Abstract

[English]: Convergent sequences pose a challenge for students to comprehend in real analysis courses. Problem-solving based learning can serve as an alternative approach for imparting the understanding of convergent sequences. The objective of this research is to provide a description of the activities undertaken by students when solving problems related to convergent sequences, focusing on specific characteristics of their problem-solving approaches. This study used a qualitative methodology, namely a case study design, with a sample size of 14 participants who were recruited using purposive sampling. The collection of data was conducted via tests and interviews. The findings of this study indicate that the participants can be classified into dominant representation groups and non-dominant representation groups. The subjects who are verbally dominant tend to express ideas using precise language, possess the ability to elaborate on concepts, and demonstrate logical reasoning and argumentation skills. The subjects who are visually dominant tend to analyze or convert visual representations throughout the process of problem-solving. Meanwhile, those who are symbolically dominant tend to approach problem-solving by breaking down the difficulties into multiple solution phases that are conceptually organized. The subjects who are not dominant in a certain type of representation show flexibility in understanding the problem by using a variety of representations that are appropriate for their situation and level of knowledge. The results of this study can serve as a guide for constructing educational approaches, taking into account the characteristics of students when solving problems related to convergent sequences.

Abstract

Geometry can be challenging for students due to its abstract nature; The difficulty is often associated with low spatial abilities; to overcome these challenges, educators can employ dynamic and visual learning approaches to help students learn and understand geometric concepts more effectively. This study aimed to develop a Geo Math application by integrating the GeoGebra applets on geometry that fulfill valid, practical, and effective aspects that are expected to improve spatial abilities. This research utilized development research using the ADDIE model, which consists of 5 stages: analysis, design, development, and trial implementation. It went through several trial stages consisting of validation experts, one-to-one trials, and small group trials, and the evaluation stage was carried out through a pre-post-test quasi-experimental study. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the Geo Math application was very feasible to support the implementation of learning mathematics, especially in learning geometric transformations, which could assist students in constructing concepts from various transformations effectively. The interactive and dynamic nature of GeoGebra applets within the application allowed students to visualize and manipulate geometric objects and could make abstract mathematical concepts more concrete and accessible, which could improve students’ spatial abilities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the problem-solving profiles of eighth-grade students in the fraction material at SMPN Model Terpadu Madani, based on adversity quotient. The subjects of this study consist of 3 students selected based on the results of the ARP questionnaire and the recommendation of the mathematics teacher. The results of this study show that: (1) The problem-solving profile of students in the climber category can understand the problem by stating what is unknown and what data is given. However, they are less complete in writing down the known data from the problem, designing a well-structured solution plan, carrying out the plan as initially created, answering correctly, and checking their answer using a different method. (2) The problem-solving profile of students in the camper category can understand the problem by determining what is unknown and identifying the given data, designing a good and complete solution plan, carrying out the plan as initially made, and answering correctly, but they do not check their answer afterward. (3) The problem-solving profile of students in the quitter category can understand the problem by stating what is unknown and what data is given. However, they are less complete in writing down the known data from the problem, designing a good and complete solution plan, failing to implement the plan as initially made, not answering correctly, and not checking their answer afterward. In conclusion, there are 3 categories of students that require different treatment and attention from the teacher. Climber students need more attention in writing down the known data and checking their answer using a different method. Camper students need to be encouraged to check their answer after completing the problem, and quitter students require more intensive guidance in understanding the problem and carrying out the solution plan correctly.
