Abstract

Massive boundaries such as walls are no longer synonymous with understanding space because space can be born from various processes or activities that are taking place. Just like the creative process of old manuscripts related to culture and history can create space. Therefore, this qualitative research aims to present an alternative perspective on space formation associated with the experience of the creative process of making Bogor batik motifs based on the Bujangga Manik manuscript. A phenomenological approach with descriptive presentation is applied to research discussions which are strengthened by the space and the creative process theories. This study reveals what form the creative and cultural space in the process of making batik motifs, namely tangible components such as creative stages that guide the transformation of written cultural texts into sketches, and intangible elements, namely the meaning of batik motifs based on Bujangga Manik Manuscript. This research contributes to Indonesian creativity and traditions in cultural products to a wide audience.

Abstract

Many people in the world travel to beautiful places by road, air or sea. But not all of these journeys are immortalised in a complete diary, which is why Bujangga Manik, a Sundanese rishi, was so special when his travel notes were so complete and written on palm leaves. The aim of the research is to visually reveal one of Bujangga Manik's journeys. The method used is descriptive qualitative method with a visual language approach. The sample of this research is a batik motif created based on the idea of Bujangga Manik's journey. The result of this research are batik motifs that were initiated from Bujangga Manik's journey that highlight local wisdom with red, yellow and black colours. The composition of batik motifs, arranged from the main motif that is made large and considered important, as a symbol of the object of importance. The batik motifs produced can become unique commercial products, able to attract the interest of the wider community and have economic potential, as well as opening up new market opportunities thereby increasing added value for the batik industry. These findings not only enrich batik designs, but also contribute to raising the local cultural and historical values contained in the Bujangga Manik manuscript. This research shows how ancient visual elements can be adapted and integrated into batik artwork, thus becoming a bridge between the past and the present.

Abstract

The importance of preserving Sumatra batik motifs as a cultural heritage is facing major challenges in the digital era. The problem of this research lies in the difficulties in digitalizing and commercializing batik motifs effectively and maintaining authenticity and cultural value. This article aims to explore the use of the Turtle Graphic as a tool for digitalizing and down-streaming Sumatra batik motifs. Turtle graphics were initially crafted as an instructive instrument for educational settings, paving the way for teachers to demonstrate drawing concepts. On a different note, it also serves convenience to coders needing graphic output - offering them a solution without necessitating more complicated or external libraries in their projects. The research method involves applying graphical programming (using Turtle graphics) to produce digital representations of batik motifs. The technical aspects of digitization implemented in the Turtle Graphic are (1) data identification, which is done by creating a table to select motifs that are currently rare; (2) motifs that have been identified are revitalized through making simple sketches; (3) sketches are made in digital Turtle Graphics to make it easier for MSMEs to document and implement into prototype batik models. One example of the batik motif used in this research is the Daun Sirih Melayu batik motif. This batik motif often uses images of betel leaves that are intertwined and sticking out.  The Daun Sirih Melayu batik motif was chosen as a representative example because the philosophical meaning of the betel leaf batik motif symbolizes a form of respect. Betel leaves are also important in tradition, especially at proposals, weddings, traditional title awards, and other events. The research results show that Turtle Graphics can simplify digitalization. These contribute to the preservation and socialization of Sumatra batik and support the sustainability and popularization of batik in an increasingly digital global context.  Academics can also use this research as a basis for further research, while for MSMEs, it is a good opportunity to implement it in batik centers in the archipelago, especially on Sumatra island.

Abstract

Using the Turtle Graphic algorithm to digitize and develop Sumatra batik motifs is an innovative step in preserving local wisdom. This algorithm, which was originally used in graphics programming to educate children about computer concepts, is now being utilized to design and reproduce intricate and detailed batik motifs. The problem is that most existing batik motifs have not been digitally stored. Therefore, the purpose of the research here is to digitize Sumatra batik motifs using the Turtle Graphics algorithm. Turtle graphics utilizes command-based programming principles to draw geometric shapes. As an icon for North Sumatra Province, the basic motif of the existing water tower batik is the focus of this pattern accuracy. It is documented using a Python program that uses the turtle graphics algorithm, and a new Sumatran batik motif design is created from this basic motif. The benefits of research results with this approach are that designers can digitally modify and reproduce traditional batik motifs. This algorithm allows the drawing of patterns with high accuracy, making creating consistent and precise motifs easier. This digitization process also helps document and preserve batik motifs. The use of this technology not only speeds up the design process but also provides wider access to the younger generation and the international community to appreciate and learn about Sumatra batik. By integrating modern technology and local wisdom, the digitization of rare batik motifs has the potential to strengthen cultural identity and increase the economic value of traditional batik products. The specific steps in the motif digitization or pattern-making process are as follows: determine the motif to be digitized, select the starting point of the moving turtle, determine the turtle's direction of motion in relation to the curve to be formed, execute the program, and if the turtle curve does not move in the desired direction, change the program and execute again until the turtle motion curve matches the desired curve. This process is repeated multiple times.

Abstract

Relief print is one of the techniques in graphic arts. The process of making a relief print is considered easy because it uses simple tools and materials, so that the artwork produced from this relief printing process is considered less creative and innovative. Conventional printmaking rules have predefined indicators. This creation research aims to produce novelty in graphic arts based on the concept of Javanese tradition. The method used is a mix of methods, namely the artistic creation process method: experimentation, reflection and creation of works. The creation of high-level printed artworks is made with a mix of media on the basis of Javanese tradition visually, so it is hoped that these works of art will be able to compete in the international world. The results of this creation research have innovations and creations in the form of contemporary art works extracted from Javanese traditional art.

Abstract

Sumatran batik has motifs that have deep meanings adopted from everyday life, and many are already rarely produced. The problem in this study is how the process of revitalizing Sumatran batik will be downstream into the creative industry. The purpose of this study is to create a digital revitalization model for rare Sumatran batik motifs, with a focus on their integration into the local creative industry, which can increase cultural awareness and increase market potential in the creative industry. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a visual language approach. The sample in this study is a digital batik with a sample of the Tarok-tarok Boraspati produced by MSMEs. Results show that digitizing batik motifs not only maintains visual authenticity but also enables scalable and market-relevant innovation, contributing to cultural preservation and creative economic growth. The main result is a structured batik composition that maintains the identity of the main motif while enabling wider commercial applications. This approach offers a replicable model for other cultural regions that aim to combine heritage with innovation and increase global cultural visibility through the creative industry.
