Abstract

The novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is written by Khalid Hosseini, an Afghan American writer, about the lives of Afghans in Afghanistan. Considering the novel as a social semiotic, this paper intends to analyze the politeness strategies used by the two main characters: Mariam, the female protagonist, and Rasheed the male antagonist to conclude whether the female character is more polite or the male character. This paper is qualitative research, and it uses the theoretical framework of Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson. The result of the paper indicates that both the characters used bald on record dominantly followed by positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record; also, the result indicates that women are more polite than men in the novel. It is because the female character used more off record and negative politeness than the male character. This paper adds to our knowledge of how the female and male characters are portrayed in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, and it also suggests that future researchers conduct ethnographic research to conclude about the politeness of the male and female in Afghan Society itself.

The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. 25 children’s stories at level 4 on Storyweaver are selected as research location. Motivational expressions are identified by five types of motivations and the translation quality is assessed by accuracy, acceptability, and readability aspects. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with three experts is conducted to assess the accuracy and acceptability. The readability is assessed by children who fulfil target reader’s criteria. The result of this study shows; 1) Identified is the most type of motivation found in the stories; 2) Translation of motivational expressions in children’s stories is mostly at a high level of accuracy, acceptability and readability. Nevertheless, there are some data that have medium or low quality because it is translated with unsuitable translation techniques and some data have medium and low readability because the used of unfamiliar terms.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Apraisal, Apresiasi, Brosur Pariwisata Bilingual, Semiotika AbstractAs a text, tourist brochure possesses linguistic and visual information. Abstract

Jorinda & Jorindel is one of the horror tales rewritten by Brother Grimms. Jorinda & Jorindel as the protagonists in this story faced a catastrophe caused by supra-natural terror and kidnapping committed by The Evil Witch. In realizing such narration, language plays a significant role to depict the characters’ feelings or emotional state that gives the text mood. Such language is technically perceived as the affect. It is one of the attitude domains under the theory of appraisal. By applying appraisal framework (J. R. Martin & Rose, 2003) as the development of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, this descriptive qualitative study attempts to describe affect prosody in the tale of Jorinda and Jorindel. The study found that in the orientation the story is full with the good vibe linguistically represented by positive effect felt by the protagonist. It then changes radically into negative affect (antipathy, unhappiness, and insecurity) as well as the antagonist (antipathy), It then begins to return to equilibrium represented by the positive affect in the evaluation (happiness and security). It continues in the resolution where the positive affect (happiness) fulfills the protagonists’ hearts but not with the antagonists’. It is because her evil life has been over. The findings imply that the affect resonates from the positive to negative and returns to positive

Abstract

This research examines the two factors which effect on the raising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. It aimed at delineating the potential effect of these two factors on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference of undergraduate students majoring in English department of State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung and PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. 213 Javanese undergraduate students were selected based on two-step purposive sampling. To collect data, the researcher used observation and questionares in which the participants answered a set of 12 open-ended questions to measure the students’ term along with educational institution and Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. To analyze the data, t-test on correlation and coefficient as well as linier stepwise multiple regressions were conducted through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Data analysis indicated that the independent variables significantly correlated with Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. In addition, multiple regressions analysis specified different higher institution as the main contributing variable and students’ term as the second one on the arising of Indonesian interference. It also showed that students of English departments of state Islamic institution of Tulungagung got higher scores on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference than those of PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. The reason may refer to the supporting environment that is higher language exposure. The results highlighted the longer the students’ term they have, the lower score on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference they produce.

Abstract

This study targets a holistic investigation of the types, strategies, and functions carried out by the characters in the 2016 film Uang Panai Maha(R)L and its social context. This study also aims to find the influence of the stages of the film starting from orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution on the use of types, strategies, and functions of requests carried out by the characters in the film. This study uses a socio-pragmatic approach to investigate speech acts of requests based on Anna Trosborg's theory (1995) to identify types, strategies, and functions in films. This study is supported by using descriptive qualitative research supported by four main stages of analysis by the Santosa (2021) model, combined with Spradley (1980), and Miles and Huberman (1996) starting from domain analysis, taxonomy, components, and cultural themes. The data for this study were taken from dialogues containing the types, strategies, and functions of requests carried out by the characters at each stage of the film. The data source comes from the 2016 film Uang Panai Maha(R)L stages starting from orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution. The study results indicate that the speech acts of requests uttered by the characters in the film Uang Panai Maha(R)L 2016 tend to fluctuate throughout the stages of the film, namely orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution.

Abstract

Background: Children’s literature, particularly bible stories, plays a crucial role in shaping children’s moral values. However, translation quality in children’s bible stories is often overlooked, impacting accuracy and acceptability. This study examines the translation techniques used in Classic Children’s Bible, assessing their influence on translation quality, particularly accuracy and acceptability.Methodology: This descriptive qualitative study is product-oriented research which was focused on 43 children’s Bible stories. Data were collected from Classic Children’s Bible and its Indonesian translation. They were analyzed through content analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis.Findings: The study found that some techniques influence translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The mostly used techniques (established equivalence, transposition, and modulation) contribute to accuracy and acceptability. In addition, it also found the translator’s effort in maintaining the original story through correction technique. However, accuracy and acceptability are considered to gain a nearly perfect score because of several techniques (discursive creation and deletion). Conclusion: This study confirms the crucial role of translation techniques in ensuring accuracy and acceptability in children’s Bible story translations. Translation techniques such as established equivalence, transposition, and modulation were effective while discursive creation, deletion, and reduction reduced accuracy.Originality: The translation of children’s Bible stories has been studied primarily in terms of methods, techniques, and quality. Howeverseveral studies examined some linguistic parts, not the whole story. In filling the gap, this study investigated the translation techniques in 43 children’s Bible story translations as the whole story.
