Abstract

Abstract

This study examines English syntax, which is concerned with the study of the ordering of components or constituents in phrases and sentences. The spotlight of investigation was directed toward the ordering of the constituents of noun phrases found in the tale Cinderella. The noun phrases found in the tale were broken down into their constituent parts for two reasons. The first is to reveal the sequential ordering of constituents in noun phrases. Do all noun phrases in the tale follow the following sequential ordering: pre-modifiers + head noun + post=modifiers? Do pre-modifiers consist of determiners and adjectives? What constituents can these determinants be broken into? Do the adjectives consist of one single adjective or a series of adjectives? Do post-modifiers consist of prepositional phrases and relative clauses? How many prepositional phrases did the writer use to post-modify a head noun? How many relative clauses did the writer use to post modify the head noun? Did the writer place prepositional phrases before or after the relative clauses? Are relative clauses reduced or non-reduced in nature? Second, to reveal the types of noun phrases used by the writer of the tale—basic or complex noun phrases. Are most noun phrases used by the writer basic or complex in nature? To attain the research objectives mentioned above, a descriptive method was used. This method attempts to describe and interpret the types and sequential ordering of the constituent parts of noun phrases found in the tale Cinderella.

Abstract

Language’s role in society is pivotal. People utilize language, which includes gesture language and spoken, written, and other forms of structured communication to interact with their surroundings. It is considered flouting the conversational maxims when speakers purposefully stray from the accepted conventions of communication, frequently with a goal in mind. The research objective was to identify the four conversational maxims being flouted in the movie “Turning Red.” The research employed a descriptive research design. The data was gathered through the viewing of the movie and writing down the dialogues in which the characters flouted the four conversational maxims, as well as the types of conversational maxims being flouted, the contexts, the motivations behind the flouting of the conversational maxims, and the implicatures. The results show that four distinct types of conversational maxims are indeed being flouted in the movie “Turning Red”, such as the maxims of quantity with the percentage of 19.5% and the frequency of 7, quality with the percentage of 33.3% and the frequency of 12, relevance with the percentage of 33.3% and the frequency of 12, and manner with the percentage of 13.9% and the frequency of 5. The findings of the research indicate the potentiality of the movie as a medium to learn about pragmatics, especially the flouting of the four conversational maxims, for students.

Abstract

Analytical exposition text is one of the texts studied by eleventh-grade students, and they are asked to produce the analytical exposition text by themselves. However, they faced some difficulties that impede their teaching and learning of making the analytical exposition text. This research aimed to design Materials of Writing Analytical Exposition Text (MOWAET) as a supplementary teaching material to support teaching and learning analytical exposition text. This research was developmental research and applied ADDIE as the procedure to design the materials. Still, there were only three implemented phases in this research: analyzing, designing, and developing. MOWAET was the completed design product for teaching-learning analytical exposition text. The researcher interviewed an English teacher of SMA Negeri 4 Pontianak to do the analyzing phase. MOWAET was created by using PowerPoint and Animaker as the supporting software. The researcher used an internal evaluation to ensure that the product is usable in the development phase. The internal evaluation phase showed that MOWAET met all the criteria, including the objectives, the content, and the media option. Shortening, it was found that the materials of writing analytical exposition text (MOWAET) are usable to support teaching and learning analytical exposition text.

Abstract

This study aimed to measure how significant is the effect of using the Word Search game as a pre-activity in improving the vocabulary mastery of fourth-grade students at SD Islam Mu’tashim Billah during the Academic Year 2023/2024. The research applied a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, using a total sampling technique that selected 15 students from the tenth grade as the research sample. Analysis of the pre- and post-test data using a t-test revealed a pre-test mean score of 37.66 and a post-test mean score of 84.66. The t-test result, indicating -12.89, was compared to the t-table value of 1.761% at a 0.05 significance level with 14 degrees of freedom (df). Based on the above data analysis, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted because the t-test was smaller than the t-table (-12.89-1.761). Furthermore, the effect size of 3.43 indicated a very strong effect (0.8). In conclusion, the use of the Word Search game as a pre-activity in teaching significantly influences students' vocabulary mastery.
