Abstract

This research investigates the dominant noun phrase patterns used by EFL students and identifies the challenges they face in constructing complex noun phrases. A descriptive quantitative design was applied, involving third-semester EFL students majoring in English Education at Tadulako University. Data were collected through tests and questionnaires, validated using the SPSS program to ensure reliability. Results reveal that the most frequently used noun phrase pattern is determiner + noun, accounting for 35% of the total noun phrases produced by students. In contrast, the least utilized pattern is premodifier + noun + postmodifier, representing only 1%. The analysis indicates that sociocultural factors, particularly students' linguistic environments, significantly influence their ability to construct complex noun phrases. Addressing these challenges may involve implementing inclusive curricula and culturally responsive teaching strategies. The findings have implications for curriculum design, emphasizing the need to enhance instructional materials and provide targeted practice to improve students' mastery of complex noun phrase structures.AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji pola frasa nomina yang dominan digunakan oleh mahasiswa EFL dan mengidentifikasi tantangan yang mereka hadapi dalam membentuk frasa nomina kompleks. Abstract

Reading comprehension is a crucial skill for students, yet many face challenges due to limited vocabulary and ineffective reading strategies. This study investigates the effectiveness of the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy in enhancing reading comprehension among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Sigi. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the research involved an experimental group receiving QAR-based instruction and a control group following conventional methods. Data were gathered through pre-tests and post-tests and analyzed using SPSS version 22. The results revealed that the experimental group achieved a significantly higher post-test mean score (69.57) compared to the control group (58.83), with an independent sample t-test value of 0.018 (p < 0.05). These findings confirm that the QAR strategy effectively improves reading comprehension by assisting students in categorizing and responding to questions more accurately. The strategy not only enhances comprehension but also fosters critical thinking and increases student engagement during reading activities. Consequently, teachers are encouraged to incorporate the QAR strategy into their reading instruction to promote deeper understanding and improve academic outcomes. By integrating QAR, educators can support students in developing more effective reading strategies, ultimately leading to improved literacy skills and learning success.

Abstract

As English becomes the lingua franca of professional communication, many higher education institutions still overlook the importance of equipping EFL learners with targeted speaking skills for real-world occupational settings. This study responds to that pressing educational need by exploring the effectiveness of structured speaking worksheets in enhancing students' speaking proficiency and overall engagement in a professional communication course. Conducted through a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, the research involved 60 undergraduate English Education students at Tadulako University who were divided into an experimental group using speaking worksheets and a control group receiving conventional instruction. Students' speaking performance was evaluated across five critical dimensions: grammar, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and contextual appropriateness. Engagement levels were measured using structured questionnaires. The results revealed a clear improvement in the speaking abilities of students who used the worksheets, accompanied by stronger motivation, enhanced self-confidence, and increased critical thinking. These gains, when compared to the outcomes of the control group, indicate the pedagogical value of incorporating structured, context-driven speaking materials into classroom instruction. Rather than functioning as simple practice tools, speaking worksheets emerged as dynamic resources that promoted learner agency, active participation, and deeper communicative competence. This study advances English for Professional Purposes by providing empirical support for using responsive, scenario-based materials in EFL instruction. It highlights the value of task-based, learner-centered approaches that connect academic learning with future workplace communication.
