Abstract

Indonesia’s position as the world’s second-largest contributor to plastic waste reflects deeply rooted patterns of unsustainable consumption. Addressing this critical issue requires innovative educational strategies to cultivate environmental responsibility and creative problem-solving in future teachers. This study examines how a guided research-based learning (GRBL) model can transform the perceptions of prospective primary school teachers regarding plastic waste management—shifting from conventional 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) actions to designing environmentally friendly bioplastics. Employing a one-shot case study design, the research was carried out over one semester in a science education course involving 214 fifth-semester students enrolled in a primary teacher education programme. They were divided into 54 groups. Data were collected through observation sheets, student worksheets, and creativity assessment rubrics. The findings suggest that GRBL prompted students to critically engage with sustainability issues by exploring the biodegradability of various natural materials. Most participants selected starch-based substances due to their accessibility and assumed ecological benefits. However, the resulting bioplastic products predominantly exhibited characteristics of modification and imitation rather than originality or innovation. The proportion of students proposing plastic from organic materials increased significantly from 22.2% to 66.7%, with 27.8% suggesting edible straw ideas. While these developments are promising, the ideas lacked originality and were limited to modifications and imitations. This indicates that while GRBL broadened students’ views on waste solutions, their creative outputs remain limited by insufficient scientific exploration and design experience. The study concludes that GRBL has strong potential to foster sustainability-oriented thinking in teacher education, especially when paired with deeper inquiry and iterative practice. These findings highlight the need for science teacher education to embed structured, hands-on research experiences that connect scientific knowledge with real-world environmental issues, preparing future educators to promote both creativity and ecological awareness in the classroom.

Abstract

Awareness among Indonesian society regarding plastic use and its management remains alarmingly low. This highlights an urgent need to strengthen sustainability education and responsible environmental practices. The implementation of the Plastic Pollution Management Worksheet uses a practicum-based method to foster greater sustainability awareness by integrating critical reflection and problem-solving strategies in addressing plastic pollution. This hands-on approach also encourages pro-environmental behavioural changes among learners. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of the Plastic Pollution Management Worksheet in practicum on students' sustainability awareness before and after its use. A one-group pre-test and post-test design was adopted, involving 40 university students, with a self-efficacy questionnaire used to assess five key indicators of sustainability awareness. The findings indicate that the implementation of practicum with the Plastic Pollution Management Worksheet had a moderate impact on enhancing students' sustainability awareness, with the most notable improvements observed in cognitive awareness (understanding sustainability concepts) and social engagement. Although improvements were noted across all dimensions, the development of sustainable behavioural changes requires further time and reinforcement. In conclusion, the practicum with Plastic Pollution Management Worksheet demonstrates potential as an innovative pedagogical strategy in sustainability education, though its effectiveness could be maximised by integrating it with other complementary educational approaches.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Read–Answer–Discuss–Explain–Create (RADEC) model, integrated with English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), in reducing science learning anxiety among secondary school students. The research addresses a common challenge faced by non-native English speakers in science classrooms—language-induced anxiety that hinders conceptual understanding and communication. Employing a convergent mixed-methods design, the study involved 30 secondary students purposively selected from Bandung, Indonesia. Quantitative data were collected through a time-series experiment, while qualitative insights were obtained via in-depth interviews. After five months of implementing the RADEC model with EMI, students exhibited marked reductions in communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, and test anxiety. At the same time, they demonstrated enhanced conceptual mastery and confidence in English-mediated scientific communication. The findings suggest that the RADEC model with EMI provides a structured yet flexible pedagogical framework, enabling pupils to access, discuss, and present scientific content in English without fear of linguistic penalties. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of a culturally responsive pedagogical model (RADEC) with EMI to address both cognitive and affective barriers in science education. This approach offers scalable potential for EMI-based instruction in multilingual, cross-national educational contexts.

Abstract

Technology nowadays has undergone continuous innovation, and its use has grown considerably in society. One form of integration of technology into learning is through natural science learning. Studies on perception of prospective elementary school teachers on the use of technology in natural science learning is still under-research. Thus, this research aims to unravel perceptions and preparations of prospective elementary school teachers for the use of technology in natural science learning and how such perceptions and preparations can influence how natural science learning will be implemented in the future. This research used a descriptive method, and data collection was carried out via a questionnaire. The subjects of research were students of the 5th semester and higher during the odd semester of the academic year 2022/2023 of PGSD Study Program at Universitas Negeri as prospective elementary school teachers. It can be concluded that the prospective elementary school teachers have a good perception of the use of technology in natural science learning. The perceptions discussed include knowledge about technology, knowledge about learning science, experience using technology in learning, the factor of the necessity of using technology in learning science, the benefits of technology in learning science, and types of technology that are appropriate for learning science.
