Abstract

Jorinda & Jorindel is one of the horror tales rewritten by Brother Grimms. Jorinda & Jorindel as the protagonists in this story faced a catastrophe caused by supra-natural terror and kidnapping committed by The Evil Witch. In realizing such narration, language plays a significant role to depict the characters’ feelings or emotional state that gives the text mood. Such language is technically perceived as the affect. It is one of the attitude domains under the theory of appraisal. By applying appraisal framework (J. R. Martin & Rose, 2003) as the development of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, this descriptive qualitative study attempts to describe affect prosody in the tale of Jorinda and Jorindel. The study found that in the orientation the story is full with the good vibe linguistically represented by positive effect felt by the protagonist. It then changes radically into negative affect (antipathy, unhappiness, and insecurity) as well as the antagonist (antipathy), It then begins to return to equilibrium represented by the positive affect in the evaluation (happiness and security). It continues in the resolution where the positive affect (happiness) fulfills the protagonists’ hearts but not with the antagonists’. It is because her evil life has been over. The findings imply that the affect resonates from the positive to negative and returns to positive

Abstract

This research examines the two factors which effect on the raising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. It aimed at delineating the potential effect of these two factors on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference of undergraduate students majoring in English department of State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung and PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. 213 Javanese undergraduate students were selected based on two-step purposive sampling. To collect data, the researcher used observation and questionares in which the participants answered a set of 12 open-ended questions to measure the students’ term along with educational institution and Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. To analyze the data, t-test on correlation and coefficient as well as linier stepwise multiple regressions were conducted through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Data analysis indicated that the independent variables significantly correlated with Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. In addition, multiple regressions analysis specified different higher institution as the main contributing variable and students’ term as the second one on the arising of Indonesian interference. It also showed that students of English departments of state Islamic institution of Tulungagung got higher scores on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference than those of PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. The reason may refer to the supporting environment that is higher language exposure. The results highlighted the longer the students’ term they have, the lower score on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference they produce.

Abstract

This research investigated the form and types of circumstances,  translation techniques, translation quality of circumstances, and the impact of translation techniques towards the form, types and translation quality of circumstances in bilingual kids story book. This qualitative research used systemic functional linguistic approach. The data obtained was analyzed using analysis technique of Spradley. The results show that circumstances were expressed in the form of words, group of words, and prepositional phrases, having 7 types: circumstances of location, circumstances of manner, circumstances of extent, circumstances of causes, circumstances of accompaniment, circumstances of role, and circumstances of matter. The translation techniques include: single variant, couplet, triplet and quartet. Children stories vary in types and forms of circumstances, depending on the focus and plot of the stories. The translation techniques lead to either cause translation shift or translation qualities of the circumstances are of good quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability and high readability.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how language is used to portray Lintang as a resilient and gritty character in the novel Laskar Pelangi, through the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and drawing on Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal theory. The specific objective of this research is to explore how linguistic choices in the novel construct the character of Lintang in terms of his resilience and grit, focusing on the aspects of judgment, particularly tenacity, capacity, and normality. The method used in this study involves a qualitative analysis of textual evidence from the novel. Linguistic elements related to judgment are identified, categorized, and analyzed based on their contribution to portraying Lintang’s resilience and grit. The findings of this study reveal that Lintang's character is constructed through a combination of linguistic elements that emphasize his extraordinary tenacity, strong capacity, and relatable normality. Despite being frequently underestimated due to his simple physical appearance, these linguistic choices underscore his resilience and grit. Lintang’s ability to overcome societal prejudices and physical limitations highlights the message that true success comes from inner strength and persistence. By illustrating Lintang's journey, Hirata effectively conveys that physical appearance does not define one's potential for greatness. This research contributes to the understanding of how literary characters can inspire resilience and grit in readers, providing valuable insights into storytelling methods that emphasize character development through language.

Abstract

Abstract: In the last ten years, studies of the representation of moral values in English textbooks have been growing. However, little empirical evidence reveals the use of speech acts to represent moral values through utterances. This study aims to investigate the representation of moral values depicted through utterances in English textbooks for elementary school grades 2 and 5 in Indonesia. By adopting a socio-cognitive critical discourse analysis (Van Dijk, 2015) framework integrated with Searle’s (1969) speech acts, this qualitative study elucidates the representation of moral values only in the verbal text. The data were analyzed by applying several steps, including unitizing, sampling, recording/coding, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The findings of this study showed that curiosity, honesty, and friendliness are the most dominant moral values depicted in two English textbooks for elementary schools in Indonesia.  Dialogue/conversation, chapter cover, and instruction for students’ activity are the strategies to promote moral values in the textbooks. This study implies that teachers and textbook writers should provide students with more examples of moral values, particularly those related to daily life communication.

Abstract

Studies of the representation of moral values in English textbooks in Indonesia have developed in recent years. However, there is still little research that reveals the use of speech acts to represent moral values through sayings presented in elementary school students' textbooks. This research investigates the representation of moral values depicted through sayings in international English textbooks for elementary schools in classes 2 and 6 in Indonesia. By adopting Searle's (1969) speech act theory, this qualitative research explains that the representation of moral values is only found in oral texts. The data were analyzed by applying several steps from Krippendoff (2004). The findings of this research indicate that responsibility and kindness are the dominant moral values depicted in two English language textbooks for elementary schools in Indonesia. This research implies that teachers and textbook writers should provide students with more examples of moral values, especially those related to daily life communication both at school and in the family.

Abstract

This article discusses the attitudinal lexis representing feelings to support the process of characterization in narrative texts written by senior high school students in Plupuh, Sragen. Six best stories were selected from twenty texts produced by the students to be analyzed for their text structure and for the way the writers exploit the emotive words representing feelings to support the process of characterization for the participants in the stories. The results show that all of the writers have good skills in arranging discourse units to be a narrative text. All of the texts are structured with the obligatory discourse units for a narrative such as Orientiation, Complication, and Resolution. Furthermore, they are also good in selecting the emotive words representing feelings in the forms of Quality and Process. However, they did not have the words in the form of Comment in their stories. The language units representing feelings are distributed along the units of the narrtive texts to support the discourse functions of each unit. Overall, the exploitation of the emotive words can help the writers in the process of characterization of the participants of the stories they produced.
