Abstract

Creative thinking skills are important for long-term success. Empowering creative thinking skills which can be trained through problem-solving activities in learning, thereby promoting high cognitive engagement. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of the research and development product of Problem-Based Learning module of environmental changes in empowering students’ creative thinking skills. The research method used was the Quasi-experiment with nonequivalent control group design. The sample of the research was the tenth-graders of a Senior High School in Karanganyar district, Central Java. The sampling was cluster sampling by involving two classes, namely the Grade X-MIA 1 with 28 students and the X-MIA 4 with 28 students. The qualitative and quantitative-descriptive approaches were used to analyze the data. The result shows the mean of creative thinking skills score of experiment group is higher than the control group. This developed module could empower students’ creative thinking skills by problem-solving activities as needed for Indonesian educational goal . The study concludes that development module was constructed based on Problem-based Learning activities in the module could stimulate students solved and identified the problems with their ideas and developed their creative thinking.

Abstract

Based on our observation to student and discussion with biology teacher of SMPN 27 Surakarta on April 15, 2010, known that there were complicated problems in Biology class VII-D. The core of those problems was most of the students’ ability on higher order thinking was still lower, therefore, in this research we want to try to solve the problems by classroom action research (CAR). Some studies shown that applying syntax of inquiry and STAD model have many advantages to solve this problem. Hence, these models was applied in this school. The research was conducted during 7 months, start from April until November 2010. The research design was Classroom Actions Research by Kemis and Taggart model, which consist of four phases, i.e. planning of action, doing the action, observation, and reflection. The result of this research showed that applying syntax of integrated inquiry and STAD model can improve the student ability on higher order thinking at Biology classes of grade VII SMPN 27 Surakarta.

Abstract

Developing a practical tool in ecology that addresses the challenge of transferring the ecologicalconcept systematically has become an essential factor in achieving a better understanding of the teaching process. Three-layer Observation Framework (TlOF) is one of the best methods that can be adopted in designing practical work in ecology since its power in providing a step-by-step concept reconstruction. This research aimed to develop a sample of practical work in ecological teaching and learning based on the TlOF. This research followed the ADDIE method in developing the product with some modifications. The research focus was set to gain product’s appropriateness from validators and users. The developed product was tested in Biology Education Department at the State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta in order to collect responses for further product improvement. The results of the appropriateness test from three validators showed that the developed product is “very good” with an average score of 81.8. During the performed preliminary test by users, as high as 82.5 was achieved. It means that the developed product gained a good perception from the respondents. According to the results, TlOF-based mobile learning the practical tool is the potential to become an alternative media in improving practical work in term of encompassing ecological concepts.

Abstract

Students tend to be passive in learning activities if the media is less supportive. Module development as a learning medium can overcome the passivity of students. The purpose of this research was to determine the validity and feasibility of the guided inquiry-based module on Human Digestive System materials to improve students' argumentation skill. This research is Research and Development. The research was conducted at class VIII of State Junior High School 3 of Surakarta. The module comprised of into three parts, namely the introduction, content, and closing. The contents section consisted of three sub-materials, namely: 1) food substances; 2) food digestion organs and processes; and 3) food digestive system disorders. The module feasibility was tested through the assessments of media, subject matter, learning experts and linguists. The results of experts’ evaluation toward the module showed that the module was feasible with the percentages were 88.28% (media design), 90.125% (material), 91.15% (learning aspect), and 94.8% (language). Therefore, the module is feasible to be used as a learning medium to improve students' argumentation skill.

Abstract

Nowadays environmental issues challenge the educational field to cultivate problem solving process and creative thinking skills in students. The objective of this research was to observe the problem solving process and creative thinking of students at State Senior High School in Klaten Regency in solving the ecosystem problem based on the academic ability (high, medium, and low). This research was qualitative which used think-aloud technique in which the subjects (S) were nine students chosen by using stratified random sampling technique. The data analysis used was triangulation. The problem solving process skill was scored from the students? thinking structure in tackling the problem served. Furthermore, the students? creative thinking ability was measured from the students? final results in coping ecosystem problem which then was scored based on the creative thinking skill rubric. The results showed that there were errors found in problem solving process of S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S8 and S9 due to their lack of background knowledge. Meanwhile, the errors resulted by S7 were caused of misconception. In addition, the students who had high, medium, and low academic abilities tended to have the creative qualifications as creative, medium, and less creative in sequence.

Abstract

This research aimed to publish the characteristics and to test the validity and the effectiveness of module based on REACT to improve students’ critical thinking skills on fungal material at grade X. The development of module based on REACT referred to nine modified steps of Research and Development (R&D) model from Borg & Gall that included: research and information collection, planning, development of initial design of product, initial field test, first product revision, limited field test, second product revision, operational field test, and final product revision. The data analysis used qualitative and quantitative descriptive method. The research results showed that the characteristics of module based on REACT were developed according to syntax of REACT model that was included by indicators of critical thinking; the validity of student module was assessed by material expert at 88.75%, by module presentation expert at 93.44%, by readability expert at 93.75%, and by learning device expert at 92.40% and for the validity of teacher module was assessed by material expert at 94.40%, by module presentation expert at 97.66%, by readability expert at 93.75%, and by learning device expert at 86.46%; scoring average at 98.69% by practitioner and at 81.88% by students; and module based on REACT on fungal material was effective to improve students’ critical thinking skills because there was difference of posttest results between module class and control class (Sig.=0.020 < a=0.05).
