Abstract

English language instruction that moves away from offline to online should become the EFL lecturers’ concern for their students’ successful learning outcome. The students must be kept in the lecturers’ mind when they plan and program the instruction. This study aims at investigating the students’ perceptions and preferences on English instruction through e-learning implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research applies a qualitative approach in a descriptive method design by involving 106 English class students from three different higher educations in Aceh, Indonesia. The thematic and comparative analyses are applied in analyzing the data. The findings of the study show that 50% of the students impress negative features concerning the internet network, a high need of internet quotas, the limitation of learning material explanation and absorption, and the social media influences. The study also reveals that 59.6% of positive features dominate the findings associated with the students’ interest in e-learning implementation as a new learning experience/exploration, engagement and enthusiasm, the flexibility of time and place, and the advance of digital technology usage and adaptation. Besides, WhatsApp, Opensimka, Google Classroom, and Google Meet have become the four most preferable e-learning platform among the respondents. It implies that e-learning implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic gives a variety of practical benefits to university students in the virtual English class. Yet, this still requires sufficient mentoring and extra supporting digital tools for the students and the lecturers.

Abstract

This study examines online collaborative writing (CW) teaching techniques via asynchronous computer-mediated communication multimodality, i.e., Google Docs. This study attempts to investigate what Indonesian learners perceive concerning writing collaboratively in Google Docs during online learning. This study collected data from 20 Primary School Teacher Education (PSTE) students enrolling in an English 3 (Academic Writing) class at a private university in Indonesia. The findings showed that the participants perceived online collaborative writing as a good way to develop their writing and communication skills. It was found that feedback from peers and the teacher was considered beneficial to the learners’ writing development during the implementation of online collaborative writing (OCW). Even though interaction among learners can be enhanced in OCW, learners’ lack of participation was one of the drawbacks discovered in this study. It is hoped that this study can contribute significantly to English writing instructors considering the benefits and the drawbacks of OCW before implementing OCW in their university classrooms.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates perceptions of, attitudes toward, challenges in, and how critique is influencing students’ academic and reflective growth. Data were collected according to a mixed-methods study design through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 25 undergraduate students enrolled in a Critical Reading course at Universitas Samudra. It has been found that appreciation by the students of the significance of critique in building critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and academic writing exists, but they find it challenging to handle complex terminologies, identifying arguments, and being objective. Time also seems to be a limiting factor. Students perceive that guided practice, group discussion, and further practice would make them more competent in critiquing. The literature addresses the need for learning processes that enable students to transition from recapitulation to critical thinking, and eventually to more intellectual engagement and confidence in scholarship. The literature guides the overarching argument about critical reading and its role in college learning.

Abstract

Pronunciation is commonly regarded as one of the most difficult skills for students learning English as a foreign language (EFL). In response, ELF learners have explored various strategies to improve their pronunciation, including by using digital media platforms such as Spotify. EFL learners can utilize Spotify to access authentic English through its music, lyrics, and spoken content. In this present study, the aim is to investigate Indonesian university students’ perceptions, perceived benefits, and challenges associated with using Spotify to support their English pronunciation development. The study also seeks to identify specific Spotify features that aid in this learning process. By employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study collected data by means of interviews with eight students from the English Education Department at Universitas Bina Bangsa Getsempena (UBBG), Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The participants were selected by using snowball sampling. The findings of the study revealed that in general, most students had positive views regarding Spotify in boosting English pronunciation. They mentioned a number of benefits in terms of lyrics, karaoke mode, and podcasts, such as contributing to enhanced listening skills and vocabulary acquisition, while some students found the podcast feature less effective for developing speaking proficiency. To conclude, Spotify can be a valuable supplementary resource in English pronunciation learning, as it provides an engaging and flexible learning experience for EFL students
