Abstract

Abstract

Background: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), has often been viewed along the lines of technocratic compliance in the case of Bula, East Seram, an area of historical neglect and layered cultural diversity region. Technocratic Compliance sees CSR as little more than a box-ticking exercise, whereby the opportunity for real social community empowerment is lost. Purpose: The objective of this study is to propose an alternative pathway for CSR, which would involve the reframing of a socially bottomed phenomenon, ethnically and culturally integrated, from a prescriptive imposition  to an ethical, cross communicative practice of co-creation. Methods: The research poses a qualitative case study design. Data were integrated from the exercise of participant observation, document reviews, and semi-structured interviews with 15 informants, including representatives of the corporation, community leaders, and civil servants. This methodology enables the capturing of CSR phenomena from several perspectives. Results: Findings point to the generalized gap existing corporately centralized systems and community demands to be engaged in processes of collaboration and partnership. Interventions implemented in the absence of cultural dialogue are, at best, likely to interact with bureaucratic functions and survive as indifference. In contrast, initiatives designed and implemented in partnership demonstrated prevalence to social support and sustainable change. Conclusion: The study states that the legitimacy of CSR is not a function of positive legal prescription, but rather an outcome of meaningful, sustained dialogues across cultures. Implications: This research improves the understanding of CSR as a type of “social diplomacy.” It suggests that companies should treat philanthropic acts as more than a transaction, creating and sustaining culturally adaptive communications that respect local knowledge and promote a more just and more balanced industry-society relationship.

Abstract

Situ Cisanti is one of the hundreds of ecotourism objects in Indonesia. The local Government's ecotourism development continues to intensify by involving the surrounding community in Tarumajaya Village. This study focuses on the role of the community around Situ Cisanti in the development of ecotourism to improve the local economy. Using qualitative methods and interviewing some participants, the results of this study found that the community around Situ Cisanti has actively participated in ecotourism development activities. This is evidenced by the high level of community enthusiasm when participating in community role optimization activities organized by the Government and local managers. In addition, in terms of the economic aspect, the community around Situ Cisanti shows an increase. This is demonstrated by the concrete actions of the community who have become economic actors around the Situ Cisanti ecotourism object. The community takes advantage of the existence of tourism in the form of stalls, culinary, coffee, souvenirs and homestays owned by local communities. The most use of ecotourism is in the form of recruitment of casual daily employees, construction workers, shop businesses, coffee businesses, culinary businesses, souvenir businesses, parking businesses and motorcycle taxis. This research contributes mainly to researchers and policy makers about the integration of community participation management in the development of ecotourism in various locations in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of disaster education and social media usage on disaster preparedness in coastal communities, focusing on Masawah Village in the Cimerak District, Pangandaran Regency. The research was conducted using a quantitative survey method with data collected from a sample of 100 respondents selected through probability sampling with a cluster sampling approach. Data were analysed using Partial Least Squares (PLS) with SmartPLS 3.0 software. The findings reveal that both disaster education and social media usage significantly influence individual intentions and actual disaster preparedness. Additionally, the mediating role of intention is identified, highlighting its importance in linking disaster education and social media usage to preparedness. These results suggest that disaster education should incorporate practical training and community participation, while social media campaigns should leverage popular platforms like WhatsApp and TikTok to engage wider audiences effectively. This study contributes to the literature by integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to explore the mediating effects of intention in disaster preparedness. It offers practical implications for policymakers and disaster management organisations to enhance community readiness. The originality of this research lies in its focus on a coastal community and its use of TPB as a theoretical framework, addressing gaps in previous studies that have not thoroughly investigated the role of social media in disaster preparedness.

Abstract

Governments in developing countries view ecotourism as a strategy to enhance local income and improve community livelihoods. However, the dominance of mass tourism systems often constrains the potential benefits of ecotourism for local communities. This study aims to examine the forms and dynamics of community participation in ecotourism development at Situ Cisanti, Tarumajaya Village, Kertasari Subdistrict, Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The research employs a qualitative case study approach informed by critical theory. Data collection include field observations, in-depth interviews with local community members, tourism stakeholders, and government officials, as well as document analysis. The findings identify four main forms of community participation: environmental protection, local entrepreneurship, cultural preservation, and ecotourism marketing. Social media functions as a participatory platform that facilitates information dissemination, stakeholder collaboration, and community empowerment through the Community Information Group (Kelompok Informasi Masyarakat/KIM). Nevertheless, participation remains largely tokenistic, as community members tend to follow externally driven agendas without possessing significant decision-making authority. This study highlights that social media has the potential to enhance local contributions to ecotourism development when integrated with inclusive government policies and community capacity-building initiatives.

Abstract

The Ngalaksa traditional ceremony is a significant cultural practice in Rancakalong, Sumedang, West Java, serving as a vital medium for preserving intangible cultural heritage. While prior studies have explored the broader significance of such ceremonies, limited research has examined the specific roles and challenges faced by traditional elders in safeguarding these traditions amid modernization and globalization. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the multifaceted roles of traditional elders in the Rancakalong Tourism Village in preserving the intangible cultural heritage embodied within the Ngalaksa traditional ceremony. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings highlight the critical roles of traditional elders as ceremonial leaders, guardians of cultural values, and, most importantly, key knowledge transmitters who bridge the past and present, ensuring the authentic transmission of traditions to younger generations. This study reveals that the elders’ efforts extend beyond ceremonial continuity; they also serve as a form of resistance against the homogenizing forces of modernization, playing a crucial role in maintaining cultural identity and local wisdom. The study concludes that supporting and empowering traditional elders is essential not only for preserving the Ngalaksa traditional ceremony but also for ensuring the continuity of cultural heritage amid evolving socio-cultural landscapes. These findings have implications for policy development aimed at strengthening community-based cultural preservation initiatives and promoting sustainable tourism practices that respect and value indigenous knowledge systems.
