Abstract

Dioscorea was a member of Dioscoreaceae, ordo of liliales and class of Monocotyledoneae, Two types of Dioscorea were annual and perennial. As much as 50-60 species of 600 species was cultivated as food source. This research was conducted to study tuber characters and nutrition content of Dioscorea sp. Plant material was Dioscorea collection from some places in Indonesia. Five accessions of Dioscorea alata. Dioscorea esculenta and Dioscorea hispida. were analyzed for the content of fat, protein and starch. Tube characters observed were tuber number, tuber weight, length and diameter. There were significant differences of tube character, protein and starch content between Dioscorea accession. The highest tuber weight and starch content were resulted by D.alata especially accession number 49. The highest protein content was resulted by accession number 67 of D. esculenta. Positive correlation between tuber diameter and tuber weight of D. alata showed that higher accumulation of fotosynthate was followed by increasing tuber diameter. In other words, sink capacity was determined by tuber diameter. Key words: Tuber, Dioscorea spp., Nutrition content

Abstract

The research was conducted to study the correlation between deficit of evapotranspiration and yield decreasing.   Factorial experiment was arranged in Randomized Block Design.  First factor was irrigation frequency of 1, 2, 4 and 6 days.  Second factor were nine upland rice lines.  Evapotranspiration was measured with simple lysimeter based on water balance. There was positive correlation between deficit of evapotranspiration and yield decreasing. Defisit of evapotranspiration as much as 240.06 mm caused yield decreasing of 90% and dry matter weight decreasing of 72.5%. The relation between total evapotranspiration (E, mm) and dry matter weight (DM, g/plant) was DM = 0.0245 E + 13.85.  Water use efficiency or yield and evapotranspiration ratio correlated with leaf width and sum of seed each panicle  positively .  Increasing leaf width and sum of seed each panicle could increase water use efficiency.    Key Words : evapotranspiration, water use efficiency, upland rice, lysimeter.

Abstract

This experiment was aimed to study the effect of tap root length and storage duration on growth of Sengon stump. The field experiment was carried out as a two factors factorial experiment. The treatments were arranged in Randomized Block Design with three replications. The tap root length of 25 %, 50 %, 75 %, and 100 % of original tap root length were the levels of first factor. The storage duration 0 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, and 92 hours after revoking were the levels of second factor. The tap root length affected shoot to root ratio. The least damage root gave the lowest shoot to root ratio. The root length 25 % gave the highest shoot to root ratio, but the difference between 50 %, 75 %, and 100 % were not significant. At 18 weeks after planting, the shoot diameter, shoot height, leaf number, shoot dry weight and root dry weight were not affected by tap root length and storage duration after revoking. Interaction between two factors did not effect all of the observed variables.

Abstract

The research was conducted to investigate the effect of copper (Cu) levels in irrigation water on the growth and production of rice variety IR64. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with six replications. The Cu treatments were: 0, 300, 600 and 900 mg Cu L-1of irrigation water. The results showed that Cu content significantly decreased rice growth and production. Copper level of 600 mg L-1 decreased plant height, tiller number and leaf number. Copper level of 300 mg L-1 decreased panicle length, number of grains per panicle, empty grain weight, 100 grains weight, milled grain weight, and shoot dry weight. This experiment implies that remediation treatments should be considered when Cu level in irrigation water was more than 300 mg Cu L-1. Copper level of 300 mg L-1 could be used as a critical level for rice screening for Cu tolerant varieties in the plant breeding program. Abstract

ABSTRACTShifting of upland rice cultivation to marginal land faces drought stress, while planting under young plantation faces shading stress. There should be lines or varieties with good agronomic character and tolerant to the shading stress. Lines used in this experiment were obtained  from anther culture, i.e., III3-4-6-1, I5-10-1-1, WI-44, GI-7, O18-b-1, IW-67, IG-19, IG-38, IW-56, B13-2-e. Two experiments were conducted, i.e., agronomic performance experiment and shading tolerance experiment with a quick test method at seedling phase. Batutegi and Way Rarem were used as check varieties in the agronomic experiment. In shading tolerance experiment, Kalimutu was used as sensitive check and Jatiluhur was tolerant check varieties. The results of experiment indicated that B13-2-e (4.64 ton ha-1) and WI-44 line (4.05 ton ha-1) dihaploid lines showed high grain yield and comparable to Way Rarem (4.95 ton ha-1). B13-2-e and WI-44 lines were tolerant to shading. Another tolerant lines to shading, i.e., I5-10-1-1, O18-b-1, and IW-56. B13-2-e and WI-44 lines were recommended to advanced verification on multiple cropping system. Keywords: dry land, multiple cropping

Abstract

ABSTRACTDetermination of the appropriate volume of irrigation is needed in hydroponic systems. The easy and rapid method for determination of volume irrigation should be developed. The research was conducted to determine irrigation volume based on evaporation and to study their effect on melon growth and yield in hydroponic system. The irrigation water volume was determined based on evaporation (E) of the 30 cm diameter pan placed over the crop canopy, and melon (Cucumis melo L.) plant was subjected to four irrigation water levels (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 E) in combination with three periods of irrigation based on plant growth phase ( planting to harvesting; planting to flowering, and flowering to harvesting). At three weeks after planting, irrigation volume of 1.5 E increased plant height as much as 54% compared with irrigation volume of 0.5 E; irrigation volume of 2.0 E increased leaf number as much as 47% compared with irrigation volume of 0.5 E. Melon yield was 2.173 kg per plant by irrigation volume of 2.0 E applied during planting to flowering, increased of 98% compared with irrigation volume of 0.5 E, but it was not significant different with irrigation volume of 1.5 E applied during flowering to harvesting. It is concluded that irrigation volume for hydroponically-grown melon was as much as 1.0 time of evaporation during vegetative phase and 1.5 times of evaporation during generative phase. Keywords: evaporation, sand media, flower number, fruit diameter, fruit weight

Abstract

ABSTRACTUpland rice cultivation required specific cultivation, particularly the use of crop varieties that have good water-use efficiency or varieties that are able to adapt to the conditions of limited water availability. The aim of this study was to describe characters of morphology and physiology related to water use efficiency of upland rice varieties. The research was conducted from October 2013 to April 2014 in the greenhouse IPB Experimental Station Cikabayan, Bogor. The research was arranged in randomized block design with two factors. The first factor was 5 upland rice varieties (Inpago 5, Batutegi, Jatiluhur, Inpago 8 and Sarinah). The second factor was 4 irrigation intervals which were 3, 6, 9, and 12 days. Characteristics assosiated with water saving of upland rices were higher plant height, longer panicle, larger roots volume, narrower leaves, higher evapotranspiration, faster flowering phase, greener leaves, higher number of leaves and tillers, heavier dry matter, higher number of grains, heavier 100 grain weight and dry weight of grains. The fraction of available absorbed water at panicle  initiation,  flowering  and  harvesting  were 83.36%, 137.14% and 116.65%, respectively, to obtain dry grains of 3.39 ton ha-1.Keywords: evapotranspiration, water fraction, WUE
