Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the long-term impact of stunting in childhood on cognitive development and educational attainment through a meta-analysis approach. Stunting, which is indicated by stunted linear growth due to chronic malnutrition, has long been associated with various negative consequences on health and social aspects. By systematically examining the results of quantitative studies from various countries and socio-economic contexts, this study identified a consistent pattern of association between stunting in early life and decline in cognitive function and academic achievement in adolescence and adulthood. Data were obtained from 25 studies that met the inclusion criteria published in the 2015 to 2024 range, and were analyzed using fixed-effect and randomized effects models with the help of the JASP application. The results of the meta-analysis showed that children who experienced stunting had an effect on cognitive and education with a pooled effect size value (Hedges' g = 1.10 t= 9.103; p < 0.001) with a high effect size category. These findings confirm that stunting not only has an impact on short-term physical conditions, but also has significant consequences for human resource development in the long term. Therefore, comprehensive nutrition and education interventions in early life are essential to break the chain of loss due to stunting.

Abstract

Posyandu is a village level of health service that plays a role in improving public health, especially maternal and child health. The existence of posyandu makes an easier access for the community to  basic health services without having to travel long distances. However, the implementation of posyandu still faces various challenges, especially in how low the level of community participation is. Community empowerment with “SIGAP (Sosialisasi Gerakan Aktif Posyandu)” and “Play Corner” programs aims to increase infant and toddler visits to Posyandu Mayang Wangi through cadre empowerment and community education. The methods used include problem awareness through Focus Group Discussion (FGD), socialization planning and implementation, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test. This socialization was carried out by posyandu cadres and public health faculty students as facilitators. The socialization provided information on the importance of visiting the posyandu and nutritional problems in toddlers, as well as a "play corner" to attract children. The enthusiasm of the participants in the discussion session and evaluation through pre-test and post-test showed an improvement in knowledge of the participants, which reflected the effectiveness of the socialization presented by the cadres. The provision of a "play corner" also improved the skills and creativity of cadres in creating educational game media from used goods. This activity succeeded in building community awareness and concern for the importance of posyandu, as well as successfully empowering cadres in raising community awareness of maternal and child health.

Abstract

Background: According to the Basic Health Research Survey (Riskesdas), the prevalence of depression in the population aged 15–24 years is 6.2%. Adolescents are prone to a variety of risky behaviors, such as drug abuse, unsafe sexual behaviors, and unhealthy diets. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze risky behaviors related to mental health determinants in high school students. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in North Balikpapan, Samboja, and Sepaku Districts, which serve as buffer zones of the National Capital, particularly at SMAN 9 Balikpapan (n=248), SMAN 2 Samboja (n=110), and SMAN 3 Penajam Paser Utara (n=28), during October–November 2024. The dependent variables measured were health risk behaviors, and the independent variables were determinants of mental health. A multivariate analysis was performed using a binary logistic regression test. Results: Family mental health status was found to increase the likelihood of smoking behavior by 2.282 times (p=0.005). Meanwhile, psychological pressure on students increased the likelihood of excessive time spent staring at a gadget screen by 2.126 times (p=0.018). Additionally, family mental health status had a protective effect against low physical activity in students (p=0.010, OR=0.198). Conclusion: Psychological distress and family mental health significantly influence adolescent risk behaviors. Further research is needed to explore the physiological aspects of stress and the impact of family mental health on risky behaviors in adolescents.

Abstract

Health students are aware of how smoking affects people's health. They are typically well-equipped to help smokers quit and play a significant role in tobacco control. The purpose of this study was to determine the role that students have in encouraging their families to quit smoking both before and after studying in health faculty, as well as the impact that health students' attitudes and tobacco control education have on these inquiries. In March and April of 2024, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using the GHPSS questionnaire, with 123 student in Universitas Mulawarman, grade 2nd public health faculty. The findings showed that there was a difference in the family’s behavior when it came to encouraging them to quit smoking (p-value 0.0350.05) and tobacco-related education (p-value 0.219>0.05) of their family members in encouraging them to quit smoking. The lack of correlation between these factors suggests that tobacco control-related attitudes and education in educational settings have very little impact on the practice of encouraging families to stop smoking. It is suggested that health student should continue to be given skills training to help smoking cessation.

Abstract

Background : Based on the 2024 Clean and Healthy Living Behaviour (PHBS) Household Survey conducted in the working area of UPTD Puskesmas Lempake, the indicator of “not smoking inside the home” showed an achievement rate of 77.6%, which remains below the national target of 85%. This finding indicates that many household members are still not fully aware of the health risks associated with exposure to cigarette smoke, particularly for children and pregnant women [2]. Smoking indoors increases the risk of respiratory illnesses and other non-communicable diseases, such as asthma, heart disease, and lung cancer. Objective : This study aims to describe smoking behaviour among households, identify factors contributing to indoor smoking practices, and emphasize the importance of health promotion interventions to support smoke-free homes Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This study was a descriptive study design using secondary data from 264 household heads who participated in the 2024 PHBS survey Results : The analysis revealed that while most households understood the dangers of smoking, indoor smoking still occurred, particularly during leisure activities and family gatherings. The persistence of social smoking norms and low awareness of the risks of secondhand smoke, especially for children and pregnant women, were identified as contributing factors. These findings suggest that indoor smoking remains a challenge in realizing clean and healthy living behaviours within the community. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Strengthened health education, empowerment of community health workers, and cross-sectoral collaboration are needed to encourage behavioural change and family commitment toward smoke-free households, ultimately creating a healthier living environment.

Abstract

Background : Female sex workers (FSWs) and seafarers are high-risk groups for HIV transmission, especially in isolated coastal regions such as Muara Berau, East Kalimantan. Complex interactions between economic dependency, limited health service access, and gender inequality contribute to inconsistent condom use and high-risk sexual behavior. Although global studies have examined these dynamics, Indonesian maritime and port contexts remain understudied Objective : To summarize, analyze, and interpret research findings related to perceptions and preventive behaviors against HIV transmission among FSWs and seafarers, emphasizing condom negotiation, structural barriers, and contextual risk factors in coastal communities Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : A narrative review was conducted using 32 scientific articles published from 2010 to 2025, retrieved from national and international journals. The literature was analyzed thematically using theoretical frameworks including the Health Belief Model (HBM), Social Ecological Model (SEM), and Theory of Gender and Power to identify determinants of condom use, behavioral change, and prevention barriers Results : Findings reveal that HIV prevention among FSWs and seafarers is influenced by economic pressures, client dominance, social stigma, and limited access to health services. Knowledge and perceived benefits of condom use are often high, but behavioral consistency remains low. Structural barriers—mobility, gender power imbalance, and lack of outreach—exacerbate risk exposure. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Effective HIV prevention in coastal Indonesia requires multilevel interventions addressing socio-economic, behavioral, and structural determinants. Empowering FSWs’ negotiation capacity, enhancing seafarers’ awareness, and strengthening outreach-based health programs are essential to close the knowledge–practice gap

Abstract

Background : Adolescents are vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) due to limited knowledge, permissive sexual attitudes, and lack of access to reproductive health information. Literature from community-based research shows that adolescents’ awareness and understanding of reproductive health remain low, increasing their risk of STDs. Health education is an important effort to improve knowledge and prevent STD transmission among adolescents. Objective : This literature review aims to determine the effect of health education on adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes toward sexually transmitted diseases through various school-based media, including leaflets, booklets, lectures, and videos. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : The reviewed studies used pre-experimental (one group pretest-posttest) and quasi-experimental designs with control groups. Participants were high school students or adolescents, and questionnaires were distributed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using statistical tests such as Paired t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results : Findings show a significant improvement in adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes after receiving health education through interactive lectures and visual media such as leaflets or booklets. The use of simple, engaging language and interactive methods proved effective in increasing understanding of STD prevention and awareness of risky sexual behaviors. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Health education effectively enhances adolescents knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Combining visual media with interactive lectures yields better outcomes than written materials alone
