Abstract

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is a plant that contains many benefits and has the potential to be a medicinal plant in treating various diseases. Mangosteen leaves contain flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids and terpenoids which are known to have antibacterial and antibiofilm properties. This anti-biofilm agent is an alternative treatment for diabetic wound infections where cases of antibiotic resistance have increased. One of the causes of resistance is the biofilm formed by infectious bacteria. This research is a type of laboratory experimental research which aims to determine the anti-biofilm activity of mangosteen leaf extract against biofilms formed by a collection of bacterial isolates from diabetic wounds. The antibiofilm activity test carried out consisted of a cell attachment prevention test, a biofilm formation inhibition test, and a biofilm destruction test using the crystal violet staining method using the tube method and measuring optical density values on a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The concentrations of mangosteen leaf extract used are 60%, 80% and 100% as well as control – and control +. The results of the antibiofilm test showed that mangosteen leaf extract had the best activity in inhibiting biofilm formation, preventing cell attachment, and destroying biofilm, respectively. The three most optimal activities were found at a concentration of 100%, with an inhibition percentage of 50.51%, prevention of 32.56%, and destruction of 5.63%.

Abstract

The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis poses a serious threat to global health, making the rational use of antibiotics a priority within Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) programs. This study aims to evaluate the patterns and quantity of antibiotic use among inpatient populations at Stella Maris Hospital Makassar using the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification, Defined Daily Dose (DDD), and Drug Utilization (DU) 90% methods. This research employed a retrospective descriptive observational design using medical record data of patients who received antibiotic therapy from October to December 2024. The analysis was conducted by calculating DDD per 100 patient-days and identifying antibiotics contributing to 90% of total use. The results showed eight types of antibiotics were utilized. The three antibiotics with the highest DDD/100 patient-days were Cefuroxime (13.43), Ceftriaxone (11.8), and Cefotiam (10), which, together with Moxifloxacin, were included in the DU 90% segment. The predominance of second-generation cephalosporins—particularly among diagnoses such as unspecified fever, bronchiectasis, typhoid, and bronchitis—indicates a tendency toward broad-spectrum empirical therapy in chronic pulmonary conditions such as COPD and bronchiectasis. In conclusion, antibiotic use at Stella Maris Hospital Makassar is dominated by the cephalosporin class, highlighting the need for ongoing evaluation and strengthened implementation of AMS programs to optimize antibiotic therapy, improve treatment effectiveness, and reduce the risk of increasing antimicrobial resistance at the hospital level.

Abstract

Hypertension is recognized as a clinical condition that may lead to various disease-related complications, including diabetes mellitus. Both conditions are commonly observed in the elderly population. Advancing age is associated with physiological changes, such as decreased vascular elasticity and reduced peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin. This study aimed to describe the pattern of antihypertensive drug utilization among elderly patients with diabetes mellitus at Prof. Dr. Hi. Aloei Saboe Regional General Hospital, Gorontalo City, in 2024. This study employed an observational design with a descriptive retrospective approach. Data were collected from the medical records of 30 patients with hypertension and comorbid diabetes mellitus who met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that the majority of patients were female (90%), with the highest proportion observed in the 60–63 years age group (56.6%). Based on the analysis of antihypertensive drug classes, calcium channel blockers (CCBs) were the most frequently prescribed, with amlodipine accounting for 56% of prescriptions. Furthermore, in combination therapy involving antihypertensive and antidiabetic agents, the most commonly prescribed regimen was amlodipine combined with Sansulin Log-G (38%).

Abstract

Hydrogel is a hydrophilic material that can absorb and retain large amounts of water through the formation of hydrogen bonds between polymer functional groups to form a stable three-dimensional network. The physicochemical characteristics of hydrogels are greatly influenced by the cross-linking process that determines the network density and stability of the preparation. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the concentration of tannic acid as a chemical crosslinker on the physicochemical characteristics of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-chitosan-based hydrogels. Hydrogels were formulated with varying concentrations of tannic acid of 1%, 3%, and 5%, then evaluated including organoleptic tests, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, swelling index, irritation test, and characterization using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The results showed that increasing the concentration of tannic acid caused the formation of a denser hydrogel network, which was characterized by a decrease in the swelling index value and an increase in adhesion and changes in viscosity. The pH values of all formulas were within the physiological pH range of the skin. Irritation tests on 20 panelists showed that all formulas did not cause irritation reactions. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of molecular interactions between PVA, chitosan, and tannic acid through hydrogen bond formation. Overall, variations in the concentration of tannic acid as a chemical crosslinker affected the physicochemical characteristics of the PVA–chitosan hydrogel and resulted in stable preparations with good quality

Abstract

A laceration (vulnus scissum) is characterized by straight, regular wound edges, typically resulting from sharp object trauma. Ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) contain bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, saponins, tannins, sterols, alkaloids, and terpenoids, which possess anti-inflammatory properties and the potential to accelerate wound recovery. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an extract cream derived from T. catappa leaves on laceration healing in mice (Mus musculus). The extract was obtained via maceration using 70% ethanol, followed by phytochemical screening. The cream base was optimized to meet pharmaceutical standards, with evaluations encompassing organoleptic properties, pH, dispersibility, adhesion, viscosity, and freeze-thaw stability. Three formulations were developed with varying extract concentrations: F1 (15%), F2 (20%), and F3 (25%). The in vivo efficacy test involved five groups of mice. Results indicated that all three formulations met the criteria for physical stability. In terms of healing duration, the negative control group required 21 days, while the positive control group achieved healing in 10 days. Among the treatment groups, F1 (15%) and F2 (20%) showed healing times of 18 and 16 days, respectively. Notably, F3 (25%) exhibited the highest efficacy with a healing time of 10 days, comparable to the positive control. Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA confirmed these findings with a p-value < 0.05.
