Abstract

The lack of community involvement poses a significant obstacle that may impede the achievement of success in the conservation partnership program between the Mount Merbabu National Park (MMNP) authority and the local community. This study serves a purpose and presents a new approach by investigating the impact of human and social capital on community engagement in the conservation partnership program, with the mediation of the extension worker’s role. This location was determined using a purposive method, focusing primarily on three villages surrounding MMNP, Indonesia. The sampling technique employed was simple random sampling, where 30 respondents were chosen from each village, resulting in a total sample size of 90 respondents. This study examines the variables using the Structural Equation Model (SEM) - Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach. Social capital has a positive and significant impact on community engagement through forestry extension workers, while human capital does not affect community conservation partnership involvement through the same workers. This study recommends enhancing social capital to increase community participation in conservation initiatives. Forestry extension officers should improve communication, social networks, and environmental competency to encourage greater community involvement in environmental protection. Keywords: community engagement, extension workers role, forest conservation, human capital, social capital

Abstract

The use of chemical inputs in agriculture has generated negative impacts on the environment, human health, and the sustainability of food systems, thereby encouraging the development of environmentally friendly and organic farming. Karanganyar Regency, through regulations and the establishment of the Karanganyar Organic Farmers Association (APOKAT), has demonstrated strong commitment to organic farming development. However, practices in the field still face challenges, particularly in production aspects, where some farmers have not consistently implemented Standard Operating Procedures (GAP-GHP). This condition poses risks of declining productivity and the sustainability of organic farming areas. To address these issues, a community service program was carried out from August to October 2024 in Mojogedang District, Karanganyar. The methods included GAP and GHP socialization, farmer field schools, demonstration plot management, training on organic input production, and focus group discussions (FGD). The participants consisted of 25 pioneer farmers representing groups under APOKAT. Farmers’ knowledge was evaluated through pre-tests and post-tests using a Likert scale. The results showed a significant improvement in farmers’ knowledge, with the average score increasing from 3.13 to 4.57. The improvement covered all indicators, particularly land preparation and crop maintenance. Furthermore, correlation analysis indicated a significant positive relationship between increased farmers’ knowledge and the sustainability of organic farming, with the environmental dimension being the highest. In conclusion, this program not only enhanced farmers’ capacity in implementing GAP and GHP for organic rice farming but also strengthened the sustainability of organic agriculture in Karanganyar. These results may serve as a best practice model for other regions in developing sustainable organic farming.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the high dependence of rice farmers in Boyolali Regency on diesel-fueled water pumps, which causes high operational costs and production instability due to fluctuations in fuel prices. Agricultural electrification through the use of electric pumps is a more efficient and sustainable alternative, but its adoption rate is still relatively low. This study aims to analyze the influence of Perceived Benefits, Ease of Use, and Farmer Trust on the Adoption of Agricultural Electrification. The study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. The study population was all rice farmers who had used or had access to electric pumps in Giriroto Village, Ngemplak District, and Babadan Village, Sambi District, Boyolali Regency. The study was conducted from December 2025 to January 2026. Primary data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The results showed that Perceived Benefits and Ease of Use had a positive and significant effect on the Adoption of Agricultural Electrification, while Farmer Trust had no significant effect. An R² value of 0.770 (77%) indicates that the model has strong explanatory power. This finding indicates that adoption decisions are more influenced by tangible benefits and ease of use than by trust. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of strengthening the dissemination of benefits and improving the ease of operation of the technology to accelerate agricultural electrification.

Abstract

Organic certification is urgently needed for long pepper to meet global market standards and enhance product credibility. Wonogiri Regency is the largest center for long pepper production in Central Java, with this biopharmaceutical commodity cultivated for generations. Its promising market potential necessitates meeting global standards, including organic certification. This community service initiative aims to bridge knowledge gaps and improve farming practices through Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for organic long pepper. The methods used include classroom activities to assess farmer knowledge and transfer knowledge through socialization and field activities in demonstration plots, starting with the identification of farmer training priorities. A pre-test survey revealed that while over 65% of farmers understood the planting stage, less than 50% were familiar with land preparation, planting, and harvesting. This low level of knowledge is due to a lack of information on farming practices that comply with organic Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Key training priorities identified include: (1) preparation and application of organic fertilizers and pesticides, (2) propagation of organic long pepper seeds, and (3) post-harvest handling. To address these, the Organic Field School (OFiS) was established as a training platform, equipping farmers with practical skills. The results indicate that farmers gained significant knowledge and can now independently implement organic long pepper cultivation. OFiS method can bridge the farmer’s knowledge gap, increase farmers’ knowledge in preparation, growing, planting, and harvesting based on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). OFiS serves as an effective solution to enhance sustainable agricultural practices, supporting farmers in producing high-quality organic long pepper that meets global standards.
