Abstract

The maritime industry, a cornerstone of global trade, relies heavily on effective communication to ensure operational safety and efficiency. English has been established as the lingua franca through the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). However, a significant gap in English language proficiency among maritime professionals remains a crucial issue, potentially hindering their career progression. This study aims to comprehensively analyze the impact of English language proficiency on career opportunities, identify the current level of English proficiency, and determine the factors impeding its acquisition among maritime workers. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research gathered data through questionnaires from 100 respondents and in-depth interviews with HR managers and seafarers. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. Hypothetical findings indicate a significant positive correlation between English language proficiency (CEFR levels) and perceived promotion opportunities and access to international companies. Key barriers identified include a lack of specific maritime English training (English for Specific Purposes), low motivation, and limited access to learning resources while at sea. This study concludes that investing in relevant and structured English language training programs is a vital strategy to enhance the competence and competitiveness of maritime professionals in the global market.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate digital storytelling-based listening materials that integrate the local culture of Riau Islands to enhance students' listening comprehension. The research employed a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach involving iterative cycles of design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The participants consisted of 35 university students, three lecturers, and three experts in material, language, and media validation. Data were collected through questionnaires, expert validation forms, and pre-test–post-test assessments. The design phase resulted in audiovisual storytelling materials featuring local cultural narratives and interactive comprehension activities. Expert validation indicated that the materials were highly feasible, with mean scores above 85% across material, language, and media aspects. The implementation results revealed a significant improvement in students' listening comprehension, as shown by an increase in the mean score from 61.31 (pre-test) to 80.89 (post-test) with a mean gain of 19.57 points (p .001). The findings suggest that digital storytelling enriched with local culture can serve as an effective and engaging alternative medium for listening instruction. This study contributes to the integration of culturally grounded digital pedagogy in language learning and supports the contextualization of English instruction in multicultural settings.

Abstract

Abstract

The increasing importance of English communication in today’s globalized world necessitates effective language learning strategies, especially in speaking. However, traditional teaching methods often fail to engage students and build their confidence in speaking. This study explores the role of technology in improving students' speaking skills in English language learning, focusing on tools such as speech recognition software, language exchange platforms, and interactive video conferencing. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study involved 120 undergraduate students in a quasi- experimental design with a control and an experimental group. The experimental group utilized digital tools for speaking practice, while the control group received traditional instruction. The results indicated significant improvements in fluency, pronunciation, and overall speaking confidence in the experimental group. Survey and observational data also showed higher levels of student engagement and motivation. The study concludes that integrating technology into English language teaching can effectively enhance speaking skills by providing immersive, interactive learning experiences that foster autonomy and confidence. These findings highlight the potential of technology to bridge gaps in traditional language learning approaches.

Abstract

Maritime English-speaking proficiency is a critical competency for seafarers to ensure safe and effective international maritime communication. However, speaking performance among vocational maritime cadets in Indonesia routinely falls below required global standards. This qualitative descriptive study, employing a narrative inquiry approach, investigated the specific English-speaking difficulties and underlying influencing factors among twenty purposively selected fourth-semester Marine Engineering cadets at Barombong Merchant Marine Polytechnic. Data collected via in-depth interviews and non-participant classroom observations were systematically analyzed utilizing the Miles and Huberman framework. The findings reveal that cadets confront severe linguistic barriers (restricted vocabulary, pronunciation errors, and grammatical deficiencies) alongside profound psychological hurdles (debilitating anxiety, low self-confidence, and fear of making mistakes). Furthermore, these difficulties are compounded by an interplay of internal and external factors, including socio-economic backgrounds, conventional instructor pedagogy, substandard language facilities, senior peer pressure, and exhaustive physical training schedules. Collectively, these multi-dimensional constraints severely impede communicative competence. This study underscores the urgent need for targeted pedagogical interventions, curriculum alignment, and institutional policy reforms to enhance Maritime English proficiency and ensure global maritime workforce readiness.
