Abstract

This study aims to examine the significant impact of utilizing the school environment as a learning resource on students’ interest in learning Biology among seventh-grade students at SMPN 10 Sigi. The research applied a quasi-experimental design involving 55 students, divided into an experimental class and a control class. Data collection techniques included observation of students’ learning interest, interviews with the science teacher, and a post-test to assess academic understanding. Instruments used in this study comprised observation sheets, structured interview guides, and post-test items. Both descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed a substantial difference between the two groups. The experimental class, which engaged in outdoor and environment-based learning activities, achieved an average interest score of 92.5% (categorized as Very Good), while the control class, which received conventional classroom instruction, scored 76.2% (categorized as Good). Students in the experimental group showed increased enthusiasm, curiosity, and active participation, particularly during explorative activities related to biodiversity around the school grounds. These results confirm that integrating the school environment into the learning process not only enhances student engagement but also fosters a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. The study concludes that effective use of the school environment can significantly increase students’ interest and motivation in learning science, especially in rural or under-resourced educational settings.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the learning difficulties of 8th-grade students in Science (Biology) at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. This type of research is descriptive. The subjects in this research were all students of classes VIII A and VIII B, consisting of 46 students. The data collection technique used was a questionnaire on factors influencing students' learning difficulties. The results of the study showed that the average internal difficulty factor for the "agree" response was 27%, while "disagree" was 73%. For the external difficulty factor, the "agree" response was 31%, while "disagree" was 69%. These results indicate that students' learning difficulties are classified as high in both internal and external factors. Therefore, it can be concluded that both external and internal factors significantly contribute to the high level of learning difficulties in the Science subject at SMP Negeri 19 Palu.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) aims to enhance students’ learning motivation through the implementation of the Snowball Throwing learning model. The study was conducted at SMAN 1 Palu with 35 students of class XI MIPA 6 as the research subjects. The CAR was carried out in three phases: pre-action, Cycle I, and Cycle II. Data were collected through observation and a learning motivation questionnaire. The findings revealed that students’ learning motivation in the pre-action phase was categorized as “fair” with a percentage of 54%. After the implementation of the Snowball Throwing model in Cycle I, students’ motivation increased to 72% (“high” category), and in Cycle II it further improved to 87% (“very high” category). These results indicate that the Snowball Throwing model is effective in improving students’ learning motivation, as it actively engages them in discussion and collaborative activities, making the learning process more interactive and enjoyable. The implication of this study is that teachers may employ the Snowball Throwing model as an alternative instructional strategy in Biology learning to foster students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to identify medicinal plant species, describe the plant parts used and their processing methods, and develop learning media in the form of a pocket book and flipbook in Lakuan Village, Lakea Sub-district, Buol Regency. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach through field observations, interviews with key informants (traditional healers) and supporting informants (medicinal plant users), as well as documentation. Data were analyzed descriptively by grouping plant species, used parts, and processing techniques, supported by literature review. The results showed 32 species from 24 families, with specific plant parts used, namely leaves for fever and wounds due to their ease of processing, roots for internal diseases, rhizomes as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents, stems for relaxation, fruits for digestion and immunity, and flowers for cough treatment. The pocket book and flipbook media were chosen because they are practical, concise, and interactive, making it easier for students to understand the material. The feasibility test results indicated that the media was categorized as highly feasible as a context-based learning resource.
