Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of social criticism found in the novel Si Putih by Tere Liye by examining their relation to the author’s background, the social realities of society, and readers’ responses. This research is grounded in the theory of literary sociology, which emphasizes that literary works reflect social realities creatively expressed through the author’s experiences and imagination. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a sociological approach to literature. Data were collected through an intensive reading of the novel, analysis of the author’s social background, and interpretation of the social meanings embedded in the narrative. The findings reveal that Si Putih contains various forms of social criticism, including critiques of social inequality, humanity, and moral disparity in society. These criticisms are conveyed through the depiction of character conflicts, settings, and dialogues that hold reflective meaning. The novelty of this research lies in its comprehensive analysis that connects the intrinsic elements of the novel with the author’s social dimension and readers’ perspectives, thereby reinforcing the understanding that literature is not merely an aesthetic product but also a medium of social communication that fosters awareness and critical sensitivity toward societal realities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the forms and functions of comparative figurative language used in Boy Candra’s novel Kisah yang Pilu untuk Kita yang Ragu (A Sorrowful Story for Our Doubt). The focus of this research is to reveal how comparative figurative language strengthens emotional expression, enhances linguistic beauty, and builds aesthetic meaning in modern literary works. This study employs a qualitative approach using content analysis combined with a phenomenological perspective. Data were collected through intensive reading and note-taking of quotations containing comparative figurative language within the novel’s text. The results show that there are seven types of comparative figurative language found in the novel, namely simile, metaphor, personification, antithesis, tautology, and anticipation, with a total of 19 data instances. The most dominant types are simile, metaphor, and personification, which are used to depict the characters’ emotional states and to create poetic beauty in the narrative. Meanwhile, figures such as antithesis, tautology, and anticipation serve to reinforce meaning and provide stylistic variation in the author’s expression. The novelty of this research lies in combining stylistic analysis with a phenomenological approach to uncover the emotional and psychological meanings behind the use of comparative figurative language in contemporary Indonesian popular fiction.

Abstract

Speech act is a linguistic action used by someone to convey a message. The first and most influential environment in a social learning process is the family environment, especially parents through interpersonal communication. Our research aims to identify and analyze the forms of directive speech acts commonly used by children towards parents in the context of family communication in Lampung language in Kesugihan Baru Village, Liwa, West Lampung. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods through observation and interviews. In this study, we found four types of directive speech acts used by children: requests, orders, prohibitions, and advice. These utterances appear in various everyday situations and are influenced by emotional closeness and the context of interaction. The results of the study show that children are able to use language pragmatically to express their desires and influence their parents' actions effectively. This phenomenon is interesting to study, especially since there is still very little research on how children use Lampung regional language to influence their parents' actions from a pragmatic perspective.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and types of spelling and punctuation errors found in the academic papers of students in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program at the University of Lampung. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with documentation as the data collection method. The data consisted of spelling and punctuation errors identified in 20 first-semester students’ papers during the 2024/2025 academic year. The findings revealed 125 errors, consisting of errors in the use of capital letters (30.4%), prepositions “di” and “ke” (21.6%), compound word writing (9.6%), commas (23.2%), and periods and quotation marks (15.2%). The most frequent errors were in the use of capital letters and commas. These mistakes occurred mainly due to students’ lack of understanding of the Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia (PUEBI), the influence of informal writing habits, and limited experience in editing academic texts. The results of this study are expected to serve as evaluation material for improving students’ academic writing skills, particularly in mastering the correct use of spelling and punctuation in higher education contexts.

Abstract

The development of the digital era has accelerated the dissemination of cultural information, including oral traditions, which are an important heritage of the Lampung people. One distinctive oral tradition that has received attention is memmang, a form of spell steeped in magical and spiritual values. This study aims to describe the existence of the memmang tradition in Lampung society, uncover its function and meaning, and preserve its preservation amidst the dynamics of modernization and globalization. The research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and document analysis, including traditional manuscripts as the primary source. The results show that memmang plays a central role in the social life and beliefs of the Lampung people, but is facing a decline in function due to changes in social values, religious influences, and minimal regeneration from the younger generation. Nevertheless, this tradition is still preserved to a limited extent by several communities through oral inheritance and written documentation. This study emphasizes the importance of documentation efforts, cultural education, and the use of digital technology so that the memmang oral tradition can continue to live and be relevant in the modern era.

Abstract

Globalization has contributed to a decline in children's familiarity with local languages and cultures. This situation calls for educational strategies that preserve local heritage while fostering early multilingual skills. This study explores the meaning and implementation of the Sarigabah (One Day, Three Languages) program at SDN 1 Mangkujayan as a cultural preservation and multilingual education effort. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving three teachers and six students. The findings show that Sarigabah integrates the use of Indonesian, Javanese, and English within a single school day according to a set schedule. The inclusion of Reog Ponorogo traditional attire enhances cultural values. Abstract

The result of a writer's creativity in expressing their imagination, ideas, and feelings to describe the reality of life around them is often referred to as literature. One form of literature that is concise yet rich in meaning is the short story. This study aims to describe the form and function of social deictics used by Asma Nadia in her short story Rembulan di Mata Ibu (The Moon in Mother's Eyes). The approach used is descriptive qualitative with the steps of reading the text in depth, recording relevant data, analyzing the linguistic context, and interpreting the social meaning of the characters' speech. The results show that there are six types of social deictics covering the aspects of gender, age, education, profession, greetings, and nicknames. Each form shows differences in social status and relationships between participants in society. These findings confirm that the use of social deictics not only functions as linguistic markers but also as a reflection of the social and cultural values that exist in society. The uniqueness of this study lies in its in-depth analysis of social relationships in Asma Nadia's short stories, which were examined from a stylistic and pragmatic perspective.
