Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) menemukan perbedaan yang signifikan pada nilai membaca siswa setelah diajarkan melalui strategi get-the-gist, (2) menemukan  peningkatan  nilai membaca siswa setelah diajarkan melalui strategi get-the-gist ,dan (3) mengidentifikasi permasalahan yang siswa hadapi dalam pembelajaran keterampilan membaca makro. Data didapat dari soal-soal membaca dan kuesioner dan diolah menggunakan SPSS 16.0. Hasil menunjukan bahwa t-ration lebih besar daripada t-table (8.103 2.056). Itu berarti ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara nilai pre-test dan  post-test pada nilai pemahaman membaca siswa. Peningkatan antara pre-test dan post-test adalah 14.04. Itu berarti bahwa ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada nilai membaca siswa. Data dari kuesioner menunjukan bahwa siswa merasa bosan untuk membaca. Ini dikarenakan keterampilan membaca dalam bahasa Inggris itu sulit dan tidak menarik. Siswa masih merasa kesulitan menjawab soal-soal khususnya pertanyaan dalam aspek membaca.The objectives of the research were: (1) to find out whether there is a significant difference on students’ reading achievement after being taught through get- the- gist strategy, (2) to find out whether there is an improvement on students’ reading  achievement after being taught through get- the- gist strategy, and (3) to find out the problems the students face in learning macro skills of reading comprehension. The data were collected by means of reading tests and questionnaire, and the data were computed using SPSS 16.0. The results showed that  t-ratio was higher than t-table (8.1032.056). It means that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The increase between pre-test and post-test was 14.04. It means there was a significant improvement of the students’ reading achievement.The questionnaire-based data showed that students felt bored to read. It was due to reading in English was difficult and not interesting. They still faced difficulties answering the questions especially in reading aspects.Keywords: get-the-gist, reading, reading achievement.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tipe kesalahan yang dibuat oleh siswa dalam teks deskriptif berdasarkan surface strategy taxonomy dan menemukan tipe kesalahan yang paling sering dibuat oleh siswa. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPA 1 yang berjumlah 32 siswa. Tugas menulis digunakan sebagai instrumen penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa membuat empat jenis kesalahan berdasarkan surface strategy taxonomy yaitu penambahan, penghilangan, kesalahan bentuk dan kesalahan susunan. Selain itu, kesalahan bentuk adalah tipe kesalahan yang paling sering dibuat oleh siswa. Hal ini menandakan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif dalam istilah surface strategy taxonomy butuh ditingkatkan.The aim of this study is to explore the types of errors the students committed in their writing descriptive texts based on surface strategy taxonomy and types of errors most frequently committed by students. This research was qualitative research. The subjects of this research were 32 students of eleven science class. The writing task was administrated as the instrument of the research. The result showed that the students committed four types of surface strategy taxonomy: addition, omission, misformation, and misordering. Misformation was the type of errors the students most frequently committed. This suggests that the students ability in writing descriptive texts in terms of surface strategy taxonomy needs to be improved.Keywords: error analysis, descriptive text, surface strategy taxonomy.

Abstract

This research was aimed to investigate whether there was statistically significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement on narrative texts after the implementation of the picture series technique. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Pringsewu in the academic year of 2019/2020. The subjects were 33 students of the first grade. The data were collected by using narrative reading tests. The result of pre-test and post-test were compared using SPSS 20 to see the significance level. It showed that the significance level was less than 0.05. The results indicated that there was a statistically significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement after the implementation of picture series technique. In addition, identifying main idea was the highest aspect that the students significantly improved. Therefore, this suggest that the technique facilitates students to improve their reading comprehension achievement.

Abstract

Masalah penelitian ini difokuskan pada kualitas butir soal yang digunakan dalam ujian semester. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah kualitas butir soal bahasa Inggris sudah memenuhi kriteria soal yang baik atau tidak, terkait dengan validitas, reliabilitas, daya pembeda, tingkat kesukaran, dan kualitas pilihan. Hasil menunjukan bahwa butir soal tersebut memiliki validitas yang baik sesuai dengan silabus, reliabiltas yang rendah (r=0.07), berdasarkan daya pembeda diketahui terdapat 10 soal yang jelek, 24 soal yang cukup, 12 soal yang baik, 3 soal yang negative, 1 soal yang sangat baik, dan berdasarkan tingkat kesukarannya diketahui terdapat 17 soal yang mudah, 16 soal yang sukar, dan 17 soal yang sedang.The problem of the reseach was focused on the quality of test items used in semester exams. The objectives of the reseach were intended to determine the quality of of English semester test items whether or not fulfilled the following criteria of a good test: validity, reliability, discrimination power, level of difficulty, and the quality of options. The results of analysis proved that good validity because the material available in syllabus, low reliability (r=0.07), according to discrimination power were determined that 10 poor items, 24 satisfactory items, 12 good items, 3 negative items, 1 excellent item, and according to level of difficulty were determined that 17 easy items, 16 difficult items, and 17 average items. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan perbedaan kemampuan membaca siswa setelah diajar dengan teknik buzz group dan herringbone Subjek penelitian ini adalah 37 siswa di SMA Utama 2 Bandar Lampung. Hasil uji statistik menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan kemampuan membaca siswa yang diajar dengan teknik buzz group dan herringbone dengan tingkat signifikan 0.0000.05. Tetapi teknik buzz group lebih baik dari pada herringbone dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa. Berdasarkan hal ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik buzz group adalah teknik yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa.This study was intended to find out whether there was a statistically significant difference of the students reading comprehension achievement after being taught through buzz group technique and herringbone technique. The subjects were 37 students of SMA Utama 2 Bandar Lampung. The result showed that there was a statistically significant difference of students reading comprehension achievement between buzz group technique and herringbone technique with the significant level 0.0000.05. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi keefektifan teknik scaffolding terhadap kemampuan menulis eksposisi analitis siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimental.Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua sekolah menengah atas dengan jumlah peserta adalah 35 siswa. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk memperoleh data. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakanRepeated Measure t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa scaffolding secara signifikan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa dengan tingkat signifikansi 0.05. Hal ini menandakan bahwa teknik scaffolding dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa.Kata Kunci: teknik scaffolding, eksposisi analitik, kemampuan menulis. This paper reports the study investigating the effectiveness of scaffolding technique on the students’ analytical writing achievement. This study is quantitative research with the experimental design. The subjects of this research were the second-grade students of senior high school with 35 students in total.The writing test was used as the instrument to elicit the data. The data were analyzed by using Repeated Measure t-test.The results showed that scaffolding significantly improved the students’ writing achievement with the significant level 0.05. This suggests that scaffolding technique facilitates the students to improve their ability in writing.Keywords: scaffolding technique, analytical exposition, writing achievement.

Abstract

Penelitian ini  bertujuan untuk mengkaji i) apakah ada peningkatan pemahaman membaca siswa yang signifikan dalam teks naratif setelah penerapan teknik mengajar reciprocal, dan ii) bagaimana respon siswa terhadap penggunaan teknik reciprocal. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa tingkat pertama SMAN 1 Way Pengubuan. One group pretest and posttest design adalah desain yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Tes kemampuan membaca dan kuesioner adalah instrumen untuk pengambilan data. Data dianalisis menggunakan Paired Sample t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan pencapaian kemampuan membaca siswa yang secara statistik signifikan dengan tingkat signifikan (0.000.05). Dapat disarankan bahwa pengajaran membaca menggunakan teknik mengajar reciprocal mempermudah siswa meningkatkan kemampuan membaca mereka. The objectives of the research were to find out i) whether there was a statistically significant improvement of the students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts after the students were taught through reciprocal teaching technique, and ii) how the students’ responses of the reciprocal teaching technique. Abstract

This research was conducted to find out: (1) some problems that might arise during teaching the recognition of cohesive ties to the second year students, (2) those that might arise while students work on texts in groups to recognize the existing cohesive ties, and (3) the students’ opinions and feelings toward teaching the recognition of cohesive ties. The data were taken from one class only of the second year students of SMA Muhammadyah Gisting. Since the focus of this research was on the process of students’ learning and their problems as well as their opinions and feelings toward the material, the researcher employed the descriptively qualitative research design. She came into class as an observer. As instruments in collecting the data, the writer used questionnaires, observation and tests. Questionnaires, before and after the implementation of teaching the recognition of cohesive ties, and the students’ reading texts after the tests were collected in order to make the data more comprehensive. Observation was conducted while the teacher taught cohesive ties to students. After analyzing the result of the research, some conclusions are drawn based on the first questionnaire, that most students did not know what cohesive ties were. Therefore, they could not understand English texts well. After being taught the cohesive ties, the students began to understand texts though not so comprehension. Concerning with the students’ opinions and feelings, the writer found that they were impressed at teaching the recognition of cohesive ties and they stated that, if possible, the cohesive ties could be taught longer at schools so that the cohesive ties might help them to understand the idea, conveyed in reading materials completely. Based on the result of this research, the writer suggests that cohesive ties would better be taught at schools, if possible, in order to make high schools students able to understand the idea in English reading texts well.Keywords: identification cohesive ties, narrative text, reading.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the significant difference of students’ writing achievement after using Instagram and to investigate the students’ perception of using Instagram in writing. The research was conducted among the second-grade students of SMA Negeri 14 Bandar Lampung in 2020/2021 academic year. The data were collected by using writing test and questionnaire. The data were collected by using writing tests (pre-test and post-test in the forms of analytical exposition text) and a close-ended questionnaire. The data taken from the test were analyzed by using a Paired Sample T-test and the data collected by using the questionnaire were descriptively analyzed. The result showed that there is a significant difference of students’ writing achievement after the implementation of Instagram. It was also found that students’ perception of the implementation of Instagram was positive.Keywords: Instagram, writing, perception.DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.23960/UJET.v10.i1.202109

Abstract

Abstract:The objective of this research is to find out whether there is anysignificant difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement betweenthe students who are taught through NHT technique and those through PRtechnique. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Seputih Raman, LampungTengah. Two classes were taken as the sample of the research; class XI IPA 4 andclass XI IPS 4. Pretest-posttest control group design was applied in this research.The result in both experimental classes showed that there was a significantincrease of students’ reading comprehension achievement after they were taughtthrough NHT technique and PR technique (p0.05; p= .000). The data analysisshowed that the mean score in the experimental class increased from 61.48 into73.81. Meanwhile, the mean score in the control class increased from 58.50 into66.92. It can be concluded that NHT technique is more effective to help thestudents improve their reading ability than PR technique is. Thus, it suggests thatthe English teacher should apply a technique especially NHT technique inteaching reading comprehension as one of alternative techniques.Keywords: Reading comprehension achievement, Numbered Heads Together(NHT) technique, Predictive Reading (PR) technique.
