Abstract

Gorontalo City has recently experienced weather anomalies, with air temperatures reaching 35.2°C, the highest recorded in the last three decades. This study aims to describe the trend and spatial distribution of land surface temperature (LST) in Gorontalo City. Data were analyzed using Google Earth Engine through a spatial–temporal descriptive approach. The results show that the city’s LST has increased, indicated by the expansion of the very high temperature category from 5% in 2014, to 40% in 2019, and 47% of the total area in 2024. This increase is more pronounced in the northern part of the city, particularly in Kota Utara and Kota Barat Districts, which exhibit the highest temperatures. The trend analysis further reveals that the very high LST class experienced the most significant rise over the 2014–2024 period (slope +1.581; R² = 0.87), while the high LST class declined due to class shifting toward very high. These findings may serve as a reference for strengthening urban green space planning and management in Gorontalo City to mitigate temperature escalation resulting from rapid land conversion and urban development.

Abstract

Environmental cleanliness in densely populated coastal areas remains a critical issue, influenced not only by infrastructure but also by human behavior. This study examines the role of wayfinding and signage design in promoting environmental cleanliness in Makassar City. A quantitative approach was conducted through a survey of 174 respondents across four coastal locations in Makassar, Indonesia. The study measured environmental cleanliness, navigation and orientation, signage effectiveness, and design preference, and applied MANOVA and ANOVA to analyze differences across locations. The findings reveal that while navigation is generally adequate and signage is perceived as effective and visually appealing, environmental cleanliness remains low, indicating a gap between awareness and behavior. Significant differences were found in cleanliness, signage effectiveness, and design preference, but not in navigation. Based on these findings, the study proposes a design framework that enhances signage as a behavior-oriented communication system. This research highlights the importance of combining data-driven insights and design of wayfinding and signage to promote sustainable environmental behavior in coastal urban environments.

Abstract

This research aims to develop two model-drawing methods based on students’ levels of competency, guided by a psychological approach to working memory. The study adopts a qualitative method with a case study design. Observations were carried out by analyzing six samples of model drawings produced by students in the Visual Arts Education program, Faculty of Art and Design. The drawings were categorized into two levels, expert and novice, based on students’ performance in proportion, coloring, and detail. The findings show that (1) three students belong to the expert level, producing highly impressive model drawings whose proportions, coloring, and details are close to perfection; (2) three students fall into the novice level, with their proportions, coloring, and object forms still at a minimal or below-standard quality; and (3) one commonly used method is found to be unsuitable for all learners. Therefore, this research proposes two model-drawing methods according to students’ competency levels: the Golden Ratio technique for expert-level students and a proportion-and-shape-based technique for novice learners.

Abstract

This study investigates how generative artificial intelligence (AI) interprets, reconstructs, and transforms the vernacular morphology of Bugis traditional architecture. Using a qualitative computational mixed-method design, the research combines field documentation of twenty Bugis houses with image-based generative modeling using diffusion frameworks. The results reveal that AI is capable of reproducing prominent morphological attributes including the saddle-shaped roof, elevated stilt structure, symmetrical façade, and longitudinal spatial axis demonstrating its ability to learn visually salient patterns from architectural datasets. However, significant transformations emerge in elevation, materiality, and spatial orientation, driven largely by algorithmic biases toward modernist forms. More critically, symbolic and cosmological elements central to Bugis architectural ontology such as vertical spatial hierarchy, ritual thresholds, and carved motifs are frequently diminished or omitted, indicating AI’s limited capacity to interpret intangible cultural meaning. Despite these limitations, AI-generated hybrid forms provide valuable speculative insights into potential vernacular futures, suggesting that generative models can function as creative tools when guided by cultural expertise. The study concludes that generative AI offers meaningful opportunities for visualization and design innovation but must be integrated with culturally informed frameworks to ensure ethical and accurate representation of indigenous architectural heritage.
