Abstract

Oral folklore tradition is a unique phenomenon in West Borneo. This study aims to gain the lecturer's perspectives and reflection toward its implementation as a project-based activity for encouraging university students to transform local folklore into texts in English. It combines Finnegan's instructional procedure, and Gordon's synectic model and the creative state, which has been defined as creative instruction. Multiple observations and an in-depth interview with the folklore lecturer were conducted for this qualitative investigation. The lecturer is recognized as being exceptionally representative of this study employing purposive sampling under lived experience study because of his proficiency and enthusiasm. Having this creative instruction under supervision makes it clear that there is more room for the student's imagination and creativity to grow throughout this project-based activity. It gives them freedom to freely pursue their interests. Without excluding the possibilities of use in areas where there is still local folklore, this creative instruction is specifically suited for regions that are still rich in oral tradition. Further research is essential, nevertheless, as this study does not go into great detail on the perspectives and involvement among various students, the diversity of cultures and geographies, or the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI).

Abstract

Within thirteenth-century Javanese tradition in Southeast Asia, women are frequently marginalized. Women who had significant influence were often omitted from historical records, such as Ken Dedes. Her tale is exclusively documented in the book of Pararaton. Dedes is seen as a significant woman who bore the ruling dynasty in Java. Modern Indonesian literature depict Dedes in different ways, offering varied interpretations of her character. This study seeks to analyze the intersectional identity of Ken Dedes in the novel Tutur Dedes: Doa & Kutukan by Amalia Yunus (2022) because of the intricate nature of her identity. The data consist of narrative elements such as tale sequences, characters, settings, themes, and other literary devices sourced from data repositories relevant to the research issue. The data were collected using reading and note-taking methods. Additionally, it was qualitatively analyzed via the lens of Kimberle Crenshaw's (1989) intersectionality approach. The results indicate that Dedes is shaped by various intersecting identities: education for an educated identity, biological physique for beauty and sexuality, high social status for respectability and knowledge access, religion for personal integrity, gender for the role of a mother, and political position for influence and network power. Each component category interacts to shape, reinforce, and internalize Dedes' identity and self as an educated woman in the thirteenth century, who wields significant influence and can overcome the oppression she faces. This study emphasises the importance of viewing women's identities as a cohesive whole rather than in fragmented elements. Javanese women were well educated and engaged in many facets of society in the thirteenth century.

Abstract

Abstract

Madihin is a traditional Banjarese oral performance art that combines rhythmic improvisation, poetic verses, humor, and the beating of the tarbang (frame drum). More than mere entertainment, Madihin historically functioned as a medium of advice, social commentary, and community bonding. However, in the context of modernization and globalization, both its functions and modes of presentation have been reshaped. This study aims to analyze the continuity and transformation of Madihin by focusing on its changing functions, performance forms, and cultural significance in contemporary society. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews with prominent pamadihinan (performers), field observations, and documentation analysis. The findings reveal that Madihin has shifted from its traditional role as a vehicle of moral counsel and communal entertainment to a more diverse medium encompassing education, tourism promotion, and even political communication. Performance innovations such as Madihin hip-hop and Madihin dangdutillustrate how this oral tradition adapts to popular cultural trends while preserving its improvisational core and symbolic values. At the same time, the challenges of regeneration among younger generations highlight the fragile continuity of this art. This research demonstrates that the sustainability of Madihin relies on its capacity for innovation without losing its cultural identity, offering broader insight into how oral performance traditions negotiate relevance, identity, and authenticity in the face of social and cultural change.

Abstract

Madihin is a traditional Banjar oral art form that conveys moral, religious, and cultural values through poetry and humor. However, globalization and digitalization have challenged its continuity, especially among younger generations. This study investigates how Madihin is being revitalized through digital platforms and its function as a medium for cultural and character education in South Kalimantan. Using a qualitative approach with a digital ethnography framework, the study collected data through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and analysis of online Madihin content on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Participants included Madihin practitioners, educators, students, and cultural stakeholders. Findings reveal that digital media has expanded the reach of Madihin, increased youth engagement, and fostered creative innovations. Madihin supports character education by embedding values such as honesty, respect, and social responsibility into engaging performances. It also promotes digital literacy by encouraging ethical media use and critical thinking. However, challenges such as content commodification, authenticity loss, and digital inequality persist. Madihin’s revitalization in the digital era highlights the adaptive potential of traditional arts in contemporary education. To ensure sustainability, collaboration among schools, communities, and government bodies is essential. When aligned with educational goals and cultural identity, Madihin can function as both an instructional tool and a medium for cultural preservation.

Abstract

The shifting meaning of Javanese culture is a central theme in Tunggono's Nuswantara trilogy. This topic is important to explore, as the social criticism embedded in these fictional works warrants careful analysis. This descriptive qualitative research aims to explain the role of Javanese locality as a critique of sociocultural dynamics in the trilogy. Swingewood's sociology of literature and van Peursen's theory of cultural dynamics are applied as analytical frameworks. The researcher serves as a human instrument, gathering data through heuristic reading, hermeneutic interpretation, and note-taking. The data are processed using content analysis, which includes condensation, display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The findings indicate that the Javanese cultural dynamics in the trilogy can be categorized into three domains. First, mystical thought encompasses Hindu–Kejawen practices associated with shamans, the controversial jamasan keris ritual, offerings (sajen) and incense (dupa) to summon spirits (dedemit), mystical gamelan, and the perception of spiritual knowledge as identical with supernatural science. Second, ontological thought presents social critiques that challenge mystical traditions, contending that such beliefs do not correspond to the authentic essence of Javanese locality. Third, functional thought highlights critiques that link cultural practices to their societal and practical functions, underscoring the adaptability of Javanese culture within contemporary contexts. Tunggono’s cross-cultural engagement contributes to revitalizing discourse on Javanese cultural dynamics in literature, carried out with a strong sense of intellectual responsibility. The research affirms that Javanese culture remains open to interpretation, reflection, and critical inquiry, offering rich possibilities for ongoing scholarly examination of its evolving significance.
