Abstract

The productivity of existing rice varieties has plateaued, while the area of rice fields continues to decline and the population continues to grow. Efforts to develop higher-yielding rice varieties have been made, one of which is the development of the multi-canopy rice system. This study aimed to assess the agronomic performance of tall and short rice genotypes in a multi-canopy (MC) system across two planting seasons. This study evaluated 22 MC combinations and two monoculture checks (‘Inpari 32’ and ‘Ciherang’) using a randomized complete block design with 3 replications, across dry and wet seasons at IPB University’s Babakan station. The results of the study showed that a significant C×S interaction was found only for the number of filled grains (NFG) trait. A better performance is generally observed in the dry season. The best performing combination was D15 (IPB200-F-60 and IPB200-F-12), which produced the highest grain yield of 7.27 tons/ha, outperforming the check varieties. Total number of tillers (TNT), number of productive tillers (NPT), and number of filled grains (NFG) were positively and significantly correlated with yield. MGIDI analysis identified multi-canopy combinations D15, D6, D20, D19, D1, D12, and D9 as potential based on six traits. These combinations should be tested across a wider range of environments to further elucidate the effect of genotype-by-environment interaction.

Abstract

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is a significant disease attacking rice crops worldwide. This disease attacks at various stages of plant growth and causes significant yield loss. Breeding new varieties resistant to BLB is important to support sustainable agriculture in the future. This study aimed to identify new superior green super rice (GSR) lines resistant to BLB disease. The experiment evaluated the resistance of lowland rice lines obtained from anther culture using a factorial randomized complete block design. The 1st factor was genotype, consisting of 20 lines, 2 checks of commercial varieties (Inpari 42 Agritan GSR and Inpari 18), a resistant check (Conde), and a susceptible check (Taichung Native 1). The 2nd factor was BLB pathotypes (i.e., III, IV, and VIII). Quantitative data on disease severity and severity index were analyzed using analysis of variance and t-Dunnett test at 5% level. The results showed that the interaction between genotype and pathotype affected the disease severity and severity index in both growth phases. The tested lines exhibited varying resistance, from susceptible to resistant, to BLB. Four lines (SN 11, 13, 57, and 58) showed moderate to resistant criteria for BLB disease of 3 pathotypes in both growth phases. The selected lines can be used as a source of parents for breeders and candidates for new superior varieties with BLB resistance properties to support the reduction of synthetic chemical bactericide inputs and control BLB disease. However, further field evaluations are necessary to assess their performance.

Abstract

Rice production is facing a decline due to climate change and land conversion. The development of high-yielding and multi-tolerant abiotic stress rice varieties (such as drought, salinity, and flooding) is needed for adaptation to a changing climate. This research aimed to identify potential doubled-haploid (DH) rice lines with good agronomic performance and high yield through index selection. The study was conducted in the rainy season of 2024, and used a randomized complete block design with a single genotype factor and three replications. The genetic material evaluated consisted of 56 DH rice lines and 5 check varieties, i.e., Inpari 18, Inpari 30, Inpari 34, Inpari 35, and Ciherang. Observation was conducted on plant height (PH), number of vegetative tillers (NVT), number of productive tillers (NPT), days to 50% flowering (DF), days to harvesting (DTH), number of filled grains (NFG), total grains per panicle (TG), panicle length (PL), and productivity. The results showed high heritability in all observed variables, indicating that the variables could be used as selection criteria. The weighted index selection involving PH, NPT, DTH, and productivity resulted in 30 DH rice lines with good agronomic traits such as medium PH, medium NPT, medium maturity, and productivity above the check varieties. Those selected DH lines can be evaluated further in more diverse environments to study the effects of genotype, environment, and G×E interactions.

Abstract

Best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) is a method designed to predict genetic values from imbalanced data. BLUP analysis that utilizes kinship information can reduce bias due to data imbalance. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and general combining ability of parents through progeny testing and validation of prediction models for untested crosses. A progeny testing was planted in 2008 in a randomized complete block design with 5 replications. Observations were made on 10 characteristics observed in 2015 - 2017. The results showed that mesocarp/fruit and kernel/fruit characteristics were more controlled by tenera parents. Based on the estimation of the general combining ability of dura parents, BJ5686D and BJ5678D can be used to produce varieties with superior characteristics of productivity and oil yield. Tenera parent, AP141T can be used to produce superior varieties with good oil-related traits. The BJ5819T and BJ5817T parents can be used to produce varieties with slow height increment and high oil-related traits. Special combining abilities were not significant for all characteristics. The results of the 2-fold cross-validation showed that the accuracy for number of bunch , fresh fruit bunches, CPO production, rachis length, core/fruit, dry oil/mesocarp, and oil/bunches was 0.52 – 0.88. This information can be utilized in subsequent breeding programs.

Abstract

Abstract. Hastini T, Suwarno WB, Ghulamahdi M, Aswidinnoor H. 2019. Short Communication: Correlation and regression among rice panicle branches traits. Biodiversitas 20: 1140-1146. Panicle was a very important organ in rice since the grains are developed from the panicle branches. This study aimed to find out the information about the relationship among rice panicle branching traits using correlation and regression analysis. The trial was conducted at the IPB Research Station, Babakan, Bogor, Indonesia from December 2015 until April 2016. Twenty genotypes of lowland rice were used as treatments with three replications and arranged in a completely randomized design. The panicle branches traits were observed. The result showed that there was positively and a highly significant relationship among the panicle branches traits in general. Analysis using linear regression revealed that, in general, the total grains number per panicle showed the linear relationships with other traits, and only total grains number per panicle vs tertiary branches number, total grains number per panicle vs grains number of tertiary panicle branch, and total grains number per panicle vs the number of secondary branches per panicle branch showed the quadratic relationship. Among all rice panicle branching traits, the secondary panicle branches number had the highest contribution to the total grains number per panicle.

Abstract

Abstract. Nugroho RB, Suwarno WB, Khumaida N, Ardie SW. 2020. Male-sterile induction method in foxtail millet (Setaria italica). Biodiversitas 21: 4325-4330. Male-sterile induction is one technique that can be used to prevent selfing in self-pollination plants, especially for plants with small floret. This study aimed to identify an effective male-sterile induction method that can kill pollen while keeping the stigma receptive in foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beauv). The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Cikabayan Experimental Station and the Biology and Biophysics Seed laboratory, Dept. of Agronomy and Horticulture, IPB University, Indonesia from October 2018 to February 2019. The experiment consisted of two sub-experiments that were carried out with a split-plot design with four replications. The male-sterile induction method was the main plot, and the genotype was the subplot. The results from the first experiment showed that alcohol, warm water, and maleic hydrazide treatments were effective for killing pollen in the upper panicle and pollination zones. These treatments were also effective in developing unproductive rachis with different effect patterns on panicles. The results from the second experiment showed that warm water treatment and maleic hydrazide could keep the stigma receptive. From both experiments, warm water treatment was recommended for male-sterile induction in foxtail millet because it was effective in killing pollen, inflicting unproductive rachis in the upper panicle and pollination zones, and kept the stigma receptive.

Abstract

Abstract. Akbar MR, Purwoko BS, Dewi IS, Suwarno WB, Sugiyanta, Anshori MF. 2021. Agronomic and yield selection of doubled haploid lines of rainfed lowland rice in advanced yield trials. Biodiversitas 22: 3006-3012. Selection process is important step to obtain high yielding variety. This study aimed to obtain information on agronomic performance of doubled haploid lines of rainfed rice in advanced yield trials and select the best lines for multi-location yield trials. Two experiments were conducted in Bogor and Subang using a randomized complete block design for each location and consisted of 35 doubled haploid lines and two check varieties namely Ciherang and Inpari 18 as a treatment. The result revealed that interaction between genotype and environment (G x E) significantly affected all agronomic characters, except on the panicle length. Characters with high heritability value were all agronomic characters except number of productive tillers and productivity. Genotypic correlation analysis showed that number of productive tillers and weight of 1000 grains had significant and positive correlation with productivity. The selection used weighted selection index based on multivariate analysis. Fourteen lines were selected for multi-location yield trials. These lines had characteristics as follows: number of productive tillers (14.0-17.7 tillers), weight of 1000 grains (24.7-32.5 g), and productivity (5.0-6.2 ton ha-1). The selected lines can be evaluated further to obtain superior lines in multi-location trials.

Abstract

Abstract. Karima AW, Putri RK, Purwoko BS, Dewi IS, Suwarno WB, Kurniawati A. 2021. Selection of doubled haploid black rice lines in advanced yield trial based on multivariate analysis. Biodiversitas 22: 5425- 5431. Research on the development of black rice has not received much attention. The anther culture technique can shorten the plant breeding process and produce doubled haploid (DH) lines. The target of this study was to evaluate DH black rice lines with early maturity, good agronomic performance, and high yields. Twenty-seven doubled haploid lines and three check varieties (Aek Sibundong, Inpari 24, and Jeliteng) were evaluated at two locations (Kediri, East Java, and Bogor, West Java) from January to July 2020. A randomized complete block design was applied to this study with three replicates. The combined analysis results showed that the genotype effect (G) was highly significant (p < 0.01) for all characters. In addition, all characters had a high broad-sense heritability. Characters that were positively correlated with yield based on genotypic and phenotypic correlation were the number of productive tillers, the number of vegetative tillers, panicle length, the number of filled grains, and the number of total grains. The 1000-grains weight and panicle length had a positive and the largest direct effect on yield. Principal component analysis showed that the number of productive tillers and the 1000-grains weight were related to yield. The selection index model that can be formulated is as follows I = (3*0.375*Yield) + (0.723* 1000-grains weight) + (0.280* Number of productive tillers). Based on the selection index, 14 genotypes were selected.

Abstract. Nurhidayah S, Purwoko BS, Dewi IS, Suwarno WB, Lubis I. 2023. Agronomic performance and selection of green super rice doubled haploid lines from anther culture. Biodiversitas 24: 819-826. Rice is the staple food of most Asian, including Indonesian people. Plant breeding plays an important role in producing high-yielding varieties of rice to meet national carbohydrate sufficiency. Green Super Rice (GSR) is an alternative for rice variety development that has the advantages of high yield, good quality, pest resistance, and efficient fertilizer use to support sustainable agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic character of GSR doubled haploid (DH) lines derived from anther culture and determine the best GSR rice lines based on index selection. The treatment was 65 genotypes consisting of 60 DH of GSR lines from anther culture of 5 combinations of crosses and 5 check varieties. The study used a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that most of the tested lines had similar agronomic performances to the check variety Inpari 42 Agritan GSR. Almost all agronomic characters of the GSR DH lines had high genetic variability. Most characters had a high category of broad-sense heritability except panicle length. Line selection using index selection for economically important agronomic characters yielded 27 GSR DH lines having high productivity, number of productive tillers per hill, number of total grains per panicle, and percentage of filled grains per panicle.
