Abstract

Insulin injections and oral hypoglycemic drugs are the main therapies available for the treatment of diabetes. However, side effects and dependence make many sufferers not continue treatment. The development of plant-based antidiabetic alternatives continues, one of which is the genus Laportea, which contains flavonoids and derivative compounds, such as quercetin, that are able to control blood sugar.  The purpose of this literature review is to provide evidence-based information on the potential content of quercetin in Laportea. This literature review was created by searching databases such as: Pubmed, Elsevier, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Searches on Elsevier and google Scholar were conducted using the following keywords: "quercetin AND Laportea decumana", "quercetin AND Laportea aestuans", "quercetin AND Laportea bulbifera" "Flavanoid AND quercetin AND Laportea". "quercetin AND antidiabetic". Meanwhile, the keywords to search for articles on pubmed are done by writing quercetin AND Laportea [MeSH]", "Flavanoid AND quercetin AND Laportea [MeSH]". "quercetin AND antidiabetic [MeSH]". The search was conducted on articles published in 2010-2025. The search was conducted on articles published in 2015-2025. Articles are selected and reviewed according to the theme and research questions by all researchers. Quercetin provides superior hypoglycemic effects and insulin sensitization activity by promoting pancreatic cell-β proliferation and by increasing glucose metabolism and insulin secretion. previous studied reported that the administration of 20 mmol· L-1 QE to pancreatic β cells INS-1 increases insulin secretion induced by glucose and gliclazide and protects β cells against oxidative damage. The results of this review literature have explained that the benefits of the laportea plant to overcome diabetes are the content  of Quercetin which can provide a superior hypoglycemic effect.

Abstract

A prevalent issue among the elderly is cognitive deterioration. Modifications in behavior and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle have been demonstrated to mitigate cognitive decline in the elderly. The objective of community service initiatives is to disseminate knowledge regarding cognitive health in the elderly and to offer brain workouts to the community, particularly targeting women who are PKK activists in Mliwis Village. This community service initiative employs an instructional methodology that incorporates PowerPoint presentations and leaflets, utilizing a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The event took place at the Posyandu Sidorejo in Mliwis Village, Boyolali. The target audience for this activity was PKK mothers in Mliwis Village, Boyolali Regency, Central Java. To measure the level of knowledge about cognitive health, a questionnaire developed by the community service team was used. This activity consisted of six stages, namely opening, pretest, education, group brain exercises, discussion, and post-test. 51 participants, comprising PKK mothers, attended this activity. The most extensive age range was 31-40 years old, with 16 (31.4%) participants, and the largest occupation was housewife, with 36 (70.6%) participants. The education and discussion activities went well. The enthusiasm of the participants also increased with the joint brain exercises. The average pretest and posttest scores were 90.26 ± 10.78 and 93.68 ± 7.50, respectively. There was a significant difference in knowledge between the pretest and post-test measurements (p = 0.034; < 0.05). It is hoped that this educational activity will help form independent and happy elderly people.

Abstract

Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam leaves are recognized as a promising source of bioactive compounds with potential antidiabetic activity. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) fractionation on the distribution of phenolic and flavonoid compounds and their α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Crude ethanolic extract was fractionated by VLC into polar, semipolar, and nonpolar fractions. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride colorimetric assays, respectively, while α-glucosidase inhibitory activity was evaluated using a p-nitrophenyl-α-D-glucopyranoside-based assay. The crude extract exhibited the highest TPC (4.70 ± 0.37 mg GAE/g extract) and TFC (5.63 ± 0.11 mg QE/g extract), whereas both parameters decreased markedly after fractionation. Consistently, the crude extract showed the strongest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, as indicated by the lowest IC₅₀ value, while the nonpolar fraction exhibited the weakest activity. These findings demonstrate that VLC fractionation redistributed rather than enhanced the bioactive constituents responsible for α-glucosidase inhibition. The crude extract therefore represents a promising natural source of α-glucosidase inhibitors and supports the potential utilization of Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam for the development of plant-derived antidiabetic agents.

Abstract

Purpose: to test whether the combination of Moringa oleifera L. and guava (Psidium guajava) leaf extract has a better effect in reducing blood glucose levels compared to single extracts. Method: an experiment with a pre- and post-test with control group design. The samples were Moringa leaves, guava leaves with 30 Wistar rats divided into 6 groups. Normal control group, negative control group (Na CMC 1%), positive control group (glibenclamide 5 mg/kgBW), Moringa leaf extract group dose 100 mg/kgBW, guava leaf extract group dose 105 mg/kgBW, and a combination group of Moringa leaf extract with guava leaves. Data analysis used a computerized program using the Welch ANOVA and Post Hoc Games-Howell tests. Results: showed that all treatment groups significantly reduced blood glucose levels compared to negative controls (p<0.05), but the effect was not comparable to positive controls and was not significant with normal controls on day 21. The combination of EEDK and EEDJB did not provide a better effect than the single extract. Conclusion: This study shows that the single extract and the combination of moringa leaf and guava leaf extracts have antidiabetic activity, but the combination of moringa leaf and guava leaf extracts did not show a better effect.

Abstract

Kata kunci: penyuluhan; PPKO; diabetes melitus Abstract Nowadays, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are affecting younger populations, with incidence rates continuing to rise among adolescents and young adults. One NCD with a high prevalence in Indonesia is Diabetes Mellitus (DM). In Simo District, the incidence of DM ranks sixth at the regency level; however, there have been no educational programs regarding DM aimed at preventing the disease. Therefore, we carried out a community service programme for the residents of Wates Village, which is one of the villages in Simo Sub-district, as an early prevention effort against DM. This community service programme aimed to improve public knowledge regarding DM, both in terms of prevention and management, as well as to conduct early blood sugar level checks. The methods used included health education on diabetes, blood glucose level checks, and pre-posttest evaluations. This activity was attended by 31 participants comprising posyandu cadres, members of the PKK, and village officials from Wates Village, held at the Wates Village Hall, Simo Sub-district, Boyolali Regency, Central Java Province on 14 July 2024. Evaluation results indicate no statistically significant difference between the participants' mean pre-test and post-test scores based on the paired t-test, although an increase in the mean score was observed. This outcome is attributed to the educational media employed—specifically leaflets and engaging presentation slides—which heightened participant attention to the material. Furthermore, blood glucose screening revealed no instances of hyperglycemia among the participants. This community service initiative, comprising health education and blood glucose screening, successfully improved participants' knowledge of diabetes mellitus and provided them with access to early blood glucose testing. Keywords: health education; PPKO; diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Hair plays an important role in supporting appearance and self confidence, but problems with hair loss and slow hair growth still often occur; Mangkokan leaves (Nothopanax scutellarium) are known to contain flavonoids such as quercetin which can stimulate hair growth through various mechanisms, and nanoemulsion formulations have been shown to increase the absorption of these active compounds, so this study aims to examine the effectiveness of mangkokan leaves on hair growth through a systematic review based on PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines with a literature search until November 16, 2024 in the Emerald Publishing, SpringerLink, EBSCO, Cochrane, ProQuest, Science Direct, Scopus, and PubMed databases, of the 68 articles found, only 5 studies met the inclusion criteria after screening, and the results showed that the formulation of mangkokan leaves in the form of ethosomal gel or phytosome lotion at a concentration of 25% was most effective in stimulating hair growth with a mechanism involving the activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) to increase blood supply to follicles, regulation of nitric oxide (NO) balance and decreased inflammation by quercetin, inhibition of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase to reduce dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, as well as increasing the expression of growth factors such as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), which overall support the extension of the anagen phase (active hair growth phase) and improve hair health, so that mangkokan leaves have high potential as an active ingredient in hair care products, although further research is still needed to ensure their long-term safety and effectiveness.
