Abstract

AbstractEverybody experiences stress at one point or another in their lives, just at different levels and for different reasons. It is inevitable. And, writing a thesis is one of the most stressful moments in a student life, especially when the student is in the last semester before being dropped out. As XY's case in this present study. This study aimed to investigate what were the stressors that she encountered that made her late in finishing her thesis and how she coped with the situation. The researcher used case study as the method and observation, semi-structured interview, Gadzella?s SII Questionnaire, and Lazarus and Folkman?s Ways of Coping Questionnaire to gather the data. The result shows that the stressors that caused XY were family and personal problems, academic-related problem, and other minor problems such as the lack of material sources and finance. She coped with her stress in the ways of distancing, detaching, distracting herself from the stress sources, confining her problems to her close-ones and keeping her motivation high.Keywords: Academic Stress, Academic Stressors, Higher Batch Student, Stress-Coping Strategy

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted to design a teaching material needed by the teacher and students in reading on descriptive text to supportCTLApproach. The material is called Poventure which is the abbreviation of Pontianak Adventure. The research was conducted atSMPNegeri 11 Pontianak with the eighth grade students in academic year 2016/2017 and their English teacher as the participants. The research applied R&D with three phases of development called ADDIE. From the need analysis, it was found that the students need interesting supplementary material to improve their reading comprehension on descriptive text. The research focused on creating the material to fit in the needs. In the research, the design of Poventure covered the concept of the product, while the development of Poventure described the contents and approach included in the product. To validate the product, an expert validation is used with the result of 3.75. This result meant that Poventure is a very good supplementary teaching material for teaching reading on descriptive text to support Contextual Teaching and Learning for grade eighth students at SMPN 11 Pontianak in academic year 2016/2017. Keywords: Poventure, Descriptive Text, Reading, CTl, Development Research

Abstract

Absract: This research was conducted to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Sintang in academic year 2015/2016. The aim of this research was to find out how well the use of Project-based learning in improving students? speaking skill. In conducting this research, the writer used Classroom Action Research as the method of research. The writer observed the improvement of students? speaking skill by collecting the data through observation and measurement technique. This research was implemented to 36 eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Sintang. The findings of this research showed that there was an improvement on students? speaking skill through project-based learning particularly in accuracy and fluency. In the first cycle, the students? mean score was 74.44. In the second cycle, the students? mean score was 78.06. Students? score in third cycle was 81.04. It can be concluded that the students? speaking skill taught using project-based learning was improved. Key words: Project-Based Learning, Speaking, Classroom Action Research   Abstrak: Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap siswa SMA Negeri 3 Sintang tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat seberapa besar pengaruh project-based learning dalam meningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini, penulis melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas dengan menggunakan metode project-based learning yang diterapkan pada siswa. Penulis mengamati peningkatan siswa melalui teknik measurement dan observasi. Hasil dari peneliitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pada kemampuan berbicara siswa. Respon siswa menunjukkan bahwa mereka tertarik untuk belajar berbicara melalui project-based learning. Pada siklus pertama, skor rata-rata siswa adalah 74,44. Pada siklus kedua, skor rata-rata siswa adalah 78,06. Pada siklus ketiga, skor siswa meningkat menjadi 81,04. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa keterampilan berbicara siswa diajarkan menggunakan project-based learning ditingkatkan.   Kata Kunci: project-based learning, speaking, penelitian tindakan kelas

Abstract

Abstract: This research investigated the effectiveness of using anime entitled ?Bakuman? in teaching writing narrative text to year-11 students of SMAN 4 Pontianak in academic year 2015/2016. It was a pre-experimental research which the sample was XI MIA 1. The technique of collecting data was measurement technique. The instruments to collect data were essay tests which were divided into pre-test and post-test. Both pre-test and post-test measured the students? ability in writing narrative text. Pre-test was administered before the treatment. Meanwhile, post-test was administered after the treatment. The data showed that the mean score of pre-test was 78.88 and post-test was 82.38. The interval between the mean score of pre-test and post-test was 3.5. Based on the data analysis, the effect size was 0.44. It was categorized as ?modest effect?. Thus, the researcher concluded that the use of anime entitled ?Bakuman? was effective in teaching writing narrative text. Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah penelitian eksperimental dengan sampel XI MIA 1. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik pengukuran. Alat-alat pengumpulan data berupa tes esai yang dibagi menjadi pre-tes dan post-tes. Keduanya mengukur kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks naratif. Pre-tes diberikan sebelum melakukan perlakuan. Sementara, post-tes diberikan setelah perlakuan. Data menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata pre-tes adalah 78,88 dan post-tes adalah 82.38. Interval antara nila rata-rata pre-tes dan post-tes adalah 3,5. Berdasarkan analisis data, ukuran efek adalah 0.44 dikategorikan sebagai ?efek sedang?. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan anime berjudul ?Bakuman? efektif dalam mengajar menulis teks naratif. Kata kunci: Menulis, Teks Naratif, Anime, Bakuman

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to improve students comprehending on commands given. The method of this research is collaborative classroom action research.. The instruments used to collect the data are field note and individual test checklist form. The research finding of 1st cycle has shown that lack of understanding of the students in comprehending the commands is the main reason of this problem. However, the situation changes in 2nd cycle when the teacher keep repeating the commands and showing actions used as the technique to clarify the meaning of the commands which is called Total Physical Response combine with repetition drill. TPR combine with repetition drill improve students to comprehend the commands so that they will be easier to carry out the command given. In addition, the students will be more motivated to learn more due to the TPR isan  attractive technique for students. Keywords : Total Physical Response, Repetition drill, Commands, Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research was to find out how does reciprocal teaching technique improve student’s reading comprehension of recount text. A classroom action research it was conducted in 3 cycles, each of which consisted of four stages of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subject of research was XI-IPS 1 students of SMAS Mujahidin Pontianak in Academic Year 2018/2019. Observation and measurement technique were used as the technique of data collecting. Observation checklist, field notes, and reading comprehension test were used as the tools of data collecting. Reciprocal teaching technique could improve student’s reading comprehension through predicting, questioning clarifying, and summarizing. In predicting, the students could understand the content of passage about what will happen next in the text. In constructing the questions, the students could use 5W1H formula to help them creating the questions. Through clarifying, the students clarified their understanding of the text by identifying the linguistics feature of recount text. Through summarizing, the students summarized the text using their own language. The data from reading comprehension test showed that students reading comprehension improved from cycle to cycle. The student’s mean score improved from 45.67 and then improved to 60.51 and up to 81.60.  Key words: Classroom Action Research, Reading Comprehension, Recount                                 Texts, Reciprocal Teaching Technique

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to investigate the most dominant internal and external factor influencing students’ low English learning achievement. To achieve the purpose of this study, a descriptive research was conducted at SMKN 2 Pontianak with the sample of this study was the eleventh grade students of XI TSM class in Academic Year 2015/2016 which was chosen by using purposive sampling technique. The findings of this research revealed that (1) Negative attitude was found to be the most dominant internal factor influencing students’ low English learning achievement with the percentage was 78,86% and classified as strong influence. (2) Of the two external factor, unsupportive school environment was found to be the most dominant one with the percentage was 62,38% and also classified as strong influence and followed by lack of family support with the percentage was 40,12% which was classified as weak. To conclude, negative attitude which was supported negatively by the unsupportive school environment had a strong negative influence to the teaching learning process which consequently resulted in students’ low achievement.   Keywords : Internal Factors, External Factors, Low Achievement   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor internal dan eksternal yang paling dominan dalam mempengaruhi rendahnya hasil belajar siswa pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian ini, sebuah penelitian deskriptif dilakukan di SMKN 2 Pontianak dengan subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas XI TSM pada Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Hasil dari penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa (1)Sikap negatif merupakan faktor internal yang paling dominan dalam mempengaruhi rendahnya hasil belajar siswa pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan persentase sebesar 78,86% dan digolongkan sebagai pengaruh yang kuat. (2) Dari dua eksternal faktor, lingkungan sekolah yang tidak mendukung merupakan faktor eksternal yang paling dominan dengan persentase sebesar 63,38% dan juga digolongkan sebagai pengaruh kuat dan diikuti oleh kurangnya dukungan dari keluarga dengan persentase sebesar 40,12% yang digolongkan sebagai pengaruh lemah. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa sikap negatif yang didukung oleh lingkungan sekolah yang tidak mendukung memiliki pengaruh negatif yang kuat pada proses belajar mengajar yang berakibat pada rendahnya hasil belajar siswa.   Kata Kunci: Faktor Internal, Faktor Eksternal, Rendahnya Hasil Belajar

Abstract

Abstract: Motivation has important role in listening skills because it gives impulse to the students more independent to gain their goal. This research deals with the relationship between motivation and listening skills. The purpose of this research is to examine the students’ motivation and whether it is in correlation with their listening skills. This research involved 31 members of the third semester students of English Education Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Tanjungpura. This study was conducted in correlational research. The result of the study showed that they had different motivation towards listening skills. The finding of the research revealed that there was relationship between motivation and listening skills. The calculation of Pearson Product Moment showed that r value between variable X (motivation) and Y (listening skills) was 0.73 with the degree of freedom were 29. Based on table of r size of coefficient, it was in interval    0.66 – 0.85 that means there was strong correlation between variable X and variable Y. Keywords: Motivation, Listening Skills, Impulse Abstrak: Motivasi mempunyai peran yang penting dalam keterampilan mendengar karena dianggap dapat memberikan dorongan kepada mahasiswa – mahasiswa untuk lebih mandiri dalam pencapaian tujuan mereka. Penelitian ini berhubungan dengan korelasi antara motivasi dan keterampilan mendengar. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji motivasi mahasiswa – mahasiswa dan apakah ada hubungannya dengan keterampilan mendengarkan. Penelitian ini melibatkan 31 mahasiswa semester 3 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Tanjungpura. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian korelasi. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa mereka memiliki motivasi yang berbeda terhadap keterampilan mendengar. Hasil penelitian membuktikan adanya hubungan antara motivasi dan keterampilan mendengar. Perhitungan dari uji Korelasi Pearson menunjukkan nilai r antara variable X (motivasi) dan Y (keterampilan mendengarkan) sebesar 0.73 dengan derajat- derajat kebebasan sebesar 29. Berdasarkan table nilai r pada Uji Korasi Pearson, nilai ini berada di interval 0.66 – 0.85 yang menunjukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi yang kuat antara variable X dan Y. Abstract

Abstract: This research investigated students’ negative emotion during English for Foreign Language (EFL) class. The negative emotions that became the focus of this research were anxiety, boredom, hopelessness, and anger. To achieve the objectives, the writer used case study method. There were three procedures of this research namely classroom observation, Likert questionnaire, and students interview. The participants of this study were 20 students who were considered problematic in the EFL class, and sample was 10 chosen by purposive sampling technique. The finding showed that all students had negative emotions during the EFL learning process. The order of the negative emotions were anxiety (97 cases), hopelessness (73 cases), anger (55 cases), and boredom (39 cases). The factors stimulating those negative emotions came from students’ English ability, English materials’ difficulty level, presentation of English materials, and the students’ relationship with their peers and English teacher. It was also found that the negative emotions gave impact to students’ performance like passive behavior, less concentrated, less motivated and lack of confidence. Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui emosi negatif siswa selama kelas.Bahasa Inggris untuk Bahasa Asing (EFL). Emosi negatif yang menjadi fokus penelitian ini adalah kecemasan, kebosanan, keputusasaan, dan kemarahan. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian, peneliti menggunakan metode studi kasus. Ada tiga prosedur penelitian yang digunakan yaitu observasi kelas, Likert kuesioner, dan wawancara siswa. Peserta penelitian ini adalah siswa yang dianggap bermasalah di kelas EFL, 10 orang sampel dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa semua siswa memiliki emos yaitu kecemasan (97 kasus), keputusasaan (73 kasus), kemarahan (55 kasus), dan kebosanan (39 kasus). Faktor-faktor yang menstimulus emosi negatif tersebut diantaranya kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa, tingkat kesulitan materi bahasa Inggris, penyajian materi bahasa Inggris , dan kondisi hubungan siswa dengan rekan-rekan dan guru bahasa Inggrisnya. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa emosi negatif siswa memberikan dampak terhadap kinerja seperti perilaku yang pasif, kurang konsentrasi, kurang termotivasi dan kurang percaya diri selama proses pembelajaran.   Kata Kunci: Emosi Negatif, Proses Belajar EFL, Kecemasan, Kemarahan, Kebosanan, Keputusasaan.

Abstract

Abstract: This research focuses on designing task-based instructional strategy on recycling newspaper to improve students’ in reading procedure text of SMAN 2 Sungai Raya Kabupaten Kubu Raya in Academic Year 2013/2014. The aim of this research is to construct teaching and learning strategy on recycling newspaper to improve students’ ability in reading procedure text for SMAN 2 Sungai Raya students. The research method used in this research is development research. The process in this research used analysis, design and development. The participants in this research are students and English teachers at SMAN 2 Sungai Raya. The researcher uses observation and interview as the tools of data collecting. Based on observation the researcher formulate the goals and learning objective. The interview findings the difficulties in teaching procedure text and effectiveness of the text book or LKS. Needs analysis obtains the following information about the goals, students’ experience, and identify the probable causes for a performance gap. The design phase explains relationship between approach and design be present a construct. The development phase represents activities and procedures planned for student’s activities. Keywords: Procedure Text, Newspaper, Development Research Abstrak: Penelitian ini berfokus pada merancang tugas berbasis perintah dengan menggunakan koran bekas untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam membaca teks prosedure pada SMAN 2 Sungai Raya Kabupaten Kubu Raya tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk membangun gagasan strategi dalam belajar dan mengajar menggunakan koran bekas untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam membaca teks prosedure pada siswa SMAN 2 Sungai Raya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian pengembangan. Proses dalam penelitian ini menggunakan analisis, rancangan dan pengembangan. Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan siswa-siswa dan guru bahasa inggris di SMAN 2 Sungai Raya. Peneliti menggunakan pengamatan dan wawancara sebagai alat pengumpulan data. Berdasarkan pengamatan peneliti dapat merumuskan sasaran dan tujuan pembelajaran. Dalam wawancara menemukan kesulitan mengajar teks prosedure dan keefektipan buku atau lembar kerja siswa. Analisis terkait dengan informasi tentang sasaran, pengalaman siswa, dan masalah yang dihadapi. Tahap rancangan menjelaskan hubungan antara rancangan dan metode untuk menjadi gagasan. Pengembangan menjelaskan aktivitas-aktivitas dan tata cara merancang kegiatan siswa. Kata kunci: Teks prosedure, Koran, Penelitian Pengembangan
