Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to analyze difficulties encountered by students of the English Education study program at Tadulako University in reading comprehension of literary works. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design applied in this research. The samples were 98 students chosen randomly. Data were collected from existing documents, that is the results of pretest administered in the Reading for Literary Appreciation class. Results of data analysis showed that the students’ reading comprehension of the three genres of literary works – prose, poetry, and drama is low with percentage intervals of comprehension 18-37%. Eight difficulties encountered by the students in reading comprehension of literary works. They were vocabulary mastery, making inferences, recognizing the author’s opinion/bias, summarizing and paraphrasing, identifying figurative language, analyzing poetic or sound devices, evaluating author’s style, and analyzing the story elements. The findings provide information on students’ difficulties in reading comprehension of a variety of literary texts (prose, poetry and drama), which previous research have not yet investigated it. Therefore, teachers can design and apply strategies to help students improve their reading comprehension. Future researchers, furthermore, can find these findings resourceful to support their studies.   Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Literary Works, Reading for Literary Appreciation

Abstract

In pronunciation, students encounter significant challenges when it comes to stress. The majority of students often struggle with the accurate placement of stress in words. This research project seeks to identify the key aspects: the specific word categories that pose the most significant difficulty for students regarding stress placement, the syllable position where students commonly struggle with pronunciation, and the predominant types of errors made when attempting to pronounce stress in English. This research takes a quantitative descriptive approach to gather information about these three aspects. The study's target population consists of 250 students from Tadulako University, with a sample of 35 students chosen through purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out through tests and mobile phones as research instruments, and the data were subsequently analyzed using basic statistical methods within the Excel application. The findings reveal that verbs are the most challenging for students to pronounce among various word categories, with 53 errors observed. Regarding syllable position, the ultimate position is the most difficult for students regarding placing stress on pronunciation, with 20 errors recorded. In line with the linguistic category, the error was identified in verb (48%), noun (25 %), and adjective (27%) errors produced by students.

Abstract

The ability to speak English is very important, but it will not be successful without being supported by the ability to listen to understand the verbal language. The poor listening skills of the English Education students at Tadulako University in the final exam of the Listening for General Communication course became the basis for conducting this study. The results of the test showed that around 80% students failed the course with percentage intervals of comprehension levels of 0-39%. Therefore, this study is carried out to specify if using Cognitive-Strategy Based Method and Metacognitive-Strategy Based Method is effective in improving the participants’ listening comprehension as well as to compare the effectiveness of the two strategies. This study applied experimental design involving 80 samples evenly distributed in two classes. One class was instructed using Cognitive strategy, while the other one was taught using Metacognitive strategy. Results of data analysis demonstrated that both the Cognitive and Metacognitive strategies effectively improve the participants’ listening comprehension. There is no significant difference in terms of the effectiveness of both strategies in improving listening skills of the participants. In practice, they support each other resulting in learners better listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to determine if the implementation of the Experience Text Relationship (ETR) method can improve the reading comprehension of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. The sample for this study consisted of the grade eight students Slamet Riyadi as the control group and grade eight students Pattimura as the experimental group, selected using cluster random sampling. The researcher used pencil and paper with a test method as the instrument for data collection in the pretest and posttest techniques. Based on the test results, the average pretest score in the control group was 64.1, while in the experimental group, it was 49.7. After treatment in the experimental group, there was an increase above the control group, as evidenced by an increase in the posttest. The posttest score in the control group was 77.13, while in the experimental group, it was 80.2. Furthermore, the researcher calculated the t-counted to be 5.625, applying a significance level of 0.05 with degrees of freedom (df) 58, and the t-table value was 1.684. This means that the t-value is greater than the t-table value, leading to the conclusion that the Experience Text Relationship method can improve students' reading comprehension more effectively.
