are not used well organizational move. Keywords: Discourse structure; linguistic features; research article abstracts; rhetorical move; thesis abstracts.

Abstract

Students can be motivated by making them aware of their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Guiding the student could include addressing the subject’s goals, the nature of the activities, and the techniques used to complete the tasks, including supporting them in determining the best ways to learn. Providing learning facilities indicates that the instructor should be able to facilitate and simplify learning. This is essentially characterized as creating and establishing suitable learning settings and providing learning resources. This piece of paper will emphasise a literature review on the KARDS Model as an alternative conceptualization for language training. The review is based on journal papers, conference proceedings, and book chapters that explore Kumaravadivelu's KARDS Model. The scope of this discussion is limited to the following points: (1) presenting Postmodernism as a relevant theoretical framework in the context of language teacher education and (2) presenting the KARDS model as an alternative conceptual outline that can help language teachers address teaching issues more effectively. This finding demonstrates that teachers must keep their knowledge, which serves as their academic medium of communication, up to date in order to survive in academic contexts. Their enhanced professional and personal knowledge is projected to lead to more positive perceptions. This distinction may be justified by the circulation of knowledge transfer and building, the routine exchange of knowledge, and academicians' access to the most recent results. Keywords: Alternative Approach, KARDS Model, and Language Education

Abstract

This study aims to determine the correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension among Grade XI students at MAN 2 Palu City. This study was motivated by the limited English vocabulary of students, which often affects their ability to accurately understand spoken English. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design to analyze the relationship between the two variables. The research sample consisted of 35 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through vocabulary tests, listening comprehension tests, and supporting questionnaires that measured students' perceptions and attitudes towards vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension in English language learning. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 26 with normality, linearity, and Pearson Product Moment correlation tests. The results showed a strong and significant positive correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension (r = 0.768, p = 0.000). These findings indicate that students with better vocabulary mastery tend to have higher listening comprehension. In addition, the questionnaire results also show a positive perception of English language learning, which supports student engagement and motivation. Thus, vocabulary mastery plays an important role in improving listening comprehension, and the integration of vocabulary learning into listening activities is recommended to improve students' English learning outcomes.
