Abstract

The government has established smoke-free policies, but despite the issuance of various regulations, the implementation of smoke-free areas in the field still faces serious challenges, one of which is low public compliance. Factors that influence compliance include personal factors and environmental factors. Objective : The purpose of this study is to conduct a literature review of studies that investigate the influence of personal factors and environmental factors on compliance with no-smoking areas in public facilities. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : The research method used in this study is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses). Search from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Research Gate, using the keywords "kepatuhan" (compliance), "smoke free area", and "kawasan tanpa rokok" (smoke-free zone) Results : Articles published from 2017 to 2025. From the 225 articles identified, 10 articles were selected for use after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : personal factors (knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, perception) and environmental factors (quality of smoking facilities, no smoking signs) influence compliance with the implementation of smoke-free areas in public facilities. These two factors are integrated and interact reciprocally (reciprocal determinism).

Abstract

Background : The age at which an individual first starts smoking plays a critical role in shaping risk behaviors associated with substance abuse. Adolescents who begin smoking at an early age are more likely to experiment with alcohol, cannabis, or synthetic drugs. Understanding the relationship between early smoking initiation and the tendency toward drug use is essential for designing effective prevention and rehabilitation strategies Objective : This study aims to review empirical evidence on the association between smoking initiation age and patterns of drug use among adolescents and rehabilitation clients in Samarinda, serving as a foundation for evidence-based prevention strategies. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : The review analyzed 21 reputable scientific articles (Scopus Q1–Q3 and SINTA), selected based on their relevance to early smoking age, substance abuse behavior, and adolescent or rehabilitation contexts. A thematic analysis was conducted across six key areas: smoking initiation age, psychosocial factors, smoking behavior patterns, transition to drug use, media and environmental influences, and health knowledge. Results : The findings indicate that smoking before the age of 15 significantly increases the likelihood of later drug abuse. Supporting factors include peer pressure, psychological stress, and permissive environments that normalize smoking and substance use behavior Conclusion/Lesson Learned : These results highlight the urgency of implementing early preventive interventions through health education, school-based programs, and social environment supervision to reduce drug abuse rates among adolescents and support rehabilitation efforts.

Abstract

Thirdhand smoke (THS) is tobacco residue left on surfaces and dust after cigarette smoke disappears, which can increase health risks, especially for children. Understanding the factors that influence THS prevention behavior is essential for the development of effective public health interventions. This study aimed to identify and synthesize various factors that influence THS exposure prevention behavior through a SLR. Articles were systematically searched on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus for publications from 2021 to 2025, referring to the 2020 PRISMA guidelines and strict into inclusion-exclusion criteria. Of the 280 articles identified, 12 studies (total 5,241 participants) were included, the majority of which were cross-sectional in design and predominantly from Turkey. The main factors influencing THS prevention behavior included: awareness and knowledge (10 studies), belief about the dangers of THS (8 studies), education (6 studies), income (5 studies), smoking rules at home (5 studies), and smoking behavior (4 studies). Awareness of the term THS was still low (8.7%). Higher education (OR=18.835; p<0.001) and home ownership (OR=2.667; p=0.004) significantly influenced beliefs about the dangers of THS. Information about nicotine levels on children's hands increased parents' concerns and intentions to improve. In conclusion, awareness, knowledge, belief in the dangers of THS, and sociodemographic factors are the main determinants of THS prevention behavior. Public health interventions need to target THS education at low-income and low-education groups. Further research is needed in diverse contexts.

Abstract

Background : The use of polluted river water for household purposes is still frequently found in various regions of Indonesia. Objective : This narrative review aims to explore community perceptions regarding the meaning of health and sickness in relation to the practice of using river wate Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : The literature review indicates that communities develop unique perceptions of water quality based on sensory indicators (color, smell) and direct experience, rather than microbiological parameters. Results : The concept of 'sickness' tends to be defined functionally as a condition that disrupts daily activities, while mild illnesses like diarrhea and skin rashes are often normalized. Socio-cultural, economic factors, and limited knowledge shape these perceptions and create a cycle of dependency on river water. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : It is concluded that there is a gap between scientific health definitions and community perceptions, therefore public health interventions need to consider participatory approaches that understand the construction of health-sickness meanings at the community level.

Abstract

Premarital sexual behavior has become a significant social issue among adolescents in Indonesia, particularly concerning the high rates of child marriage and unintended pregnancies. Despite efforts to promote Marriage Maturity to reduce these rates, its effectiveness requires further investigation, especially in the context of adolescent motivation to avoid risky sexual behavior. This study aims to explore adolescent motivation to avoid premarital sexual behavior by applying the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), which involves threat appraisal and coping appraisal in adolescent decision-making to delay early marriage. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Informant consisted of adolescents aged 15-19 years in Samarinda City who had received information about marriage maturity. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with six purposively selected Informant using intensity sampling techniques. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation and documentation. Collected data were analyzed using QSR NVIVO 12 Pro. The findings reveal that adolescents’ understanding of marriage maturityis still limited, and the threat of premarital sexual behavior is perceived as low by most Informant. Factors such as perceptions of severity adolescents are quite good because they have seen firsthand the impacts of premarital sex. For response efficacy and self-efficacy in delaying the age of marriage, these are relatively high among adolescents exposed to PUP. This is because they have parental and peer support providing information related to PUP. Additionally, social environment, media exposure, and education levels shape adolescents' responses to marriage maturityas a protective measure.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: In accordance with Samarinda Mayor Regulation No. 51 of 2012, the Faculty of Public Health at Universitas Mulawarman (Unmul) has enforced a Smoke-Free Area (KTR) policy since 2016. However, this implementation remains largely restricted to health-related faculties, leaving other areas of the university without consistent tobacco control measures. The lack of continuous health promotion initiatives has contributed to persistent smoking habits among students across the wider campus. This study aims to compare the perceptions of students from health and non-health faculties regarding tobacco control and evaluate their views on the current implementation of the KTR policy. Methods: This research employed a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design. Data was collected online between March and April 2024 using the Global Health Professional Student Survey (GHPSS). Utilizing purposive sampling, the study gathered 215 respondents, consisting of 123 health students and 92 non-health students. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The results reveal a statistically significant difference in perceptions regarding tobacco regulation (P-value = 0.0001). Students in non-health fields tended to have a negative attitude toward tobacco control (65.7%), whereas health students demonstrated a positive perspective (67.6%). Furthermore, there was a significant difference in perceived KTR implementation (P-value = 0.000); only 22% of health students reported observing smoking on campus, compared to 83.7% of non-health students. Notably, among non-health students, those with positive attitudes toward tobacco control showed strong support for the KTR policy (87.3%), with 15.2% favoring strict sanctions for policy violations. Conclusion: The findings underscore the urgent need to expand the KTR policy to all faculties at Universitas Mulawarman. It is critical to develop targeted advocacy and educational programs that address the specific needs of the entire academic community to ensure effective and comprehensive smoke-free campus implementation.
