Abstract

Brown marine algae are provided for an excellent source of bioactive compounds especially fucoidan. Fucoidan is primarily composed of L-fucose residues linked by α-1,3 and α-1,4 glycosidic bonds, with sulfate groups as its main chemical components. One of the biological activities of fucoidan is antioxidant. Antioxidant activities of Indonesian brown marine algae were investigated. The phytochemical screening of the crude extract was conducted to identify various phytochemical constituents, including carbohydrates, flavonoids, phenolic compound, terpenoids, and proteins and amino acid. The antioxidant activity of the brown marine algae Sargassum turbinarioides was evaluated using free radical scavenging through the DPPH assay and a reducing power assay. The antioxidant capacity of the extracted fucoidan was measured against ascorbic acid, revealing that fucoidan from brown marine algae exhibited lower DPPH radical scavenging activity compared to vitamin C. Meanwhile, the reducing power of the extract increased with higher concentrations, demonstrating a dose-dependent effect. These findings suggest that brown marine algae extract has potential for commercialization as a functional food or dietary supplement owing to its significant antioxidative properties.

Abstract

Background: Artemisinin resistance mediated by Kelch13 mutations threatens malaria elimination efforts. Xanthones from Garcinia mangostana present a promising alternative scaffold for antimalarial drug development. Objective: This study systematically identified potent xanthones reported in the literature and evaluated their pharmacological potential using computational methods. Methods: A comprehensive systematic review was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Wiley Online Library (through September 2025) following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching for "Xanthone" combined with "Antimalarial" or "Plasmodium". Selection criteria included original research reporting IC50 values against Plasmodium falciparum. Results: Among 165 identified compounds from 46 studies, 18 demonstrated potent activity (IC50 < 1 µM). Structure-Activity Relationship analysis revealed that synthetic xanthones with alkylamino side chains were substantially more efficacious than natural isolates. Compound 117 (3-(3- (dimethylamino)propoxy)-6,8-dihydroxy-2-methoxy-7-(3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl)-9H-xanthen-9- one) emerged as the lead candidate with IC50 of 0.1 µM. In silico ADMET profiling predicted superior intestinal absorption (>90%), compliance with Lipinski's Rule, and a favourable-toxicity profile (non-mutagenic, non-hepatotoxic) compared to the natural prototype α-mangostin. Conclusion: This integrated systematic review-cheminformatics approach, strengthened by transparent multi-criteria prioritization, identified Compound 117 as a promising pre-clinical candidate requiring further biological evaluation, including in vivo efficacy in rodent malaria models, in vitro cytotoxicity profiling, and experimental validation of predicted CYP interactions before advancing toward clinical translation.

Abstract

Abstract. Glossolalia is often reduced either to a meaningless linguistic deviation or to a form of private mysticism, shielded from theological critique and public reflection. This article proposes an alternative reading of glossolalia as verbum ineffabile—an apophatic utterance and prophetic liturgical act that signals divine presence beyond the boundaries of representation. Through a conceptual hermeneutical approach, this study integrates Wittgenstein’s language games and forms of life, Derrida’s différance and trace, and Caputo’s theopoetics of the event. The finding reveals that glossolalia is not merely a linguistic anomaly, but an embodied, communal, and subversive act of faith that disrupts established semiotic and liturgical structures.
