Abstract

Copra meal is by-product of oil extraction that is produced in large quantity and relatively cheap in Indonesia. However, its high cellulose becomes obstacle for poultry diet. Two studies was conducted to optimize the utilization of copra meal by producing crude enzyme that matched with copra meal using solid state fermentation method with various doses and incubation time that mixed with Pleurotus ostreatus (PO) and Trichoderma viridae (TV). In the first study, copra meal was fermented with 4 levels of inoculum (L0 = no inoculum; L1 = 17.7 CFU/g of TV and 175.00 CFU/g of PO per kg of copra meal; L2 = 35.4 CFU/g of TV and 218.75 CFU/g of PO per kg of copra meal; L3 = 53.1 CFU/g of TV and 262.50 CFU/g of PO per kg of copra meal and 4 incubation time (W1= 4 days; W2 = 6 days; W3 = 8 days; and W4 = 10 days). Parameters measured were crude protein, crude lipid, crude fibre and gross energy. A completely randomized factorial design was used in the study. In the second study, crude enzyme was produced from the best results found in the first study. A method of Jacob and Prema (2006) was used to produce enzyme. Meanwhile, activity of cellulase was measured based on the method of Omojosola (2008). The results showed that factor of inoculum level was found significantly increased protein content and gross energy but decreased crude lipid and crude fibre of the mixed fungi-fermented copra meal. Incubation time did not affect protein content but significanly affected crude lipid, crude fibre and gross energy. Interactions between inoculum level and incubation time was found in crude lipid, crude fibre and gross energy contents of mixed fungi-fermented copra meal. Activity of cellulase was 0.71 g glucose/l.   Keywords : Fermentation, Pleurotus ostreatus, Trichoderma viridae, inoculum level, incubation time, cellulase activity

Abstract

The purpose of this research to determine the pH value and the antimicrobial activity of bilimbi extract (LBW) as a substitute for antibiotics. The method was field experiment using Completely Randomize Design with 4 treatments and 6 replications. The treatments were consist of P0(+) = antibiotic, P1= LBW 10%, P2= LBW 20% and P3= LBW 30%. Bilimbi extract used from bilimbi powder which is then dissolved. The measured variables were pH value and inhibition zone diameter of Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp. and Lactic Acid Bacteria. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and continued by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The result of this research showed that LBW with higher concentration produces low pH value and the treatments between variation of concentration gave significantly different effect (P<0.01) on diameter of inhibition zone for Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp. and Lactic Acid Bacteria. The conclusion of this research was 30% concentration of LBW produces the lowest pH value, so that it can be inhibit the bacterial growth and has the potential as a substitute for antibiotics based on the result of antimicrobial activity that produces the best activity.

Abstract

The aimed research was to examine the effect of used form and level green cincau leaves (Cycleabarbata L. Miers) as feed additive on broiler performance (feed consumption, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and income over feed cost). The materials used were 192 Day Old Chicks (DOC) of Lohman MB Platinum with average initial body weight of 37.4±2.87 g, encapsulated or non encapsulated green cincau leaves (Cycleabarbata L. Miers) and encapsulants. Encapsulants that used was the mixture of gum arab-whey (4:1) wich was added BHT 0.06%. Encapsulants that used was 25% of green cincau leaves (Cycleabarbata L. Miers). The method in this experiment was in vivo experiment with Nested Completely Randomized Design with 2 form of green cincau leaves (Cycleabarbata L. Miers) (non encapsulated and encapsulated) and 4 levels of inclusions 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%, if there were significant effect it would be future tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. The result showed that green cincau leaves (Cycleabarbata L. Miers) in either encapsulated and non encapsulated form didn’t significantly effect (P>0.05) on consumption, feed conversion ratio and IOFC, but it significantly affected (P<0.05) body weight gain and they tended to increase (P<0.01) production index. Increasing levels of green cincau leaves (Cycleabarbata L. Miers) form 0 to 1.5% in encapsulated and non encapsulated form didn’t significantly improve feed conversion ratio, IOFC and production index, thought they tended to increase (P<0.05) feed consumption and they tended to increase (P<0.01) body weight gain. The conclusion of this research was encapsulated better than non encapsulated green cincau leaves (Cycleabarbata L. Miers). The optimal level of feed additive in encapsulated green cincau leaves (Cycleabarbata L. Miers) was 1.0%.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to evaluate: 1) the effect of using different packaging materials on the shelf life of feed additive from acidifier and phytobiotic mixture in encapsulated form and 2) the effect of storage time on the shelf life of feed additive from acidifier and phytobiotic mixture in encapsulated form. The materials used were lactic acid, citric acid, garlic, Phylanthus niruri L., whey, gum arabic, BHT, and microwave oven. The method used was laboratory experiment using Nested Completely Randomized Design. Twenty five treatments were differentiated on five packaging materials, namely PP (P1), OPP (P2), PE (P3), HDPE (P4), and LLDPE (P5) plastics and nested to five storage times, namely 0 (L0), 2 (L2), 4 (L4), 6 (L6), and 8 (L8) weeks. Each plastic had a size of 10 x 8 x 0.03 cm (length, width, and thickness). Storage had been done at room temperature, while daily temperature and humidity were recorded. The variables observed were water content, aw, and molds and yeast TPC. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the packaging materials and storage time gave a significant effect (P<0.01) on water content, aw and molds and yeast TPC of feed additive in encapsulated form. The results of Duncan's Multiple Range Test showed that feed additive in encapsulated form that packed in OPP plastic for 0 week as the best treatment on water content, aw, and molds and yeast TPC. The conclusion of this study were: 1) OPP plastic gave the best results on the shelf life of feed additive in encapsulated form and 2) the increasing of storage time could decline the quality of feed additive in encapsulated form. It is suggested to use OPP plastic for packaging with a thickness of more than 0.03 cm and in vacuum packaging techniques.   Keywords: shelf life, feed additive, encapsulated, acidifier and phytobiotic mixtures, packaging materials, storage time
