Abstract

Rudat is a Sasak performing art in which religious expression, movement aesthetics, and communal solidarity converge. This study reconstructs the development of Rudat in Sakra Timur District from 1999 to 2020, explains identity construction through safeguarding practices, and interprets the philosophical values embedded in lyrics, movements, and costumes. A qualitative historical approach was employed through heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were collected through observations of rehearsals and performances in Gelanggang, Gereneng, and North Surabaya villages; semi-structured interviews with eight informants comprising senior performers, community figures, youth, and a local government representative; and the examination of documents, photographs, group notes, and lyric texts. Source and method triangulation strengthened the credibility of the findings. The results indicate that the local Rudat group can be traced to 1979, while the 1999-2020 period developed through five phases: transition, consolidation, creativity, professionalization, and early regeneration amid new challenges. Changes from rebana to kelentang, reong, and gamelan, along with improved costumes and wider performance spaces, did not eliminate core elements; instead, they enabled the community to negotiate continuity and change. Rudat identity was sustained primarily through community self-help, while school and government involvement increased but remained uneven. Religious lyrics, five foundational movements, and costumes functioned as a symbolic system affirming monotheism, civility, unity, courage, simplicity, and an Islamic-Sasak identity. The study concludes that safeguarding Rudat is an adaptive cultural process rather than an attempt to freeze tradition in a single form.

Abstract

This article examines the historical development of the Nyalamaq Dilauq tradition and the effects of social change on its continuity in Tanjung Luar, East Lombok, from 1998 to 2024. The study combines historical research with an ethnographic approach. Data were obtained through participant observation, in-depth interviews with ten purposively selected informants, documentary study, and visual documentation during fieldwork conducted from June to September 2025. The data were analyzed through heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings show that Nyalamaq Dilauq has not disappeared under modernization; instead, it has been renegotiated through changes in funding, ritual frequency, public presentation, and youth participation. The economic crisis caused a temporary interruption and encouraged a simplified substitute ritual known as Menang Salah, in which a black chicken replaced the buffalo head while the core prayer for safety was maintained. Since 2018, village-budget support has increased institutional certainty and shortened the reported interval of implementation from approximately five years to two years, but it has also shifted financial responsibility from communal contributions toward formal government planning. Tourism promotion and digital media have broadened visibility, while knowledge of Pitoto oral verses and their ecological messages has weakened among younger residents. Preservation therefore depends on a balance between ritual authority, community ownership, youth apprenticeship, environmental action, and accountable cultural tourism. The tradition survives not through rigid repetition but through selective adaptation that protects gratitude, maritime safety, solidarity, and respect for the sea as its core values.

Abstract

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in history education requires changes not only in activity design but also in classroom interaction and teachers’ capacity to adapt instruction to contextual conditions. This study analyzes interaction dynamics, teachers’ pedagogical adaptation strategies, and students’ learning experiences during PBL implementation in history classes at SMA Negeri 1 Praya Tengah, Central Lombok. A qualitative case-study design was employed. Participants comprised three history teachers and 32 eleventh-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured teacher interviews, a descriptive student questionnaire and student interviews, and analysis of instructional documents. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically with NVivo 12, while questionnaire data were used descriptively to support interpretation. Three major patterns emerged. First, classroom interaction shifted from predominantly one-way communication toward two-way and multi-directional exchanges, with teachers increasingly acting as facilitators, mediators, and providers of scaffolding. Second, teachers developed adaptations including hybrid PBL, gradual scaffolding, problem chunking, differentiated learning resources, structured group roles, and reflective adjustment in response to student heterogeneity, time constraints, and difficulties in designing authentic historical problems. Third, 28 of 32 students (87.5%) reported more active involvement, while 24 students (75%) perceived that PBL helped them understand and analyze historical events more deeply; nevertheless, approximately one quarter still experienced difficulties with abstract or complex problems. These findings suggest that PBL in history education is better understood as an adaptive pedagogical practice whose quality is associated with interaction management, scaffolding, problem design, and differentiation rather than as a uniform instructional procedure
