Abstract

Understanding students' perceptions of socio-scientific issues (SSI), particularly in the context of biology, is essential for developing effective teaching strategies. This study analyzes students’ perceptions of SSI in biology, involving 360 participants from 10th- and 11th-grade classes at a high school in Majalengka, West Java, Indonesia. The participants, aged 16 to 17 years, were equally divided between the two grade levels. Data were collected using a 24-item survey questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale. The results show an overall mean perception score of 3.31, indicating that students generally hold a neutral perception of SSI in biology. A weak correlation was observed between students’ overall perceptions and SSI in biology, with a p-value of 0.08 and an r-value of 0.02. Further analysis revealed minor differences in perceptions based on grade level and gender, with 10th-grade students scoring an average of 3.30 and 11th-grade students scoring 3.32. Male students averaged 3.28, while female students averaged 3.34. These findings suggest that although students exhibit neutral perceptions of SSI in biology, many struggle to connect biological concepts to real-life contexts. This highlights the need for further research to identify factors influencing students’ perceptions and to explore alternative learning models for improving understanding and engagement with SSI in biology.

Abstract

Cognitive load can be measured, one of which is by emotions through facial expressions during learning. This research aims to develop learning media by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) that is able to detect the emotions of prospective teachers during genetics lectures. Using AI technology, the system can evaluate students' cognitive load in real-time through facial expression analysis. This learning media is equipped with emotion detection features, interactive learning materials, and an informative dashboard to monitor student learning progress. This research is a development research that refers to the Borg & Gall model. The data collection technique is in the form of questionnaires and questions integrated into AI media that detects student emotions, which are then analyzed using machine learning algorithms to identify the level of cognitive load during the lecture session. The results of the study showed that this learning medium was able to identify the emotional expression of each student in the genetics of mendelism with a percentage of 61.64% (surprised-happy) describing a moderately low-very low cognitive load, and 38.42% (sad-angry) describing a high cognitive load. So that with the acquisition of this data, it is known that more than 50% of students' emotional recordings (low cognitive load) can follow and understand the information obtained in the Mendelism genetics lecture. The application of this technology is expected to improve the quality of learning and help students achieve a better understanding of genetics courses.

Abstract

Science anxiety is a debilitating combination of anxious negative emotion and cognition in the context of science education. This study investigates the relationship between students' science anxiety and their academic performance in science learning at the junior high school level. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach with a survey-based research design, the study gathered data from 109 students aged 12 to 15 years old. The Science Anxiety was used to assess students' levels of anxiety across personal and environmental dimensions. The survey result shown that science anxiety scale scale among junior high school students is 2.31, which both of them considered as low category. The findings reveal a moderate, negative correlation (r = -0.509, p < 0.001) between students' science anxiety and their learning outcomes. This inverse relationship suggests that as students' science anxiety increases, their academic performance tends to decrease. Conversely, lower levels of science anxiety are associated with better learning outcomes. The results highlight the significant impact of psychological factors, particularly anxiety, on students' engagement and achievement in science education.  Based on the students’ answers to open-ended questions, they are feel comfortable when learning science at school because of kind and friendly teacher. On the other hand, students who feel anxious in learning science when they found difficulties to comprehend scientific formulas. The findings provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers to develop targeted interventions and strategies that foster a more positive and inclusive science learning experience for all students.

Abstract

Differentiated learning is one of the learning strategies that can be applied to the Kurikulum Merdeka. This approach is expected to maximize individual progress and create a more positive learning experience. This research aims to determine the profile of students' self-regulation and its relationship to the application of a differentiated learning approach. There were 135 research subjects obtained through a purposive sampling technique with the criteria being that students received learning using a differentiated approach to atomic material models. Data collection used research instruments adapted from the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) to measure students' self-regulation, as well as formative assessment scores to determine the scores resulting from the differentiated approach to atomic material models. Based on descriptive analysis and correlation tests using Pearson's product-moment correlation analysis techniques, the results showed that there was no significant positive relationship between the application of a differentiated approach to student self-regulation (p > 0.05 and r = 0.012). However, the self-regulation variable shows a score in the quite good category of 6.67% and the good category of 93.33%. This shows that students' self-regulation profiles tend to be at a good level.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in managing academic stress and its influence on well-being and conceptual understanding of the coordination system material. This study employs a mixed-methods embedded approach, involving pretests, posttests, and qualitative interviews. The population of this research is senior high school students in one public school in Ciamis Regency. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, in which two classes of grade XI students were chosen based on the consideration that their Biology lesson schedules were relatively similar and their average academic stress scores were nearly equal. These classes were then assigned as the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group underwent SEL intervention, while the control group followed the conventional learning process. Data collection techniques included academic stress questionnaires, conceptual understanding tests, and well-being interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using paired t-tests and independent t-tests, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic coding. The results revealed a significant decrease in academic stress (p < 0.05) and improvement in conceptual understanding in the experimental group. The qualitative findings highlighted enhanced well-being in terms of emotional regulation, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills. This study concludes that SEL can be an effective approach to reducing academic stress and fostering holistic development in high school students, and it is recommended for broader implementation in educational practices.
