Abstract

The funeral ritual, also known as 'pa hengingu', is one of the traditional customs of Sumba that have endured to the present day. This research examines the communication events occurring within the Marapu funeral ritual. This study aims to understand the perspectives and values held by the Marapu community by employing a qualitative approach and communication ethnography methodology. This study focuses on traditional communication in the Marapu’s funeral ritual by examining communication activities, such as communication situations, communication events, and communication actions. This study also tries to understand how a cultural group creates meaning, values, and communication practices through cultural events. Research data was collected through observations and interviews with one primary informant and three additional informants. The primary informant was the Funeral Ritual Guide, while the other three informants included the Chief of the Marapu Community, a male community member, and a female community member. The implications of this research for the Marapu community lie in the realm of documentation and archival record benefits. The research findings reveal that the Marapu community highly values kinship and community cooperation—the funeral ritual results from community cooperation involving not only grieving families but all tribal groups within the Marapu community.

Abstract

This research explores the impact of the #DemokratLawanBegal hashtag on Twitter, focusing on its role in shaping political discourse and influencing party leaders' alignment. It aims to uncover relationships among elite actors and identify influential figures within the Twitter network using this hashtag. Drawing on concepts like political communication, political elites, Twitter's importance, and Social Network Analysis (SNA), the study adopts SNA methodologies with tools like Netlytic and Gephi Apps. Data collection occurred throughout 3-10 April 2023 to maintain relevance. The findings highlight the significant impact of the #DemokratLawanBegal hashtag in shaping political discourse and the power struggle within the Democratic Party. AHY emerges as a more influential figure than Moeldoko, and Twitter, particularly through this hashtag, plays a central role in political communication and framing strategies. Social Network Analysis reveals a closely interconnected network of actors, with the official Democratic Party account (@pdemokrat) central to information dissemination. Some actors facilitate swift information sharing (closeness centrality), while others serve as key connectors (betweenness centrality). These insights deepen our understanding of contemporary political communication dynamics, offering implications for political campaigns, policy advocacy, and digital strategies.

Abstract

Men’s bodies have become a commodity in the capitalist industry to compete with women’s bodies. This is because in modern life, how you look is a way to show your freedom, personality, and confidence. There are a lot of facial treatment clinics now, and one of them has helped bring up the need for both men and women in modern society to care about how they look. Instagram was chosen for this study because it is a popular social media site. Instagram makes people compare how they look and makes them feel unhappy with their bodies, which can affect each person’s body image. The goal of this study was to find out what Bening’s Clinic’s digital marketing plan was for disciplining the metrosexual men’s body on Instagram. As a research method, the Krippendorff content analysis method was used to find out what the message was about and what it meant. The posts on Instagram by @beningsclinic_jakarta from October 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020, will be the unit of analysis. Researchers chose the Krippendorff content analysis method because they wanted to look at the content of Instagram posts in a quantitative way. The researcher then tries to figure out what the @beningsclinic_jakarta Instagram post is about, how to read the symbols, and what the interaction between the symbols means. The conclusion is that Bening’s Clinic Jakarta’s digital marketing strategy in the @beningsclinic_jakarta Instagram post includes ads that are more focused on bringing up men public figures from the entertainment world as an attraction and building fantasy for potential customers, especially metrosexual men who want to discipline their bodies through facial treatments.

Abstract

Stigma and discrimination continue to persist in the leprosy village of Sumberglagah, despite government efforts to provide social assistance and community empowerment programs. This article aims to uncover the dynamics of communication and the perceptions of village elites and community members regarding the effectiveness of various government policies targeting Sumberglagah. Utilizing elite theory and a three-dimensional framework—cognitive, affective, and conative—the study employs a mixed-methods approach. Qualitative data were gathered through interviews with five elite village informants, while quantitative data were collected from a survey of 100 respondents in Tanjungkenongo village. Findings indicate that, from the elite perspective, government programs are perceived as relatively ineffective in addressing the needs of the leprosy community, primarily due to a culture of reliance on external assistance from both government and non-government sources. In contrast, quantitative analysis reveals that the community generally expresses satisfaction with government programs, with an average satisfaction score exceeding 4. However, there is notable skepticism regarding the long-term impact of these programs, as reflected in the low community engagement with government-initiated empowerment programs. This study highlights the divergence in perceptions between elites and the community concerning government interventions, emphasizing the need for more effective and culturally attuned strategies to address the unique challenges faced by leprosy-affected communities.
