Abstract

For the formulation of policy strategies on the use of environmentally friendly stimulant in the production of pine resin, the study of innovation stimulant is a necessity. This study aimed to identify the use of stimulants made from a strong acid (inorganic), ETRAT and wood vinegar on pine tapping. Research results revealed that the use of stimulants could increase resin flux and extend. Inorganic stimulant produced resin more than ETRAT and wood vinegar per collection in area with elevation above 500 ASL and below 500 ASL. The use of inorganic stimulant, however, caused the change of wood colour that will be dark brown to reddish even that going into as far as to the pith of wood. Meanwhile, the use of organic stimulant doesn't cause the change of colour in wood significantly. Therefore the use of stimulants on tapping pine needs to consider the negative effects of trees's health, workers and the environment.The economic aspect that should be persued to achieve the financial target, is not the main factor only but the ecological and sosial aspects to achieve a yield sustainability and tree producing are requared.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the private sector’s perspective on the sustainable transition of degraded forestlands, including the transformation of oil palm plantations in forest areas into multipurpose forests, identify current barriers in adopting sustainable multipurpose forest management practices on financing and policy aspects, and explore how the private sector can step up its role in forestland restoration. This study was based on field observations, key informant interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and literature reviews. This study aims to navigate a path for policy implementation toward decarbonization, as tenurial conflicts, particularly between oil palm plantations and forest areas, are critical for sustainable forest management in Riau. The private sector's interest in sustainable multipurpose forest management is higher when additional benefits from non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are high. This study also found that the private sector’s desire to support sustainable multipurpose forest management stems from the potential benefits of carbon trading. Regarding the carbon market, most respondents are willing to join when  carbon prices are USD4–6 ton-1 of CO2e. It indicates that the private sector is willing to support the domestic carbon market as regulated under the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation 21/2022. While the private sector has complied with most transformative policies and mechanisms, respondents expect further incentives and support, particularly to resolve the forestland conflict.

Abstract

The concept of multi-business forestry (Mb-F) aims to increase the economic benefits of forests, which have thus far made little contribution, without ignoring their ecological functions. The opportunity to develop multi-business forestry in social forestry (SF) activities within the Forest Area with Special Management (Kawasan Hutan Dengan Pengelolaan Khusus/KHDPK) is huge. With one area management permit, many business activities can be carried out. This study aims to determine the feasibility of multi-business forestry using screening method for social acceptance (community preference), financial feasibility (NPV, B/C Ratio, and IRR), and ecological suitability (soil type, rainfall, and location altitude). The results show that socially, the community accepts and has even implemented the concept of multi-business forestry through agroforestry. However, most permit holders consider it necessary to regulate the number of trees to optimize land use. Economically, all multi-business patterns implemented are feasible, with the presence of aren (Arenga pinnata) and sheep being important keys to the sustainability of SF. Ecologically, some NTFPs species cultivated by the community are less suited to local conditions, which can result in suboptimal production. The existence of investors or business entities is very important in the sustainability of forestry multi-businesses, which are mostly based on NTFPs and require high capital.

Abstract

The mangrove area of ​​6,286.80 hectares, managed by KPH Banyumas Barat on the coast of Cilacap Regency, faces various anthropogenic pressures, including land conversion to fishponds, residential expansion, and port or fishing infrastructure. However, comprehensive studies on the temporal dynamics of mangrove land cover change in this area remain very limited, even though this information is essential for formulating effective conservation and management strategies. This study aims to examine the multitemporal dynamics of mangrove land cover change (2019–2024) in KPH Banyumas Barat, Cilacap Regency, using a machine learning approach that combines Sentinel-2 imagery, multispectral vegetation indices, and Random Forest classification on the Google Earth Engine platform. The results show a decline in mangrove cover of 533.6 ha over the 2019–2024 period. Two phases of change were identified: during 2019–2022, mangrove area showed an increasing trend of 46.4 ha, while during 2022–2024, mangrove area decreased by 580.1 ha due to both natural and anthropogenic processes, which may weaken the ecological functions of the area, reduce coastal protection against abrasion, and threaten the livelihoods of coastal fishing communities whose income depends directly on the productivity of the mangrove ecosystem.
