Abstract

This research purposes to improve student’s speaking and writing skills for the Twelfth Grade students of SMK Telkom Sandhy Putra Banjarbaru by using Fishbowl Technique. The number of subjects were 13 students who had been taught English Speaking and Writing based on the curriculum in academic year 2015/2016. The research was carried out by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) implemented by the English teacher is the researcher itself. The action was implemented into two cycles. The data were collected from the scores of pre-test, cycle one and cycle two. The result of observations and questionnaire were also calculated to give additional informations. The implementation uses Fishbowl Technique focused on : (1) the benefit of using Fishbowl as the way of technique (2) to improve the ability of the students in speaking and writing skills. A setting room is used to support implementation of modeling in this research. The results showed that students’ speaking and writing skills by using Fishbowl technique could improve the students’ ability in speaking and writing. The significant improvement of students’ achievement in speaking and writing could be seen from the increasing average score for speaking achievement from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2 that was from 67,84 to 78,00 and for writing achievement that was 70,30 to 80,61.

Abstract

Di tengah pesatnya arus globalisasi dan kemudahan akses informasi, budaya lokal menjadi kurang mendapat perhatian dan porsi di berbagai media massa. Beberapa hal yang berpotensi menyebabkan hal ini adalah kurangnya minat maupun kemampuan individu dalam menulis artikel yang memuat informasi tentang budaya lokal, khususnya di Kota Kasongan, Kab. Katingan, Prov. Kalimantan Tengah. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan penulisan konten lokal pada guru-guru di kota tersebut selaku salah satu agen dalam penyebaran informasi di masyarakat. Kegiatan yang berupa pelatihan ini akan membekali guru-guru dengan materi-materi tentang penulisan konten lokal yang nantinya dapat dipublikasikan di media massa maupun dipergunakan dalam proses pembelajaran. Dengan meningkatnya kemampuan menulis, diharapkan kualitas dan kuantitas artikel yang memuat informasi tentang budaya lokal setempat semakin meningkat. Sehingga, pada akhirnya akan meningkatkan eksistensi budaya lokal di tengah era modernisasi ini.

Abstract

This study explored the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English teaching at SMP Sahabat Alam Palangka Raya, focusing on how concept character was integrated, the challenges faced by teachers, and the strategies used to overcome them. The curriculum emphasized student-centered learning, differentiated instruction, and contextual integration. Teachers used methods such as project-based learning, essential material focus, and flexible classroom practices to meet students’ diverse needs. However, the implementation process presented several challenges. These included varied student proficiency levels, limited access to teaching materials, difficulty integrating local content, lack of professional development, time constraints, and low student motivation. To investigate this process, a qualitative case study design was employed, involving classroom observations, in-depth interviews with English teachers, and analysis of teaching documents and student work samples. Findings revealed that teachers adopted various pedagogical approaches aligned with the curriculum, including project-based learning, flexible classroom practices, and an emphasis on essential material tailored to students’ diverse needs. However, several implementation challenges emerged, such as varying student proficiency levels, limited access to appropriate teaching materials, difficulty in integrating local cultural content, insufficient professional development opportunities, time constraints, and low student motivation.

Abstract

This study was focused on the challenges in implementing eclectic method faced by English instructors at one of the non-formal educations in Palangka Raya, namely Global Learning Center (GLC). The English instructors used eclectic methods to maximize the teaching and learning process in order to achieve the learning goals. The implementation of eclectic method is still new and there is no research about it yet in Palangka Raya. This study intended to investigate the challenges of implementing it in non-formal education. To obtain the objective, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design. The descriptive used to provide rich descriptive details of the challenges in implementing eclectic method. The data were collected through interview and documentation. The result data analysis was found four challenges when implementing the eclectic method, they were (1) managing the time, (2) students’ gap and diversity, (3) designing appropriate lesson plan using eclectic method, and (4) motivating the students to speak. Hopefully, this research can give an insight for teachers and other English course to know the challenges before implementing the eclectic method. They need to be well-prepared in combining several methods in each learning process with considering the allocation time, variation of student backgrounds, and the strategy to motivate the students. For the other researcher, this research is still widely open for those who want to investigate and examine deeply about eclectic method. Keywords: challenges, eclectic method, speaking

Abstract

The study was conducted to know the effect of pre-questioning technique and Instagram on reading comprehension of narrative text of legend. True experimental in randomized-groups-posttest-only control group design was applied to the tenth grade students of SMAN 3 Palangka Raya in academic year 2017/2018 chosen as the sample of the study. Reading test in form of multiplechoice was used as the main instrument in order to collect the data needed. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using Mann-Whitney U Test. The result of this study shows that the use of pre-questioning technique and Instagram gave a significant effect on reading comprehension of narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMAN 3 Palangka Raya in Academic Year 2017/2018.

Abstract

Junior high school students like those in the eighth grade of SMPN 10 Muara Teweh still have difficulty in writing narrative text. This is because they are still weak in terms of writing and channeling ideas to be poured in narrative texts. The purpose of the study is to know whether or not there is a significant difference of the use of grammar wheel and mind mapping in students' ability to write narrative text as the media. The method was an experimental method with design of One-Shot Case Study design; the independent variable was grammar wheel and mind mapping, and the students' writing narrative text as the dependent variable. The population and sample were taken from the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Muara Teweh. The data were analysed using SPSS 16.0 for Windows program. The result shows that there was a significant difference of the use of grammar wheel and mind mapping as media and without them. The use of Grammar Wheel media affected more significant than that of Mind Mapping in the students’ writing ability in narrative text.

Abstract

This research was aimed to identify the implementation of the motivational strategies in the classroom performed by two English lecturers of IAIN Palangka Raya and to describe the learners? motivated behaviors in the classroom as the response to the motivational strategies based on Dornyei (2001). This research was a case study in descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of the research were two English lecturers of IAIN Palangka Raya and their learners. The researcher as the main instrument of the research used observation, interview, and documentation to collect the data. The research findings showed some points as follows: First, two English lecturers of IAIN Palangka Raya applied four aspects of motivational strategies. They were creating the basic motivational conditions, generating initial motivation, maintaining and protecting motivation, and then encouraging positive retrospective self-evaluation. The lecturers applied the same motivational strategies in various ways. They applied 29 strategies of 35 motivational strategies by Dornyei (2001). Second, the learners? motivated behaviors at each lecturer?s classroom were different in the aspect of participation. At lecturer A class, the learners? motivated behaviors appeared in the learning process were that they had high attention, high participation, and eager volunteering to lecturer-fronted activity. While at lecturer B class, the learners had high attention, low participation, and eager volunteering to lecturer-fronted activity.

Abstract

The research was conducted using qualitative research method with one English teacher of SMPN 16 Palangka Raya as the subject of the study, and the objectives are to analyse (1) the teacher’s use of spoken English in her instruction referring to the Lesson Plan, (2) the structure used by the teacher, (3) the vocabulary used by the teacher. The data were obtained from class observation and interview with the teacher. The result of data analysis and the discussion of the findings show several matters related to the teacher’s spoken language in English class of SMPN 16 Palangka Raya as follows : (1) The teacher’s use of English Instruction was appropriate with the Lesson Plan, which included orientation, apperception, motivation, and giving references; (2) the teacher used English spoken language at first and then followed by Indonesian due to the students’ weakness in English; (3) the teacher used simple vocabulary, which all of them were used to make the condition of the classroom alive and give relaxing atmosphere that the teacher’s utterances could be easily understood by the students.

Abstract

This research aim to describe the Content Appropriateness English Textbook For Tenth Grade Students of Senior High School by Private Publisher (Intan Pariwara) in the aspect content appropriateness. This research was descriptive qualitative with content analysis. The textbook was evaluated by using Krippendorf’s content analysis: unitizing, sampling, coding, reducing data, inferring contextual phenomena, and narrating the result. The instrument in the research was the researcher herself through reading the textbook repeatedly and thoroughly. This is also done under the instrument issued by Board of National Education Standard. The result of the research shows as follow: The completeness of materials in this textbook almost met completely according to KI and KD for tenth grade students of senior high school (90,9%). The materials in this textbook provided 10 materials in the three kind of texts both of functional text, interpersonal text and transactional text but 1 material left or not be fulfilled. The depth of materials was mostly grouped into depth category for the exposure in functional text (90%), inaccurate texts (18,7%), the materials in the textbook was up to date, but none of the texts or activities in the textbooks support vocational skills (0%).

Abstract

This Collaborative Classroom Action Research was conducted to know the use of “Hello English” (HE) application to improve the students’ pronunciation ability in speaking. The subject and setting of the research were Speaking 2 students of English Education Study Program, University of Palangka Raya. The data were collected in form qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained from the result of questionnaire on the use of HE application, and the quantitative data were taken from the test results to know the students’ pronunciation ability in speaking. The result shows that the mean score of PreAction Test of 52.3 was lower than the minimum mean score 70. The data of cycle 1 show that the students’ mean score was higher than minimum mean score (92.0) but there were some students who still had “fair” interest, activities, and ability when using HE application, which means one of the criteria of success was not passed and need some improvement in cycle 2. The results in cycle 2 show that the students’ mean score was higher than minimum mean score (94.3) and all the students had “good” and “excellent” interest, activities and ability when using HE application. It can be concluded that “Hello English” application can improve the students’ pronunciation ability by practicing it several times.
