Abstract

Eglish is an international language widely used in education, work, and intercultural communication. Speaking fluency is a crucial component of speaking skills because it enables learners to convey ideas smoothly and spontaneously. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of using the HelloTalk application in improving students’ English speaking fluency. A quasi-experimental design was employed involving two classes: an experimental group taught using HelloTalk and a control group taught using conventional methods. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test speaking assessments and analyzed using an independent sample t-test. The findings revealed that the mean post-test score of the experimental group (68.5) was higher than that of the control group (62.25), with t-count (5.85) exceeding t-table (2.002), indicating a significant difference. These results suggest that HelloTalk is effective as a learning medium for improving students’ English speaking fluency through interactive and authentic communication.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a crucial element of English learning because it enables students to communicate effectively in various contexts. However, many junior high school students still have limited vocabulary knowledge and low learning motivation, which creates a gap between expected learning outcomes and actual classroom practice. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of using cartoon movies to improve the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 12 Palu. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-randomized control group using pre-test and post-test. The participants consisted of 30 students who were divided into experimental and control groups. Vocabulary tests were administered as the research instrument and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, and the Mann-Whitney U Test. The results indicated that students taught using cartoon movies showed a significant improvement compared to those taught using conventional methods. Thus, cartoon movies enhance vocabulary.

Abstract

This research investigates the use of video media to improve the ability of tenth-grade students at SMK Negeri 5 Palu in writing procedure texts. Many students still face challenges in generating ideas, organizing steps, and applying correct vocabulary and grammar. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of video-based instruction in enhancing students’ writing performance. A quasi-experimental design was applied, using pre-test and post-test assessments for both experimental and control groups. Writing ability was measured based on content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. The findings reveal a significant improvement in the experimental group after the treatment, with the mean score increasing from 5.06 to 11.24. A paired sample t-test showed Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000, indicating a statistically significant difference. These results confirm that the use of video media is effective in improving students’ procedural text writing ability.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perspectives on self-assessment in English Language Teaching (ELT), focusing on its implementation and challenges at Tadulako University. The research employed a qualitative descriptive design supported by quantitative data to gain insights into students’ experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five students and a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire administered to thirty students of the English Education Study Program who had experience using self-assessment in English courses. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes related to students’ understanding and challenges of self-assessment. The findings indicate that students perceive self-assessment as a reflective learning process that helps them monitor progress, identify strengths and weaknesses, and take responsibility for learning. Self-assessment enhanced motivation, confidence, learner autonomy, and English language skills. However, challenges such as limited objectivity, unclear assessment criteria, and insufficient lecturer feedback were identified. These findings suggest self-assessment requires guidelines, rubrics, and lecturer support.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of the impact of digital literacy on reading comprehension among English Education students at Tadulako University. A descriptive, qualitative approach was employed, involving the distribution of questionnaires to students in the 2023 cohort and in-depth interviews with selected participants. The findings reveal that students generally perceive digital literacy as having a positive influence on their reading comprehension. Digital tools such as online dictionaries, translation applications, and diverse online reading materials help students understand texts more easily and increase their motivation to read. However, challenges such as internet connectivity issues, distractions, eye strain, and difficulties in evaluating reliable sources were also reported. Overall, digital literacy is viewed as a supporting factor that enhances reading comprehension when accompanied by critical thinking skills and proper guidance. The study highlights the importance of integrating digital literacy instruction into reading courses to optimize students’ comprehension in digital learning environments.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using films as a learning medium to improve English vocabulary mastery in seventh-grade junior high school students. The methodology used is quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design involving two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The sample size consisted of 64 students, divided equally into 32 students in the experimental group who were taught using films, and 32 students in the control group who were taught using conventional methods. The type of film used in the learning intervention was a short animated film that was story-oriented and had easy-to-understand dialogue, chosen for its relevance to the age and potential to attract students' interest. The main statistical analysis, specifically through an independent t-test, showed a statistically significant difference between the post-test scores of the two groups. These results indicate that the intervention using films resulted in a substantially higher increase in vocabulary mastery. Quantitatively, the experimental group showed an average increase (gain score) of 25% compared to the control group, which only showed an increase of 10%. This was proven by calculations using the SPSS 24 software system . Thus, the main conclusion of this study is that the use of films is an effective and efficient learning medium for improving English vocabulary mastery in seventh-grade junior high school students.

Abstract

This study analyzed the use of derivational suffixes that transform root nouns into adjectives in the writing of EFL students at Tadulako University. This study aims to identify the types of adjectival suffixes that are difficult to use and the common errors students make. Using quantitative descriptive method, data were collected from the students' writings and analyzed morphologically. The results show that suffixes such as -ful, -ous, -ly, -al, -ic, -able, -less, and -ive are frequently used. However, many errors were found, especially in choosing the wrong suffixes and in spelling. These findings highlight the need for more explicit instruction in morphological rules to help the students form words more accurately.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Lembo regarding the use of animated movies in teaching English speaking skills. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design using questionnaires and interviews as data collection methods. The participants were ten seventh-grade students. Results show that students held positive perceptions of using animated movies in speaking lessons. They reported improved motivation, confidence, and comprehension in learning English through visual and contextual media. The study concludes that animated movies can serve as an engaging and effective medium for improving students’ speaking competence.

Abstract

This study explores English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ attitudes toward British, American, and Indonesian English accents at Tadulako University, as well as the internal and external factors influencing their preferences. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, this research involved five undergraduate students from the English Education Study Program, with three selected for in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data were collected through informal observation, interviews, and field notes, and analyzed using thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s framework. The findings reveal that students prioritize clarity and intelligibility as the most important characteristics of a good English accent, particularly in academic communication. While British and American accents are perceived as more fluent, prestigious, and associated with higher language proficiency, Indonesian English accent is valued for its familiarity and role in representing cultural identity. Additionally, students’ attitudes are shaped by social expectations, peer perceptions, and exposure to media, which often create pressure to adopt native-like accents. Despite this, participants generally recognize that effective communication does not require imitation of native speakers. This study highlights the complexity of students’ attitudes, which balance admiration for native accents with acceptance of local identity. It supports the perspective of English as an International Language (EIL), emphasizing intelligibility over native-like pronunciation. The findings suggest the importance of fostering inclusive language teaching practices that promote confidence, respect accent diversity, and prioritize communicative effectiveness in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Comprehending explicitly stated information in reading passages remains a persistent challenge for many junior high school students, often hindering their ability to understand texts at the literal level, which forms the foundation for higher-order comprehension skills. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether the visualization strategy significantly improves literal reading comprehension among EFL students. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 20 Palu using a quasi-experimental design. The population consisted of 105 eighth-grade students from classes VIII A, VIII B, VIII C, and VIII D, with class VIII C assigned as the experimental group and class VIII B as the control group through random sampling. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to collect data. The findings revealed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean score (78) than the control group (63) in the post-test, and the statistical analysis showed a significance value of p < 0.05, indicating that the visualization strategy effectively enhanced students’ reading comprehension, particularly in understanding literal information in descriptive texts. These findings suggest that visualization strategies can be integrated into EFL instruction to improve students’ engagement, comprehension, and overall learning experience.
