Abstract

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common pregnancy complication and can seriously impact the health of the mother and fetus if not managed properly. This study aims to determine the characteristics of UTI in pregnant women. The study design used was a retrospective descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach, with a minimum sample size of 59 samples. Data collected came from secondary data in the form of medical records of pregnant women suffering from UTI at Klungkung Regional Hospital in 2021-2025. The collected data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS version 25. The results showed that UTI occurred most frequently in 2023, especially in pregnant women aged >35 years (66.1%) and in the second trimester of gestation (45.8%), with the majority being unemployed (57.6%). The most common clinical symptoms were suprapubic pain (27.4%), abdominal pain (17.9%), and fever (15.4%), with dominant urinalysis findings being cloudy urine, positive leukocyte esterase, positive urine erythrocytes, and positive bacteria (94.9%), and the most common pharmacological treatment was antibiotics (50%). The conclusion of this study indicates that UTIs in pregnant women are more common in the elderly reproductive age group and in the second trimester of pregnancy.

Abstract

Introduction: Antibiotic resistance is an increasing global health problem, particularly associated with Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which shows resistance to β-lactam antibiotics and can cause severe infections. This condition has encouraged the exploration of alternative antibacterial agents derived from natural sources. Aloe vera contains various bioactive compounds, such as saponins, flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic compounds, which potentially exhibit antibacterial activity. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Aloe vera extract in inhibiting the growth of MRSA. Methods: This experimental laboratory study employed a posttest-only control group design using the disk diffusion method on Mueller–Hinton agar. Aloe vera extract was tested at concentrations of 15μg/mL, 20μg/mL, 25μg/mL, and 50μg/mL. Vancomycin and 0.9% NaCl were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by measuring the diameter of inhibition zones. Data were analyzed descriptively. Result: The findings indicated that all concentrations of Aloe vera extract failed to produce inhibition zones against MRSA, with inhibition diameters of 0.00 mm. The positive control showed strong antibacterial activity, whereas the negative control exhibited no inhibitory effect. Conclusion: Aloe vera extract at concentrations of 15%, 20%, 25%, and 50% was not effective in inhibiting the growth of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) under in vitro conditions

Abstract

Chronic tonsillitis is a recurrent and persistent inflammation of the palatine tonsils that commonly affects children to young adults and may impact quality of life. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of outpatients with chronic tonsillitis at the ENT Clinic of Sanjiwani Regional General Hospital, Gianyar, during the 2023–2024 period. This study employed a descriptive quantitative design with a retrospective cross-sectional approach using total sampling from 51 medical records. Univariate analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel to evaluate variables including age, sex, clinical symptoms, tonsillar hypertrophy grade (Brodsky classification), and management. The majority of patients were female (58.8%) and aged ≤16 years (45.1%). The most common symptom was halitosis (39.2%), followed by dysphagia and dilated tonsillar crypts (17.6% each). The most frequent tonsillar hypertrophy grade was T2 (25–50%) at 39.2%, which was more common in females and in patients aged ≤16 years. The most frequently administered treatment was medical therapy (60.8%), particularly for mild to moderate grades, whereas surgical referral was more common in cases with more severe tonsillar enlargement. In conclusion, chronic tonsillitis in this outpatient setting predominantly affected young female patients, with halitosis and T2 tonsillar hypertrophy as the main findings. Most cases were managed conservatively, highlighting the need to strengthen clinical guidelines and patient education.

Abstract

Stunting is caused by a lack of nutritional intake for a long time so that it can cause disturbances in physical development and cognitive function that can cause death. One of the factors that influence the occurrence of stunting in toddlers is the history of low birth weight. This study aims to examine the relationship between low birth weight (LBW) and the incidence of stunting in children aged 24-60 months in the Tabanan I Health Center Working Area in 2018-2019 using analytical research methods and case control study designs and using secondary data collection methods derived from the nutrition sections. The study sample was a total of 190 toddlers recorded in the stunting and LBW report at Tabanan I Health Center, during 2018-2019 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria obtained using consecutive sampling technique. Data analysis was performed univariately and bivariately using SPSS version 25.0 with the Spearman correlation test. The results of the chi square test showed that the p value was less than the significant level (p < 0.05), it can be stated that there is an association between low birth weight and the incidence of stunting in children aged 24-60 months in the Tabanan I Health Center Working Area. The result of Levene's test is 0,184 (>0.05) which means that the variance of data between stunting and normal groups is homogeneous or the same. Conclusion toddlers who suffer from LBW have a 2,17 greater risk of experiencing stunting than toddlers who do not experience LBW.

Abstract

Early Childhood Education (ECE) plays a crucial role in child development, particularly during the critical early stages of life. Kindergarten teachers are at the forefront of monitoring and supporting early childhood development. One effective tool for the early detection of developmental problems in children is the Developmental Pre-Screening Questionnaire (Kuesioner Pra Skrining Perkembangan/KPSP). Early detection enables timely interventions, which can improve long-term developmental outcomes for children. Kindergarten teachers not only serve as educators but also as individuals who need to manage their personal lives effectively. Sound financial management is an essential skill that can help them achieve economic well-being. The partners of this community service activity were 10 kindergarten teachers from Sudha Kumara Sidakarya Kindergarten, Southern Denpasar. The main problems faced by the partners were limited knowledge regarding the importance of child developmental screening and personal financial management. To address these issues, educational sessions and training were conducted on child growth and development screening using the Developmental Pre-Screening Questionnaire (KPSP) as well as on personal financial management. Support in the form of facilities and equipment to assist in the implementation of child growth and development screening, including weight measurement tools, first aid kits, and Stimulation, Early Detection, and Early Intervention of Child Development (SDIDTK) teaching aids, was also provided to the school. The results of the community service program showed a 25% increase in partners’ knowledge, as indicated by the comparison between pre-test and post-test scores.
