Abstract

The demand for imported tangerines, especially Mandarin tangerines, has continued to increase domestically over the years. However, there is also a local variety of tangerine whose appearance, flavor, and aroma are relatively similar to those of the Mandarin tangerine, and it is said to have great potential to become a strong competitor in the domestic market — the Batu 55 tangerine. The ideal environmental conditions for cultivating Batu 55 tangerines are in highland areas with altitudes ranging from 700 to 1,200 meters above sea level. Nevertheless, due to its promising market prospects, several farmers in lowland areas (below 700 meters above sea level), such as in Sembulung Village – Cluring District – Banyuwangi Regency – East Java Province, have begun to show interest in cultivating it as a monoculture crop. Since the cultivation is being developed in lowland areas, it is important to question its financial feasibility. Research results show that: (a) a monoculture Batu 55 tangerine plantation investment project per hectare in Banyuwangi Regency, with a planting distance of 5 x 5 meters, using seedlings propagated vegetatively (cuttings), an estimated economic lifespan of 16 years, base year set in 2011, and a discount rate/discount factor (df) of 9% per year, is considered financially feasible; (b) if there is a decrease in production quantity and average selling price by up to 30%, the investment project becomes financially infeasible; and (c) if operational variable costs increase by up to 30%, the investment project remains financially feasible.. Abstract

Indonesia holds significant potential in both domestic and international tobacco markets, ranking as the world's fourth-largest producer after China, India, and Brazil. However, unmanufactured tobacco (HS 2401) exports lag imports, potentially impacting the economy negatively. This study analyzes the dependency, openness, and characteristics of Indonesia's tobacco imports over a 10-year period (2014-2023), alongside the factors influencing import volumes from 1992 to 2022. Secondary data was sourced from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), UN Comtrade, FAO, and the Ministry of Agriculture. Analytical methods included the Import Dependency Ratio (IDR), Self-Sufficiency Ratio (SSR), Trade Specialization Index (TSI), Import Openness Degree (IOD), Geographic Concentration Degree (GCD), and multiple linear regression. The results reveal an average IDR of 26.96% and an SSR of 73.04%, indicating that 26.96% of tobacco demand is met through imports, while 73.04% is fulfilled domestically. The average TSI value of -0.55 signifies Indonesia as a net importer. The average import openness (IOD) was 0.06% of GDP during 2014-2023. International tobacco prices and domestic demand significantly influenced import volumes, whereas domestic production and prices showed no significant impact. The Indonesian cigarette industry exhibits high import dependence due to domestic production not yet meeting required quantity and quality standards. Recommendations include enhancing tobacco quantity and quality through Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) implementation, providing comprehensive support for developing industry-aligned tobacco, and ratifying the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) to reduce tobacco consumption and imports.

Abstract

Abstract

The era of globalization and digitalization has brought significant disruption to global food systems, including in Indonesia. Multidimensional challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and global food price volatility have increased the urgency of designing adaptive, and region-based food security strategies. This study aims to analysed the key determining factors of food security from the perspectives of digital technology and the green economic principles across 36 regencies and cities in East Java Province. Spatial regression analysis was employed to examine the impact of selected variables and capture spatial interdependence among regions. The results reveal that the Indonesia Digital Society Index, particularly the pillars of infrastructure (β = 0.3355) and ecosystem (β = 0.0015), has a positive and significant impact on improving the Food Security Index. Conversely, the digital job pillar shows a negative association (β = -0.4927), suggesting that the rise of digital employment may not align with local food security efforts. Additionally, premium and medium rice prices positively influence food security, while local soybean prices have a negative effect. The spatial lag coefficient (ρ = 0.6361) confirms that the existence of positive spatial autocorrelation, indicating that neighbouring regions tend to influence each other's food security dynamics. These findings emphasize the need for regional food security strategies that integrate digital transformation with green economic principles. Policy implications include strengthening digital infrastructure, fostering interregional collaboration, ensuring equitable digital access, and promoting environmentally sustainable agriculture—aligning with Indonesia’s long-term vision for a resilient, inclusive, and adaptive food system.   Key words:   digital transformation; food security; green economy; spatial analysis

Abstract

Crystal guava has a promising market potential due to its relatively high demand, especially in various supermarkets—both in small towns and major cities across Indonesia—and its selling price is relatively stable. Crystal guava has several advantages compared to other guava varieties, including a fresher and sweeter taste, a crunchy texture, thick flesh, and being almost seedless. It is relatively easy to cultivate, has a high harvesting frequency, and tends to bear fruit throughout the year regardless of the season. Therefore, farmers in Karanggondo Village, Tegalsari District, Banyuwangi Regency, have begun cultivating it as a monoculture crop since 2012. Considering this situation, it is deemed interesting to conduct research on the financial feasibility of a Crystal guava plantation investment project under a monoculture system per hectare in Banyuwangi Regency. The research results show that the investment project is financially “feasible.” However, if production volume and product price decrease by up to 48.96%, and variable operating costs increase by up to 79.02%, while other factors remain constant, the Crystal guava monoculture plantation investment project per hectare in Banyuwangi Regency becomes financially “unfeasible.” Among these factors, the decline in production volume and selling price are found to be relatively “more sensitive” in influencing the project’s financial feasibility.

Abstract

The Covid19 pandemic has had a major impact on weakening Indonesia's economic sectors, including Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The MSME sector is one of the sectors that makes a big contribution to the national economy, so it needs to rise during the current Covid19 pandemic. Such as the problems experienced by food businesses in Kraton Village - Jember regarding the decline in turnover caused by the Covid19 pandemic. The decline in sales results was not only caused by the COVID-19 pandemic but also a lack of product marketing such as not utilizing online marketing via social media. Insufficient understanding of how to market products online is also one of the reasons for the decline in product sales during this pandemic. Seeing situations like this, it is necessary to carry out activities aimed at educating on the use of social media and optimizing business during this pandemic.
