Abstract

Homosexuality is a significant topic in many social discussions. Most people believe in the right for individuals to live as they are and appreciate everyone's uniqueness. However, there are also those with differing opinions who do not support this right. Islamic boarding school serves as one of the pillars of preserving Islamic teachings and protecting the young generation from moral decadence. Ironically, it is often viewed as one of the places where sexual perversion, i.e., homosexuality, grows. This study aimed to present a preventive intervention to prevent sexual perversion through capacity building for the management, head, and teachers in the Islamic boarding school environment. To this end, the action research was conducted in one of the Islamic seminaries in Magelang Regency, Indonesia. The study subjects were the Islamic boarding school's manager, caretakers, and teachers. Data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, observation, focus group discussion (FGD),  and document study. This study found that (1) the indication of homosexual perversion in the Islamic boarding school was categorized as low; (2) the intervention could improve managers’, caretakers’, and teachers’ knowledge about the indication of homosexual perversion, reproductive education strategies for students, and sensitivity towards homosexual perversion in the Islamic boarding school; and (3) it is necessary to reconstruct the regulation and prepare counseling service units. To prevent homosexuality at Islamic boarding schools (IBS), there's a need for a systematic, integrated, comprehensive, and wise preventive effort involving managers, caretakers, and teachers. This includes increasing their knowledge and awareness about various topics such as: 1) Sexual behavior issues at IBS and their underlying causes; 2) Adolescents' development characteristics; 3) Adolescent reproductive health; 4) Sexually transmitted diseases and their causes; 5) Sexual deviations and their consequences; 6) Future planning. Additionally, efforts should involve reconstructing IBS regulations and preparing counseling service units. The suggestion from this research is to adapt these interventions to similar educational institutions in a thoughtful manner.

Abstract

Adolescents often labeled as the “strawberry generation” tend to show low self-acceptance and harsh self-criticism, conditions that are closely related to low self-compassion. This study examined the effectiveness of REBT-based group counseling with journaling in enhancing adolescents’ self-compassion. A quantitative quasi-experimental design was employed using a pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group. Participants were 10 tenth- and eleventh-grade students from a senior high school in Central Java, selected through purposive sampling and assigned to an experimental group (N = 5) and a control group (N = 5). Self-compassion was measured using a self-report scale administered before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using an independent samples t-test. The results showed a significance value of .013 (p < .05), indicating a significant difference in gain scores between the experimental and control groups. The experimental group obtained a mean gain score of 18.4, whereas the control group obtained −1.0, demonstrating that REBT-based group counseling with journaling is effective in improving adolescents’ self-compassion. This study is limited by its small sample size, brief intervention period, and restricted monitoring of changes outside counseling sessions, which may affect the generalizability and stability of the findings. Future research should involve larger samples, longer interventions, and more varied monitoring tools to further optimize and evaluate journaling-based group counseling for adolescent self-compassion.

Abstract

In general, the particular research and development aimed to produce modules for students and guidebook modules for counselor which is acceptable both theoretically and practically. The acceptability is assessed in the terms of format or design, as well as the material content and practice. The developmental procedures adapted from Borg and Gall model, namely: (1) stage I preliminary study and planning, (2) stage II product development, (3) stage III product trial, (4) stage IV product revision, and (5) final product. The product was a Self-Assessment Training Module as a Career Stage Planning of Students in Senior High School and its guidebook. The results of product trials showed that the developed product had a “very good” acceptability score. In conclusion, the product is accepted both theoretically and practically. The acceptability of the product give implications that the using of Self-Assessment Training Module can help the students to recognize, assess, and understand themselves, and then they can plan their careers appropriately. The module can help the school counselor to guide students in self-assessment as the initial stage of career planning.
