Abstract

Abstract: The main interest of this research is to investigate the effect of the use of PWIM technique in improving the students ability in writing procedure text. In conducting this research, researcher used pre-experimental method which consisted of pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The technique in data collecting was measurement technique. The steps in data collecting were administrating pre-test, giving treatment, administrating post-test, and analyzing the test result. The result of this research showed the mean score of pre-test was 51.91 and the mean score of post-test was 63.97. it was also stated that the Effect Size (ES) of the treatment was 0.9 which means the use of PWIM was highly effective in increasing the students ability in writing procedure text. Key Words: Pre-Experimental, PWIM. Abstak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi efek dari penggunaan teknik PWIM untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur. Dalam melaksanakan penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metodologi pre-experimental yang terdiri dari pre-test, treatment dan post-test. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik measurement. Adapun langkah-langkah pengumpulan data adalah sebagai berikut; melaksanakan pre-test, memberikan treatment, melaksanakan post-test, dan menganalisa hasil tes. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan nilai rata-rata pre-test sebesar 51,91 dan nilai rata-rata post-test sebesar 63,97. Adapun Effect Size (ES) dari treatment sebesar 0,9 yang berarti penggunaan PWIM efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur. Kata Kunci: Pre-Experimental, PWIM.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed at improving reading comprehension skill on narrative text through of the eighth grade students of SMP Islamiyah Pontianak in academic year 2012/2013 using Think Pair Share. Think Pair Share (TPS) is one of cooperative teaching strategies which can encourage students to actively engage in the class. In order to achieve the students‟ improvement, action research was conducted in three cycles. During the action it was found that the students mean score of students‟ reading comprehension in the first cycle was 58.83. the second cycle was 65.33. and the third cycle was 75.17. Those three mean scores had proved that Think Pair Share succeeded to improve the students‟ reading ability on narrative text. Keyword: Cooperative Learning, Think Pair Share Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan memahami teks narasi para siswa kelas VIII SMP Islamiyah Pontianak tahun ajaran 2012/2013 dengan menggunakan teknik Think Pair Share. Teknik Think Pair Share (TPS) adalah salah satu teknik pembelajaran kooperatif yang dapat mendorong siswa untuk lebih aktif belajar di kelas. Untuk mencapai perkembangan pemahaman membaca para siswa, Penelitian Tindak Kelas dilaksanakan selama tiga kali. Selama penelitian berlangsung, nilai rata – rata kelas pada siklus penelitian pertama adalah 58.83. nilai rata-rata kelas penelitian kedua adalah 65.33. nilai rata-rata kelas pada penelitian ketiga adalah 75.17. Ketiga nilai penelitian tersebut membuktikan bahwa Think Pair share telah berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam memahami sebuah teks narasi. Abstract

Abstract: The research investigatedthe translation methods used by Sendra B. Tanuwidjaja to translate the metaphors in the Vanished Man Novel by Jeffrey Deaver translated as Si Perapal. This was an analysis descriptive research. There were three chapters out of 52 chapters that were analyzed.There were 30 metaphorical sentences taken from those three chapters. The data were collected by analysis of document. Based on the research findings, from 30 metaphors, 16 metaphors (52.90%) were translated literally, five metaphors (16.50%) were translated with addition, and nine metaphors (29.70%) were translated freely.To conclude, Sendra B. Tanuwidjaja as the translator followed the common pattern of translation where as he tried to emphasize the use of literal translation and made translation equivalence. Key words: Metaphor, Translation of Metaphor, Translation Equivalence Abstrak: Penelitian ini menginvestigasi metode terjemahan yang digunakan oleh Sendra B. Tanuwidjaja untuk menerjemahkan metaphor dalam novel Vanished Man yang dikarang oleh Jeffrey Deaver diterjemahkan sebagai Si Perapal. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Terdapat tiga dari 52 bab yang dianalisis. Terdapat 30 kalimat metaphor yang diambil dari ketiga bab tersebut. Data dikumpulkan melalui analasis dokumen. Berdasarkan temuan penelitian, dari 30 kalimat metaphor, 16 metapor (52,9%) diterjemahkan dengan literal translation, lima metapor (16,5%) diterjemahkan dengan translation with addition, dan Sembilan metaphor (29,7%) diterjemahkan dengan free translation.   Kata Kunci: Metaphor, Terjemahan Metapor, Kesetaraan Terjemahan

Abstract

Abstract : the purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of teaching reading comprehension on narrative text using numbered heads together technique. Numbered heads together is a technique that can make the students become more active in teaching learning. The writer uses Pre-experimental research and the sample of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 Sungai Kakap in which consist of 32 students. The technique of data collecting used is measurement technique and the tool of data collecting is multiple choice test. The data were calculated with the result of students` pre-test is 5.03, the post-test is 7.38. The students` different score between pre-test and post-test is 2.35. From the calculation of t-test that the observed t-test is 13.23 with the degree of freedom 31which is the significant of level of 0.05. The writer finds out that the result of t-test is bigger than t-table (13.23 > 2,204). It is found that the Effect Size (ES) analysis of the effectiveness of teaching reading comprehension on narrative text using numbered heads together technique is 2.17. It is categorized “high”. As the result, teaching reading comprehension on narrative text using numbered heads together technique is highly effective in terms of increasing the students` mean score of narrative text reading comprehension. Tehnik numbered heads together  adalah sebuah tehnik yang bisa membuat siswa menjadi lebih aktif dalam proses belajar mengajar. Penulis menggunakan penelitian Pre-experimental. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas sebelas SMAN 2 Sungai Kakap yang terdiri dari 32 siswa. Tehnik pengumpulan data penelitian ini menggunakan tehnique pengukuran dan alat pengumpulan datanya menggunakan soal pilihan ganda. Penghitungan data dari penelitian ini berdasarkan hasil pre-test 5,03 dan nilai post-test 7,38. Jumlah perbedaan nilai pre-test dan post-test adalah 2,38. Dari penghitungan t-test yang diobservasi adalah 13,23 dengan degree of freedom 31 dengan level signifikan 0,05. Penulis mendapatkan hasil effect size dari mengajar memahami teks naratif menggunakan numbered heads together sebesar 2,17. Hasil ini dikategorikan sebagai “tinggi”. Hasilnya, mengajar memahami teks naratif menggunakan tehnik numbered heads together sangat efektif dalam meningkatkan nilai rata rata siswa dalam memahami teks naratif. Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to know whether or not it is effective to use of Guided Writing Technique in teaching writing report text. This research was applied to a written test before and after the treatments. The researcher applied pre-experimental design. The population of this research were all of the second year students of Don Bosco Senior High School Sanggau in academic year 2017/2018 and the sample was taken from the second year of science students which consists of 38 students. The data was analyzed by using t-test and effect size formula. The finding showed that, the students’ mean score of posttest is 76 that was higher than the students’ mean score of pre-test that is 55.2. On the other hand, the findings also showed that t-test is 10.13 was higher than t-table that is 1.697, while the effect size is 1.64 and categorized as strong effect. In conclusion, the use of Guided Writing Technique is effective in teaching writing report text. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis which stated “Guided Writing Technique is effective to teach writing report text to the second year of science students of Don Bosco Senior High School Sanggau in Academic Year 2017/2018” was accepted. Keywords: Guided Writing Technique, Teaching Writing, Report Text, Pre-Experimental Study

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memecahkan masalah siswa dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara, terutama pada pengucapan dan tata bahasa. Masalah pada pengucapan dan tata bahasa siswa membuat ucapan mereka sulit untuk dimengerti. Kemampuan berbicara yang buruk dapat menyebabkan kesalahpahaman dalam menyampaikan pesan dalam komunikasi lisan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah dialog di mana peneliti memfokuskan pada peningkatan keterampilan berbicara siswa  dalam  percakapan setiap  hari. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus. Peningkatan keterampilan berbicara siswa dapat dilihat dari hasil setiap pertemuan. Berdasarkan analisis data, nilai rata-rata dari siklus 1 adalah 54,64. Untuk setiap aspek, nilai rata-rata dari pengucapan adalah 59,28, dan 50,00 untuk tata bahasa. Hanya ada 14 siswa (50%) yang mendapat 70 atau lebih tinggi dan memenuhi syarat sebagai memiliki kemampuan komunikatif yang baik.  Rata-rata  siklus  2  adalah  71,78.  Untuk  setiap aspek,  nilai  rata-rata dari pengucapan adalah 76,42, dan 67,14 untuk tata bahasa. Ada perbaikan dalam setiap aspek dari siklus 1 ke siklus 2. Persentase jumlah siswa yang mendapat 70 atau lebih tinggi 78,94% naik menjadi. Berdasarkan hasil dari siklus 1 dan 2 cyle, dapat disimpulkan bahwa mengajar berbicara melalui dialog dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa. Kata kunci : Mengajar, Berbicara, Melalui Dialog   Abstract: The purpose of this research is to solve students’ problem in improving speaking skills, particularly their poor pronunciation and grammar. The students’ problem in their pronunciation and grammar make their speech hard to be recognized.  Poor  speaking  may  lead  to  misunderstanding  in  delivering  the message in oral communication. The method used in this research is dialogue in which the researcher concerned with the improvement of students’ speaking skill in every day. This research was conducted in two cycles. The improvement of students’ speaking skill could be seenfrom the result of every meeting. Based on the data analysis, the mean score of cycle 1 is 54.64. For each aspect, the mean score of pronunciation is 59,28, and 50,00 for grammar. There were only 14 students (50 %) who got 70 or higher and qualified as having good communicative ability. The mean score of cycle 2 is 71.78. For each aspect, the mean score of pronunciation is 76,42, and 67,14 for grammar. There were improvements in each aspect from cycle 1 to cycle 2. The percentage of the number of students who got 70 or higher rose to 78,94%. Based on the result from cycle 1 and cyle 2, it can be conluded that teaching speaking through dialogue can improve the students’ speaking skill. Keyword: Teaching, Speaking. Through Dialogue

Abstract

This research was done to know the factors’ influencing students’ motivation to speak in a group discussion. This research is qualitative survey, in which the subjects are the Third-Semester Students of English Education Study Program of Tanjungpura University in Academic Year 2018/2019. The subjects of this research were 25 students in class A. The data were collected through observation and survey. Based on the data the students are motivated enough in speaking class and the motivation are relatively high across the students but most of the students faced several speaking problems such as afraid of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation. In summary, the factors that influenced the students’ motivation to speak in a group discussion are the students' interest to the materials of learning, the students’ interest to the culture of the target language, and lastly the reinforced that the students receive inside/outside the teaching and learning process. All of the factors are related to types of motivation, such as, intrinsic, extrinsic, instrumental, and integrative motivation. The writer claimed that knowing and understand sorts of motivation is essential with the intention of making a better teaching and learning environment

Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the teacher's experience in teaching speaking using STAD. The subject of this research was an English teacher of SMAN 10 Pontianak who was experienced in teaching English by using STAD. This research was a case study to describe the teacher's experience while using STAD in teaching speaking. The data were collected from interviews, audio-visual materials, and document reviews. The speaking score of 36 students from the Year-10 students of SMAN 10 Pontianak in Academic Year 2019/2020 was used in this research. The results showed that the STAD technique affected the students' speaking learning achievement as much as 9 out of 36 students experienced an increase in their score by 4%. Some internal factors contributed to those students' achievement, namely, students' contributions, motivating students, and improving student skills. Moreover, the findings revealed that some students did not achieve the goal of learning by using STAD. This is caused by several factors, namely managing time, managing class, and lack of speaking skills become the difficulties of this research.Keywords: Case Study, Experience, STAD, Speaking Skill.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the most occurrence types of code used in the novel and the purposes that contribute to those occurrences. The data were derived from qualitative technique using a novel as the material. The data were analyzed using manual coding and descriptive qualitative. The result of this research showed that code-switching is the most code used rather than code-mixing. The total of the utterances that used code-switching is 53 in total. Meanwhile, the most type of code-switching that used in the novel is intra-sentential which has 27 in total. There were some purposes that contributed to those occurrences, namely, quoting somebody else, express solidarity, and express disapproval. In the novel, switching a code is used to quote a famous expression, proverb, or writing some well-known figures. Also, it is used to express solidarity, to show the bonding between characters. A status relationship between people may be relevant in choosing the appropriate code. Additionally, express disapproval also can contribute to the occurrence in the novel, to express anger or unpleasant events. Therefore, the three factors are contributed to the occurrence of code-switching in the novel.

Abstract

This study has a problem that students have low motivation in speaking skill and the aim of this study is to examine how the size of the TikTok application affected on students’ speaking skill motivation of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Sungai Raya in the academic year 2021/2022. Pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design is used in this research process. The researcher selected  X Mia 3 by using the purposive sampling technique consisting of 32 students. The questionnaire sheet is the instrument used in this study. Pre-test and post-test data were collected and analyzed using a t-test. This study found that the average pre-test score was 79.43 and the post-test score was 84.53. The result of the t-test was 5.86. The t-table with 31 degrees of freedom (df) and a significance at level 0.05 was 2.03. Analysis of the data revealed that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted because the t-test was higher than the t-table (5.862.03). In addition, the effect size was 0.99, which is classified as a very strong effect (0.8). Thus, implementing the TikTok application very strong affects students' speaking  skill motivation.
