Abstract

This study evaluated the impact of adding onion (Allium cepa L.), shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.), and garlic (Allium sativum L.) peels as additives to the broiler production. The material used was 189 one-day-old commercial broiler chicken Lohmann strain (unsexing) and assigned to nine treatments and three replications: T0(-): basal diet, T0(+): basal diet + antibiotic (zinc bacitracin 0.1%), T1: basal diet + 0.5% garlic peel, T2: basal diet + 0.5% shallot peel, T3: basal diet + 0.5% onion peel, T4: basal diet + 0.25% garlic peel and 0.25% shallot peel, T5: basal diet + 0.25%. garlic peel + 0.25% onion peel, T6: basal diet + 0.25% shallot peel + 0.25% onion peel, T7: basal diet + 0.167% garlic peel + 0.167% shallot peel + 0.167% onion peel. Feed intake, final body weight, feed conversion ratio (FCR), mortality, productivity index, and income over feed cost were the variables that were observed in the current study. The data were analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results of the study show that the addition of the three garlic powders do not give any effect (P>0.05) on feed intake, final body weight, FCR, mortality, production index and IOFC. The conclusions of this study showed that garlic peel, shallot peel, and onion peel could be used as feed additive. This choice yields positive effects on production performance, particularly in terms of Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) and the production index.

Abstract

Feed is the most important factor in broiler farming to achieve optimal productivity, because feed costs reach 60-70% of the total production costs, therefore the quantity and quality of feed need to be considered. Efforts that can be made to increase feed efficiency and reduce production costs in broiler farming businesses are by adding feed additives. This study aims to evaluate the effect of adding shallot peel flour as a feed additive on antibacterial activity and characteristics of broiler intestines. The method used in this study is a laboratory analysis method and a field experimental method designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 treatments and 5 replications. The results showed that the treatment of adding red shallot peel flour as a feed additive gave a very significant difference (P <0.01) on the pH, viscosity, length of villi and surface area of the villi of the small intestine of broiler, but gave no significant difference (P>0.05) on the number of villi and depth of the crypts of the small intestine of broiler. The conclusion of this study is that the addition of red shallot peel flour with a level of 1% as an additive in feed gives the best results in improving the characteristics of the small intestine of broiler.

Abstract

Herbal pulp from the production of beras kencur (a traditional Indonesian herbal drink made from Oryza sativa and Kaempferia galangal L.) is an underutilized byproduct that contains valuable nutrients. This study aimed to determine the nutritional content of Oryza sativa and Kaempferia galanga L. herbal pulp through proximate analysis and the evaluation of antioxidant compounds. The experiment employed four treatments: T1 (35% Kaempferia galanga L., 40% Oryza sativa, 5% pandan leaves, 20% palm sugar and water), T2 (50% Kaempferia galanga L., 35% Oryza sativa, 15% brown sugar and water), T3 (35% Kaempferia galanga L., 45% Oryza sativa, 20% brown sugar and water), and T4 (40% Kaempferia galanga L., 40% Oryza sativa, 20% brown sugar and water). The best treatment was T3, with 88.40% dry matter, 11.60% crude protein, 10.92% crude fat, 7.71% crude fibre, 67.42% nitrogen-free extract (NFE), 1.74% ash, 3991.29 kcal gross energy, pH 3.66, and 23.810 ppm antioxidant activity. Treatment T3 has the potential to be used as a feed additive for poultry, with a maximum inclusion rate of 1%. In summary, this study provides novel insight, as it is the first to comprehensively assess the proximate composition and antioxidant potential of Oryza sativa and Kaempferia galanga L. herbal pulp for its application as poultry feed additives.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of the addition of bio-herbal as a feed additive on feed consumption, hen day production, feed egg ratio and mortality of laying hens. The materials in this experiment used 200 laying hens of the Hyline strain age 28 to 36 weeks (reared for 60 days). The method used in this study was an in vivo experimental method using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with treatments consisting of P0 = drinking water without bio-herbals (control treatment), T1 = control treatment + bio-herbal yellow, P2 = control treatment + bio-herbal green, and T3 = control treatment + bio-herbal combination yellow and green (alternately every one week). Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and if there was a significant effect, then tested with Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The observed variables were feed consumption, Hen Day Production (HDP), feed egg ratio and mortality. The results showed that the addition of bio-herbals had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the feed consumption, hen day production, feed egg ratio and mortality. It can be concluded bio-herbal green gives the best results in improving egg quality. Due to the bioactive compounds of bio-herbal green, they consist of probiotic and phytobiotic.

Abstract

Bioherbal, a feed additive made from rhizome extract, exhibited promising capabilities in eradicating pathogenic bacteria residing within the digestive tracts of broiler chickens. The LpxC protein, a biosynthetic regulator of lipid A (a critical component of gram-negative bacterial cell walls), was the focus of this research. Our primary objective was to assess the bioactive potential of bioherbal as a prospective inhibitor of UDP-3-O-(R-3-hydroxymyristoyl)-N-acetylglucosamine (LpxC) by employing in silico methods. Computational analyses were employed to scrutinize the interactions between the LpxC protein and various ligands on Bioherbal. Molecular docking served as the initial screening process, evaluating 48 bioactive compounds based on energy affinity, conformation values, and interactions with protein residues. The three compounds exhibiting the lowest binding affinities were subjected to molecular dynamics simulations. Molecular docking analysis revealed that most of the screened compounds exhibited low binding affinity for LpxC. Elephantorrhizol, zedoraldehyde, glechomanolide, demethoxycurcumin, curcumin, hexahydrocurcumin, gweicurculactone, germacrone, and 1,2-dihydrocurcumin exhibited lower binding affinities (<-7 kcal/mol). Elephantorrhizol, curcumin, and hexahydrocurcumin were selected for further analysis via molecular dynamics due to their similarity to native ligands. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed stable interactions of LpxC. In summary, these findings suggested that Bioherbal possesses the potential to function as an LpxC inhibitor, thereby offering a promising avenue for preventing the proliferation of gram-negative bacteria within the digestive tracts of broiler chickens. This computational study paves the way for further experimental investigations in this domain.

Abstract

The overuse and continuous administration of antibiotics have led to the emergence of resistance, posing challenges in eradicating pathogenic bacteria in poultry digestive tracts. This concern has prompted breeders to seek alternatives, such as turmeric. Turmeric, known for its ability to combat disease-causing microorganisms in the digestive tract and improve livestock performance, is one such herb. This study aimed to assess the impact of fermented turmeric on the phytobiotic content and production performance of laying hens. In the initial phase, turmeric underwent anaerobic fermentation at room temperature for seven days, followed by analysis of curcuminoids and flavonoids. An in vivo study was subsequently conducted with 120 laying hens aged 50 weeks divided into five experimental groups: P0 (basal feed without fermented liquid turmeric) and T1--T4 (basal feed supplemented with fermented liquid turmeric). The results revealed a significant decrease in the curcumin and flavonoid contents after fermentation. Feed consumption increased significantly (P<0.05) but had no significant effect (P>0.05) on hen-day production, egg mass, FCR, or IOFC. numcially decreased FCR values. This study demonstrated that incorporating liquid turmeric into basal feed enhanced production performance while reducing FCR in laying hens. The effect of fermented liquid turmeric on feed consumption was sixty-four percent, and the feed conversion ratio was twenty-four percent. These findings suggest that fermented turmeric can effectively serve as a feed additive in poultry production systems, offering a natural alternative and potentially contributing to sustainable and healthy poultry farming practices

Abstract

The Sugar Factory of Tjoekir Jombang is one of the sugar factories located in Jombang, East Java under PT Perkebunan Nusantara X. Sugarcane waste, also known as bagasse causes pollution of the environment. Some microorganisms are able to degrade cellulose-containing bagasse, because of cellulolytic enzymes produced by cellulolytic bacteria. This study aims to obtain cellulolytic bacteria isolates, screen the highest cellulolytic activity, identify the highest cellulolytic activity isolates, and optimize conditions (pH and temperature) for the highest cellulase activity. Cellulolytic bacteria from bagasse were grown on a medium containing 1% CMC. Several additional minerals were other than those in the CMC medium. The cellulase activity was assayed semi-quantitatively with the addition of 0.1% Congo red and quantitatively using the 3,5-Dinitro Salicylic Acid (DNS) method. Bacterial isolates with high cellulolytic activity were identified based on the 16S rDNA sequence. This research obtained 20 bacterial isolates, where isolate A1T4 had the highest cellulolytic index of 1.18 mm. Measurement of cellulase activity using the DNS method showed that isolate A2T2 had the highest cellulase activity of 2.19 U/mL. Hemolysis assay showed that from 12 isolates, only two isolates have γ-hemolysis activity (isolates A1T6 and A3T3). Those isolates were optimized in a CMC broth medium with temperatures of 30°C and 37°C and pH 5 and pH 6 to produce the highest cellulase activity. Isolate A1T6 and A3T3 were grown optimally at 30oC and pH 6. Isolate A1T6 was identified as Citrobacter amalonaticus with a similarity of 99.80%, and isolate A3T3 was identified as Pseudomonas mendocina with a similarity of 98.83%.
